While you're in a voice call or voice channel on your phone, tap the speaker icon at the top right of the call screen. If you don't see it, swipe up from the bottom of the call screen to open the audio options, tap the output option and choose Speaker. It works the same way on iPhone and Android.
Those are the two routes Discord's own mobile guide describes. The icon changes to show where sound is going: a speaker, an earpiece, headphones or a Bluetooth symbol. If it shows Bluetooth, that's your clue to the most common problem.
The catch: a connected Bluetooth device always grabs the audio first. Earbuds sitting in their charging case, your car, a smartwatch or a speaker in the next room can all still be connected, so Discord sends the call there and Speaker won't stick. Switch Bluetooth off, or disconnect that device, and try again.
Steps on Android
- Join the voice channel or start the call.
- Open the full call screen. If you've left it, tap the green voice bar at the bottom of Discord to go back.
- Tap the speaker icon at the top right.
- If a list appears, pick Speaker. If it only toggles, check the icon now shows a speaker.
- Still nothing? Swipe up from the bottom of the call screen, tap the audio output option and choose Speaker there.
Steps on iPhone
- Join the voice channel or call.
- On the call screen, tap the audio output icon at the top right.
- In the list that opens, pick Speaker. On some versions this option is labelled iPhone instead.
- If you have AirPods or another Bluetooth device connected, you'll see them in the same list. Pick Speaker to move the sound off them.
A Discord support reply on its community forum explained that the iPhone app dropped its earpiece-only mode, so choosing the iPhone option now plays through the loudspeaker. That's why some people see iPhone where they expect Speaker.
Discord redesigns its call screen now and then. If the icons look different, look for anything that looks like a speaker or audio waves on the call screen, or swipe up for the full set of options.
Why the sound comes out of the earpiece
If voices are coming through the small earpiece at the top of your phone, there are three usual reasons:
- The call started in phone-call mode. Some Android phones treat a Discord call like a normal phone call and default to the earpiece. Tapping the speaker icon once a call is running fixes it for that call.
- The proximity sensor kicked in. Holding the phone near your face, or a thick case covering the sensor near the top, can make the phone switch to earpiece mode and turn the screen off. Hold it away from you and tap Speaker again.
- Something else is connected. A Bluetooth device or wired headphones take priority over the speaker. Check your Bluetooth list in the phone's quick settings.
If you're also having trouble being heard, the problem's usually on the microphone side, not the speaker. My guide on fixing a Discord mic that isn't working covers permissions, input sensitivity and the rest.
Problem and fix at a glance
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| No speaker icon on the call screen | Swipe up from the bottom of the call screen and pick Speaker from the audio options |
| Speaker switches back to earbuds | Disconnect the Bluetooth device or turn Bluetooth off |
| Sound only from the earpiece | Tap the speaker icon after the call starts and hold the phone away from your face |
| Speaker on, but very quiet | Raise the phone volume during the call, then check Discord's output volume |
| One person is loud, another is quiet | Tap the quiet person and raise their user volume slider |
| No sound at all | Check the phone isn't on silent or in a Focus mode, and that you haven't deafened yourself |
When the speaker's on but it's too quiet
- Press the volume up button during the call. Your phone keeps a separate volume for calls and for media, and Discord voice often uses the call volume. Turning it up while you're not in a call can change the wrong one.
- Check Discord's own output volume. Go to the You tab, open settings and look for the Voice section. There's an output volume slider there.
- Turn up one person. In the voice channel, tap the person's name or picture. Their profile card has a user volume slider that only changes how loud they are for you.
- Check you're not deafened. The headphones icon with a line through it means you've deafened yourself, so you'll hear nothing until you tap it again.
If the problem is the opposite and Discord's pings are too loud on speaker, here's how to turn off the Discord notification sound without muting your calls.
Voice messages, the soundboard and headphones
Speaker mode only applies to live calls. Other sound in Discord follows slightly different rules, and it's worth knowing them so you don't chase the wrong problem.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Voice messages. Discord's help centre says these play through a connected audio device if there is one, and through the phone's speaker if there isn't. So a voice message that seems silent is often playing in earbuds sitting in your bag.
- Soundboard sounds. These play to everyone in the voice channel through whatever output each person has picked. If you can't hear them, fix your speaker first, then check the soundboard's own settings. My guide on using the soundboard on Discord shows where those controls live.
- Wired headphones. Plugging in headphones moves the call to them straight away. Unplug them and the sound should come back to the phone; if it lands on the earpiece instead, tap the speaker icon again.
One habit helps here: before you join a call, glance at the Bluetooth icon in your phone's status bar. If it's showing a connection you didn't expect, sort that first and the speaker will behave.
My verdict
I'd check Bluetooth first every time, because it's the reason in most cases where Speaker refuses to stay on. After that, tap the speaker icon once the call's running and use the volume buttons during the call, not before.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the speaker button on Discord mobile?
It's at the top right of the voice call screen. If you can't see it, swipe up from the bottom of the call screen to open the audio options and choose Speaker.
Why does Discord keep switching off speaker?
A connected Bluetooth device is usually taking the audio. Disconnect it or turn Bluetooth off, then pick Speaker again.
Why does Discord play through my earpiece on Android?
Some phones start Discord calls in phone-call mode, which uses the earpiece. Tap the speaker icon once the call has started to move the sound to the loudspeaker.
Can I make one person louder on Discord mobile?
Yes. Tap their name or picture in the voice channel and use the user volume slider on their profile card. It only changes what you hear.
