To delete a PayPal account, log in on the web, go to Settings, click Close your account under Account options, then Close Account. PayPal won't let you close it while there's a balance, an account limitation or an unresolved issue like an open dispute, and once it's closed it can't be reopened.
Closing PayPal is three clicks when everything's tidy. When it isn't, the close button simply won't work, and most of the frustration comes from not knowing why. Here's the process, what blocks it, and the loose ends to tie up so you're not caught out later.
How to close your PayPal account
- Log in to PayPal on the web and open Settings.
- Under Account options, click Close your account.
- Click Close Account to confirm.
That's it. PayPal is clear that a closed account can't be reopened, so if you might want PayPal again, it suggests keeping the account open instead.
Why PayPal won't let you close your account
| What's blocking you | How to clear it |
|---|---|
| Money in your PayPal balance | Transfer it to your bank first |
| An account limitation | Resolve the limitation in your account before trying again |
| An open dispute or claim | Wait for it to finish or close it |
| Other unresolved issues | Check your notifications and the Resolution Center |
PayPal says it's not possible to close an account with a remaining balance, an account limitation or other unresolved issues. A balance of a few cents is enough to stop you, so check carefully after you withdraw, and wait for any pending payments to complete before you try again.
Checklist before you delete PayPal
- Withdraw your whole balance to your bank.
- Cancel subscriptions and automatic payments set up through PayPal, then update those services with a new payment method.
- Download your transaction history and any tax documents you need.
- Check for payments you didn't authorise and report them in the Resolution Center before you close.
- Tell anyone who pays you through PayPal, such as clients or platforms, where to send money in future.
What closing doesn't do
Closing your account doesn't wipe out what you owe. PayPal's user agreement says you remain liable for all obligations related to your account even after it's closed. If there's a pending refund, chargeback or fee, it can still follow you.
PayPal-branded credit products are a separate question too. PayPal has its own help article on whether you can keep using its credit cards or PayPal Credit after closing your PayPal account, so read that first if you have one, rather than assuming they close or stay open automatically.
Personal vs business accounts
For a personal account, PayPal's user agreement says closing it also closes any linked Balance Account automatically. For a business account, you must withdraw or transfer the balance before closing. If you run a business through PayPal, update your invoices, website checkout and any platforms that pay you before you close, or payments will fail.
Other accounts PayPal closes separately
Some related accounts have their own process. PayPal publishes separate help for closing a Xoom account, closing a dispute or claim, and closing the account of a relative who has died. If you're dealing with one of those, follow that specific article rather than the general steps.
Closing PayPal after a hack or scam
If you're closing PayPal because someone got into your account or you paid a scammer, don't close it first. PayPal asks you to report any payment you didn't authorise right away in the Resolution Center, and you'll want the account open while that's investigated. A closed account can't be reopened, so you could lose access to the very records you need.
- Change your PayPal password and the password on the email linked to it.
- Report unauthorised payments in the Resolution Center.
- Remove cards and bank accounts you no longer want linked.
- Wait until disputes are resolved and any refund has landed.
- Withdraw the balance and close the account.
Can you delete PayPal from the app?
PayPal's help article walks through closing on the web: Settings, then Close your account under Account options. If you can't find the option on your phone, log in from a computer or your phone's browser and use the web steps, which work the same way for personal accounts.

Should you delete PayPal or just stop using it?
If the reason is privacy, closing makes sense. If it's that you don't use PayPal much, consider leaving it open with no balance and no cards attached. Some online shops, freelance platforms and international clients still prefer PayPal, and a closed account can't be brought back if you need it. Removing your cards and bank account achieves most of the safety benefit without the permanence, and you can always close the account later once you're sure you won't need it.
My verdict
Empty the balance, clear any disputes, move your subscriptions, then close. Do it in that order and it takes minutes. Skip a step and you'll either hit a close button that won't work or find a subscription failing a week later. If you're switching to a different money app, my reviews of Revolut and Rocket Money cover two common replacements, one for sending money and one for tracking subscriptions.
