The best AI rewriter depends on what you're rewriting: a free paraphraser suits a sentence or a paragraph, an article rewriter suits whole posts, and a writing assistant suits emails and messages. Nine options follow in no particular order.
An AI rewriter takes words you already have and says them another way. Used well, it turns a clunky paragraph into something people want to read. Used badly, it turns someone else's article into a lookalike that helps nobody.
The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from free browser paraphrasers to tools built for rewriting at volume. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If you're working on the writing itself, my piece on what SEO writing involves is a good companion.

Paraphraser, article rewriter or writing assistant?
A paraphraser works best on short text: a sentence that sounds stiff, or a paragraph you've repeated too often. An article rewriter handles whole posts and usually offers modes, from light edits to heavy restructuring. A writing assistant sits where you write, such as email, and suggests rewrites as you go.
For everyday writing, the first and third are the ones to look at. The second is where things go wrong, because it's tempting to feed in pages you didn't write.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
What Google says about rewriting at scale
Google's spam policies describe scaled content abuse as generating many pages for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users, no matter how it's created. Using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value is one of the examples it lists.
That's the line to remember. Rewriting your own draft so it reads better is editing. Spinning other people's pages into new ones to publish in bulk is the thing the policy is aimed at, and no tool makes that safe.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Will I mostly rewrite sentences, paragraphs or full articles?
- Does it keep my meaning, or does it drift into a different point?
- Can I pick a tone, such as formal, simple or friendly?
- Does it work where I write, such as a browser extension or document upload?
- What happens to the text I paste in, and is it stored?
- Is the free version enough for how often I write?
Signs a rewrite has gone too far
- The point has shifted. Compare the meaning, not just the words.
- Facts have changed. Names, dates and claims can quietly move.
- It sounds like everyone else. Generic phrasing creeps in fast.
- It's longer. A good rewrite usually gets shorter, not padded.
Where a rewriter earns its place
Rewriters shine on emails you've written in a rush, product descriptions that all sound the same and old posts you're refreshing. They're weakest on anything that needs your opinion, because they can only rearrange what's already there.
Do you make AI rewriter tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on using an AI rewriter
Write your own first draft, then use a rewriter on the bits that feel awkward. Read every suggestion out loud before you accept it, because a smoother sentence isn't always a truer one, and these tools sometimes swap a precise word for a vague one.
Keep a short list of phrases you always use and words you never use, and check the rewrite against it. That's how your writing still sounds like you. My content writing tips cover the habits that matter more than any tool.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI rewriter?
It's a tool that uses AI to rephrase text you give it, keeping the meaning while changing the wording, sentence structure or tone.
Is an AI rewriter the same as a paraphrasing tool?
They overlap. Paraphrasing tools usually focus on sentences and paragraphs, while rewriters often handle whole articles and offer several rewriting modes.
Are there free AI rewriter tools?
Yes. Several tools in the table name a free version or a free tool on their own site. Check the free plan column for each one.
Can Google tell if content was rewritten by AI?
Google says it cares about whether content helps people, not how it was made, but generating many pages without adding value breaks its spam policies.
Is it plagiarism to use an AI rewriter?
Rewording someone else's work without credit can still be plagiarism. Rewriting your own draft, or quoting and crediting a source, is a different matter.
How do I keep my own voice when rewriting?
Rewrite in small sections, reject changes that sound unlike you, and keep a list of your usual phrases to check against.
