Before changing anything, work out how wide the problem is. Open YouTube on another device or another network.
- If every thumbnail is blank, everywhere, the cause is probably your connection, app or browser.
- If only one video's thumbnail is missing or wrong, the cause is probably that video's thumbnail settings.
- If other people see it fine and you don't, think cache, extensions or an old app.
Quick fixes when YouTube thumbnails will not load for you
These come from YouTube's page on video errors, and they apply when the whole site is behaving badly:
- Restart your internet connection, then reload YouTube.
- Check you're signed in.
- Update the YouTube app or your browser.
- Close the app and reopen it, or restart the device.
- Try again later in case it's a short service interruption.
A slow connection can leave images blank while text appears. YouTube's help suggests a speed test, and if the speed is low, lowering the video quality, which also eases the load on the connection.
Clearing the browser cache when YouTube thumbnails are blank
On a computer, YouTube lists the usual browser culprits: an outdated browser, corrupted cache or cookies, and ad blockers or other extensions. Work through them one at a time:
- Update your browser.
- Clear the cache and cookies.
- Turn off ad blockers and extensions, or open an incognito window with extensions off.
- Reload YouTube and look at the thumbnails again.
Incognito is a quick test. If thumbnails appear there, one of your extensions or your stored data is the problem, and you can turn extensions back on one by one to find it.
Thumbnails not loading on the YouTube phone app
On a phone, update the YouTube app first. On Android, YouTube's cache steps are Settings, Apps, YouTube, Storage, Clear cache. On an iPhone you'd offload and reinstall the app from iPhone Storage. Creators: your YouTube thumbnail is not showing yet
If you've just uploaded a custom thumbnail, patience is the first answer. YouTube's custom thumbnail page says changes can take time to appear on YouTube. Check again after a while before you re-upload, because uploading repeatedly won't speed it up.
There's a daily limit too. Each channel has a limit on custom thumbnail uploads, and if you see "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached", YouTube says to try again in 24 hours. The limit varies by country or region and channel history, and strikes can reduce it.
Why a custom YouTube thumbnail will not upload or save
YouTube sets requirements that, if missed, can stop a thumbnail from sticking:

- Your account has to be verified to upload your own thumbnails, for videos and for Shorts.
- The image must be a JPG or PNG.
- On mobile the file size limit is 2 MB for video thumbnails. On a desktop it's 50 MB.
- The thumbnail has to follow the Community Guidelines. Images with nudity, hate speech, violence or harmful content can be rejected and may result in a strike.
If you're trying to add a custom Shorts thumbnail, YouTube says that can only be done in YouTube Studio on a computer, so you won't find it in the phone app.
Thumbnail cropped or swapped for a vertical video
A thumbnail that looks different from the one you uploaded isn't always a loading fault. YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail on a vertical video is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home and explore pages, among others. It still appears on the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms. Plan your design so the important part survives the change.
Thumbnails switched off in search
One more thing YouTube says openly: it may turn off custom thumbnails for certain search results if it considers them inappropriate for viewers. If your thumbnail shows on the video page but not in search, that could be the reason. Review the Community Guidelines and your image, and compare it with what other creators in your niche use. A calmer, clearer design is usually the safer route.
Checking your own YouTube thumbnails the sensible way
