How to Remove Watermarks in Canva (the Legit Ways)

Canva watermarks only appear on premium elements when you're on the free plan. To remove them, swap the premium element for a free one, buy a licence for that element, or use Canva Pro or Teams, where premium content has no watermark. If you're already on Pro and still see watermarks, you're probably in the wrong account or team.

You've finished your design, gone to download it and there's a grid of Canva logos across one of the photos. It's not a bug. It's Canva telling you that element is premium. The good news is there's almost always a way round it that doesn't involve upgrading, and you'll learn to spot premium elements before you use them.

Why Canva puts watermarks on your design

Canva's library mixes free and premium content: photos, graphics, videos, templates and audio. Canva's help centre says premium elements show watermarks on your design if you're a Canva Free user. The watermark is a preview. It lets you see how the element looks before you decide whether to use it.

Three ways to remove Canva watermarks

OptionHowBest when
Swap it for a free elementDelete the premium element and search for a free alternativeYou want a clean file and don't mind a different image
Licence that elementSelect Remove watermarks on the element, or license premium elements when downloadingYou love that exact photo or graphic
Use Canva Pro or TeamsUpgrade your accountYou use premium content every week

How to swap a premium element for a free one

  1. Click the watermarked photo or graphic to select it.
  2. Delete it, or keep it selected and use Replace.
  3. Search the library for something similar.
  4. Use the filters in the search panel to show free content only, so you aren't caught out again.
  5. Download once all the watermarks have gone.

Uploading your own photos is another easy fix. Anything you upload yourself never carries a Canva watermark, and real photos of your business usually perform better than stock anyway.

The catch: an element licence only covers one design

This one trips people up. If you're on the free plan and license a premium element, Canva says the licence covers unlimited edits and downloads in that same design only. Use the same photo in a different design and the watermark comes back, because you'd need a new licence for the new design. So if you plan to reuse an image across lots of posts, licensing element by element adds up quickly, and either a free alternative or Canva Pro makes more sense.

Still seeing watermarks on Canva Pro?

If you're on Pro or Teams and still see watermarks, Canva says you're probably in the wrong account or team. It happens a lot when people have a personal account and a work team. Check by selecting your account icon and looking at which team you're in. Switch to the team that has the plan, then open the design again. If you licensed an element earlier, you'll find it in your Purchased folder in the account you used.

Watermarks on a Canva Print proof

If you're ordering prints on the free plan and used premium elements, the PDF proof Canva asks you to check will be watermarked. Don't panic. Canva explains the watermark won't appear on your actual printed order once you've completed checkout, because the premium elements are licensed as part of the order.

What you shouldn't do

You'll find tips online for cropping, covering or editing out watermarks. Don't. Apart from looking messy, it means using content you haven't licensed, and the people who created those photos and graphics deserve to be credited for their work. There are plenty of free elements and free stock sites to choose from instead.

Free access for teachers and students

If you're a K-12 teacher or student, check whether you qualify for Canva Education. Canva says it gives eligible teachers and students its premium features free, which includes premium content without watermarks.

Is Canva Pro worth it just to remove watermarks?

Only if you'd use the premium library often. If watermarks pop up once in a while, swapping elements is free and takes a minute. If you find yourself licensing elements every week, or your team keeps hitting watermarked templates, Pro is the simpler choice and you'll get the brand kit and other tools too.

How to avoid watermarks from the start

  • Filter searches to free content when you're browsing photos and graphics.
  • Look for the crown or premium label on thumbnails before dragging them in.
  • Use your own photos wherever you can.
  • Build a folder of free elements you like so you can reuse them.
  • Check templates too, because some include premium photos you'll need to replace.

My verdict

Watermarks only appear on premium elements on the free plan, so the quickest fix is swapping them for free ones or your own photos. License an element only if you'll use it in just that one design. If you're on Pro and still seeing them, switch to the right team. And if you use premium content every week, Canva Pro is the simpler answer.
