WhatsApp email verification lets you get a login code by email instead of text or call when you log back in to your existing account. It only works if you added and verified an email first: go to Settings, then Account, then Email address, and enter the code WhatsApp emails you. Brand-new registrations still use text or a call.
Most people only think about this when they're locked out: new phone, no signal, travelling abroad, or a SIM that won't receive texts. An email on your WhatsApp account is the backup that gets you back in without the text message. It takes a minute to add, and it's worth doing before you need it.
How to add and verify your email on WhatsApp
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Tap Account, then Email address.
- Enter your email address.
- WhatsApp sends a verification code to that email. Enter it to confirm.
You can add your email at any time, not just when you first sign up. WhatsApp says it gives your account an extra layer of security and means you can recover it even without a connection for texts or calls.
When you can use an email code
| Situation | Can you verify by email? |
|---|---|
| Logging back in to an existing account that has a verified email | Yes. Choose Email under Choose how to verify |
| Re-registering your phone number | Yes, with a verified email, by following the steps WhatsApp emails you |
| Registering a brand-new number for the first time | No. Codes come by text or phone call |
| You never added an email | No. Add one now while you still have access |
That table is the whole story. Email is a recovery route for an account you already have, not a way to create one.
How to log in with an email code
- Start setting up WhatsApp on your phone with your number.
- When WhatsApp asks how you'd like to verify, choose Email under Choose how to verify.
- Tap Continue.
- Open the email from WhatsApp and enter the code, or follow its steps.
No email option? Other ways to get your code
- Tap Need help getting a code? to request a new code by text.
- Tap Call me to get the code by phone call instead.
- In most regions, if you choose a call and have voicemail switched on, WhatsApp's automated system leaves the code in a voicemail.
- If nothing arrives, contact your mobile provider to check whether texts or calls to your number are being blocked or delayed.
- Check your connection too. WhatsApp registration needs a stable internet connection, and my guide on whether WhatsApp needs Wi-Fi explains the basics.
'You have guessed the code too many times'
If you type the wrong code more than once, WhatsApp makes you wait before you can ask for another. It says there's no way to make this faster, so don't keep trying. Wait out the timer, then request a fresh code and enter it carefully. This is another reason to set up email verification: it gives you a second route if texts are slow.
Email and two-step verification
Two-step verification is WhatsApp's optional extra security: a password or PIN you're asked for as well as the code. When you set it up, WhatsApp offers to add an email address too, and that email can then be used to verify you. If you're turning on two-step verification, add your email at the same step. It's your safety net if you forget the password.
Example: a lost phone abroad
Imagine your phone is stolen on holiday. You get a spare handset and a local SIM, but your own SIM is gone, so texts to your number won't reach you. Without an email on your account, you're stuck until you can get a replacement SIM for your number. With a verified email, you can choose Email when WhatsApp asks how to verify, pick up the code on any device where you can open your inbox, and get back into your chats.
You'd still need your phone number to be the one you registered with, because WhatsApp accounts are tied to a number. But the email removes the dependence on receiving a text at that moment, which is usually the part that fails.
Which email should you use?
- One you'll still have in five years, not a work address you could lose when you change jobs.
- One that's secure itself, with its own strong password and two-factor login.
- One you can open on a different device from your phone, in case your phone is the thing you've lost.
If someone gets into that email, they're one step closer to your WhatsApp, so protect it accordingly.

Stay safe: never share the code
WhatsApp codes, whether by text, call or email, are only ever for you. A common scam is a message from a 'friend' or 'support team' asking you to forward a code you've just received. Doing so can hand over your account. If you think a friend's account has been taken over, call them on a normal phone line to check before you reply to anything. If anyone asks, refuse, and warn the friend whose account may already have been taken. My guide to whether WhatsApp Plus is safe covers another way accounts get compromised.
My verdict
Add a verified email to WhatsApp today. It's free insurance for the day your phone or SIM lets you down, and it only works if you set it up in advance. Use a personal email you'll keep, protect that email well, and remember that new registrations still need a text or a call.

How do I add an email to WhatsApp?
Go to Settings, then Account, then Email address, enter your email and type in the code WhatsApp sends you.
Can I verify WhatsApp with email instead of SMS?
Yes, when logging back in to an existing account that has a verified email. Choose Email under Choose how to verify.
