Why Are My Facebook Stories Not Uploading?

The short version: Facebook Stories fail to upload because of a slow or unstable connection, an outdated app, a video file that doesn't match Facebook's format rules, or a cache that's quietly gone wrong. Work through the fixes in order of how common the cause is rather than randomly reinstalling things, and you'll usually have it sorted in under ten minutes. If nothing works, the problem often isn't your phone at all, it's Facebook's own server load.

The usual suspects, in order of likelihood

I've spent enough years posting content on Facebook for business pages and personal brands to know that Stories uploads fail for a handful of boring, repeatable reasons. Not drama. Just plumbing.

  • Your connection is weaker than you think. Stories need a steady upload speed, not just a strong download signal. You can have full wifi bars and still have a rubbish upload because the router is being hogged by a laptop update or someone's video call.
  • The app is out of date. Facebook pushes updates constantly, and Stories upload code changes more often than the main feed code. An app that's two or three versions behind is a common cause.
  • The file itself doesn't fit Facebook's rules. Stories videos need to sit within specific length and ratio limits, and if you've edited a clip in a third-party app that exports an unusual codec, Facebook will sometimes just refuse it silently rather than give you an error.
  • Cache corruption. The app stores temporary data for everything you do, including half-finished uploads. Over weeks that cache can get clogged and start blocking new ones.
  • Facebook's servers, not you. This is the one most guides don't want to admit. Meta has outages and regional slowdowns that have nothing to do with your phone, and no amount of restarting will fix a problem sitting on their end.

A worked example

Say you run a small bakery account and you try to post a 25 second Story clip of today's sourdough coming out of the oven. You film it, it looks fine in your camera roll, but when you try to upload it to Facebook it spins for thirty seconds and then just disappears from the queue with no error message at all.

Here's what's happening in a case like that. The clip was filmed in 4K because your phone defaults to the highest quality setting, the file is 180MB, and you're on a train with patchy 4G. Facebook's app tries to upload, the connection drops for two seconds, and rather than resuming the upload like a real file transfer app would, it just silently fails and discards the attempt. You get no error because Meta's app is notoriously quiet about failures, it just acts like nothing happened.

The fix in that exact scenario: wait until you're on wifi, or manually drop the video resolution down to 1080p before uploading, because a smaller file succeeds far more reliably over a patchy connection than a large one that gets one shot at uploading in a single go.

Step by step fixes

  1. Check your actual upload speed, not just your signal bars. Run a quick speed test. If upload is under 1 Mbps, Stories will struggle.
  2. Force close the Facebook app completely, not just switch away from it, then reopen it.
  3. Clear the app's cache through your phone settings (Android: Settings > Apps > Facebook > Storage > Clear Cache; iPhone doesn't allow cache clearing per app, so offload and reinstall instead).
  4. Update the app from the App Store or Google Play. Check the version number against the current release.
  5. Shorten or re-export the clip at 1080p instead of 4K, and keep it under 20 seconds per segment.
  6. Try uploading from a different network to rule out your router or carrier.
  7. Check Facebook's own status via a quick search for outage reports if all the above fails.

Why it isn't always your fault

Most articles on this topic frame every failed upload as something you did wrong: wrong file, wrong settings, wrong app version. That's only part of the picture. Meta's infrastructure has genuine capacity issues during peak global usage hours, particularly early evening across US and UK time zones when everyone's posting at once. If your Story fails at 6pm and uploads fine at 11am the next day with zero changes on your end, that's your answer. You didn't fix anything. Facebook's load dropped.

That's an uncomfortable one for a platform that doesn't publish honest uptime figures the way, say, AWS does for its cloud services, but it's worth knowing so you stop blaming your phone for something that was never within your control.

Format and compression rules that trip people up

Facebook compresses most uploaded media, and Stories are no exception. If you've ever wondered whether this is also stripping data from your files, it's worth reading how Facebook compresses photos and whether it removes metadata from photos, because the same compression logic applies to video Stories and can cause quality drops or outright rejections if the source file is unusual. Stick to standard MP4 or MOV exports, 9:16 ratio, under 4GB, and you'll avoid most format rejections entirely.

If you post Stories for a business, build in a buffer

If Stories are part of how you market a business rather than just personal posting, don't rely on last-minute uploads at all. A scheduling tool gives you a second attempt built in rather than a last-minute scramble when the upload fails five minutes before you wanted it live. I've written a full comparison of Facebook scheduling tools for 2026 if you want to take uploading pressure off your phone entirely and queue content in advance instead.

And if your Stories strategy depends on reaching the right audience rather than just posting and hoping, it's worth understanding why Facebook suggests the friends it does, since your Story's organic reach is tied to the same relationship signals that drive friend suggestions and feed ranking.

If you're managing Facebook for a business and these small technical frustrations keep eating your time, it might be worth getting outside help rather than troubleshooting app settings every week. An AI consultant for small business can help you set up tools and workflows so content gets scheduled, checked and posted without you sitting there watching a spinning upload icon.

A quick checklist before you give up

  • Switch to wifi and try again
  • Restart the app fully, not just minimise it
  • Update to the latest app version
  • Re-export the video at 1080p, under 20 seconds
  • Check Facebook's status online
  • Try posting from a second device if you have one, to isolate whether it's your phone or your account

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Facebook Story upload fail with no error message?

Facebook's app frequently fails silently rather than showing an error, usually because of a dropped connection mid-upload or a file that doesn't meet format requirements. Check your connection and re-export the video before trying again.

Does video length affect whether a Story uploads?

Yes, shorter clips under 20 seconds upload far more reliably than longer ones, especially on patchy connections, because the whole file has to transfer in one attempt without resuming.

Can clearing the Facebook app cache fix upload problems?

On Android, clearing the cache through phone settings often resolves stuck uploads caused by corrupted temporary files. On iPhone, offloading and reinstalling the app has a similar effect since there's no separate cache clearing option.

Is it ever Facebook's fault rather than my phone?

Yes, regularly. Meta's servers experience genuine load issues at peak times, and no troubleshooting on your end will fix an upload failure caused by their infrastructure rather than your device.
