Is TeamViewer Free? Only for Personal Use, and Here's the Line

Yes, TeamViewer is free, but only for personal use. TeamViewer says personal use means helping family and friends or connecting to your own devices that aren't used for work. Anything connected to your job, even checking work email from home, counts as commercial use and needs a licence.

This is why so many people see a commercial use detected message and get cut off. TeamViewer watches how it's used, and its definition of commercial is wider than most people expect. Here's where TeamViewer draws the line, what happens when it flags you, and how to ask for a reset if it's wrong.

Personal vs commercial use at a glance

How you use itTeamViewer's view
Helping a parent fix their laptopPersonal
Connecting to your own home computerPersonal, if it isn't used for work
Checking work email on your office PC from homeCommercial
Supporting customers or colleaguesCommercial
Monitoring a device running a server operating systemCommercial
Working for a nonprofit that gives you a salaryCan be commercial

TeamViewer also says it doesn't matter whether you registered your account with a personal or company email address. What counts is how you use it.

The catch: home office counts as commercial

This is the line most people cross without knowing. TeamViewer's knowledge base says that if you use it for home office, that's commercial use, even if you only connect to your work computer to check your emails quickly. It also covers incoming and outgoing connections, so being connected to by someone for work counts too.

Nonprofits aren't automatically exempt either. TeamViewer says use can be commercial if you, or anyone else in the organisation, gets a salary from it.

What happens when you're flagged

When TeamViewer suspects commercial use on a device without a licence, sessions can be cut short with a connection timeout. TeamViewer also says connections to devices flagged as commercial aren't possible, even if your own device has been reset to personal use. So the device you're connecting to may need its own reset.

Uninstalling doesn't help. TeamViewer says the suspicion can only be removed from your TeamViewer ID by asking for a reset and getting a positive reply.

How to ask TeamViewer for a reset

  1. Go to TeamViewer's reset page and click the start button.
  2. Enter your name, your TeamViewer account email and a short note on how you use it.
  3. Add every TeamViewer ID involved: your own and each device you connect to. You can add up to 10 IDs per form.
  4. Send the request once. TeamViewer asks you not to contact it several times for the same ID.
  5. TeamViewer says it reviews requests within 72 hours and replies by email.

There are two outcomes. If TeamViewer confirms private use, it resets your ID. If it still suspects commercial use, it gives you the option to fill in a declaration of private use.

Is TeamViewer stopping its free version?

No. TeamViewer answers this directly in its FAQ: personal use of TeamViewer is free. It says asking commercial users to get a licence is how it keeps an up-to-date free version for everyone else.

What counts as personal use

TeamViewer's definition adds one detail to the table above: your own devices only count as personal if they aren't servers and aren't used in a commercial setting. A quick check before you connect helps: if the session has anything to do with your job, a client or your organisation, treat it as commercial.

TeamViewer also says the free version is meant for that personal group, and it doesn't want people helping family and friends to need a licence.

Connection timeouts aren't a bug

If you keep getting a connection timeout, TeamViewer says that alert is linked to suspected commercial use too. The fix is the same reset form, with every affected ID listed. TeamViewer also says both accounts and individual TeamViewer IDs can be flagged, so include the email address you use for your account when you apply.

Quick check: personal or commercial?

  1. Is the device you're connecting to used for work? If yes, it's commercial.
  2. Are you helping a customer, client or colleague? If yes, it's commercial.
  3. Is the device a server? If yes, it's commercial.
  4. Do you or anyone in your nonprofit get a salary from it? If yes, it can be commercial.
  5. Are you helping family or friends, or using your own home devices? That's personal.

If you answered yes to any of the first four, use a licensed version so your sessions aren't cut short.

If you're unsure, TeamViewer's knowledge base has a separate article explaining what private use means. It's worth reading before you install it on a work laptop, because the rules follow the device.

My verdict: TeamViewer is free for helping friends and family and for your own personal devices. The moment work is involved, including a quick look at your office inbox, it's commercial in TeamViewer's eyes, so use a licensed tool for that and keep the free version for home.
