Claude suits people whose work is writing, analysis and code, and who want an assistant that thinks things through and produces documents, slides and files with them. Gemini suits people who live in Google's world, because it connects to Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Photos and YouTube and comes free with any Google Account. Both have free plans, so the deciding question is where your work already sits: in documents and code, or inside Google's apps.
Both assistants are excellent now, so feature lists alone won't settle this. What separates them is what they're built around. Claude is built around deep work on a task in front of you. Gemini is built around your Google account and the apps you already use. I read Anthropic's plans page, help centre and Claude's App Store listing, and Google's Gemini plans page, its Gemini Apps help on limits and Gemini's App Store listing.

How Gemini's usage limits work
This is the detail most comparisons skip. Google's Gemini Apps help says usage limits are compute-based: they factor in how complex your prompt is, which models and features you use, and how long your chat runs. Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. So a long research session with big files uses your allowance faster than quick questions, and heavy users will feel the weekly ceiling.
Anthropic's help centre describes Claude's Pro plan as giving more usage per session than the Free plan, plus priority access at busy times. One catch worth knowing if you build things: the Pro plan doesn't include API usage through the Claude Console, which is set up separately.
What Claude does especially well
Claude's free plan is generous: chat on web, desktop and mobile, search the web, create files and run code, memory across conversations, connections to your apps, and Artifacts, along with Claude's design, slides and docs tools. Its App Store listing leans on writing that keeps your voice, coding help across Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, and research that searches the web and compiles findings with citations. Pro adds Claude Code, Projects, more models and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365.

What Gemini does especially well
Gemini's strength is reach. The free tier includes 15 GB of storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, image generation and editing, Gems and Gemini Notebook. Its App Store listing describes Gemini Spark, a personal agent that works on tasks around the clock under your direction, a Daily Brief each morning, and Gemini Live, where you can share your screen or camera and talk things through. If your inbox and calendar are already Google, Gemini connects to them directly.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My advice on Claude or Gemini
Use both free plans for a week on your real work. Give Claude your hardest writing or thinking task, and let Gemini handle your inbox and calendar. You may well end up keeping one for deep work and the other for everyday admin, and that's a perfectly sensible place to land.
