A UPI number is a bank-verified numeric ID, 8 to 10 digits long, that people can pay instead of typing your UPI ID. It's usually your mobile number, but you can pick a different number if you'd rather not share your phone number.
It points to the same bank account as your UPI ID. The difference is only in how people find you: a number is easier to read out at a shop counter than an address like name@bank.
UPI number, UPI ID and phone number: the differences
| What it looks like | Who sets it | |
|---|---|---|
| UPI ID | name@bankhandle | Created by your UPI app when you add a bank account |
| UPI number | 8 to 10 digits | You, from the bank account settings in your app |
| Mobile number | Your 10-digit phone number | Works as a UPI number once it's linked |
Google's help page says you can create up to 3 UPI numbers for each ID. Most people only need one.
The catch that sends payments to the wrong app
This is the one that confuses people. Under NPCI rules, if a person links their phone number to a UPI ID in one app, payments made to that phone number go to the app they linked, not necessarily the app the sender used. Google's help page gives the example of paying someone on Google Pay and the payment landing in their other UPI app.
The funds still reach the same person, but maybe a different bank account than the sender expected. Google adds that payments to a UPI ID or number go to the bank account linked to it, unless both people use Google Pay with linked phone numbers, in which case it goes to the receiver's default account in the app. If you want your phone number payments to arrive in a specific app and account, create the UPI number in that app.
How to create a UPI number in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Under Payment methods, tap Bank account.
- Pick the bank account you want the number to point to.
- Tap Manage UPI numbers.
- Follow the on-screen steps to use your mobile number or create a custom number.
Other UPI apps keep this setting in the same place: the bank account or UPI ID settings. If the wording differs, search the app's settings for UPI number.
Rules for a custom number
If you choose your own number, Google lists three rules:
- It can't be all the same digit, such as all zeroes.
- It can't end with the same 3 digits, such as a number ending 555.
- It can't be in serial order, ascending or descending.
A custom number is useful if you run a small stall and don't want your personal mobile number printed on a board for everyone to see. I'd pick something memorable but not your birthday or anything else that identifies you.
How to pay someone using their UPI number
- Open Google Pay and tap Pay Anyone.
- Enter the person's 10-digit mobile number or their UPI number.
- Pick the result shown under UPI Numbers.
- Tap Pay, enter the amount and an optional note.
- Choose your bank account, tap Pay and enter your UPI PIN.
Always check the name that appears before you enter your PIN. A UPI number shows the bank-verified name of the person it belongs to. If the name doesn't match who you meant to pay, stop.
Fixes for common UPI number problems
- Status stuck on pending: Google says creation depends on the readiness of the payment service provider. You'll get a notification when it's done, and in the meantime people can pay your UPI ID.
- Can't pay someone's phone number: they may not have linked their phone number to a UPI ID. Ask for their UPI ID instead.
- No OTP when creating it: check you can receive SMS, use your default messaging app, and pause call-blocker or messaging apps for a moment.
- Can't delete it: look for pending actions, such as a live autopay mandate, and deal with those first.
How to delete a UPI number
Go to the same screen: profile, Bank account, pick the account, then Manage UPI numbers. Tap delete next to the number and confirm. Deleting the number doesn't close your bank account or your UPI ID. You'll still be able to pay and be paid by ID.

Where a UPI number helps most
Three situations come up again and again. The first is a small shop or stall, where customers want to pay quickly and a QR code is either missing, faded or out of reach. Saying a number out loud is faster than anyone typing a UPI ID letter by letter. The second is family payments, where an older relative finds it easier to pay a number they already have saved in their contacts. The third is freelancers who get paid by clients that don't use the same app. A UPI number works across UPI apps, so the client doesn't need to install anything new.
One thing a UPI number doesn't do is hide your name. The payer still sees the bank-verified name on the account before they pay. That's a safety feature, not a flaw, because it lets people check they've got the right person. If you want a business name to show instead of your personal name, that's a merchant account question for your bank, not a UPI number setting.
Should you set one up?
If people often pay you, yes. A number you can read out is quicker than spelling a UPI ID, and fewer typos means fewer wrong payments. If you'd rather keep your mobile number private, use a custom UPI number instead. Either way, never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone who says they need it to "activate" your UPI number. Real setup only happens inside your own app.

Frequently asked questions
Is my UPI number the same as my mobile number?
It can be. Your mobile number works as a UPI number once you link it, or you can create a custom 8 to 10 digit number instead.
How many UPI numbers can one person create?
Google Pay says you can create up to 3 UPI numbers for each ID.
Why did a payment to my phone number go to another app?
NPCI rules send phone number payments to the app where you linked the number to a UPI ID. Create the UPI number in the app you want to use.
Does deleting a UPI number close my account?
No. Your bank account and UPI ID stay active. Only the number stops working.
