UPI Lite is a small balance stored on your phone, inside your UPI app, that you top up from your bank account and then spend on small payments without typing your UPI PIN each time. It's built for everyday buys like tea, auto fares and snacks, where speed matters more than a full bank check.
You still use your UPI PIN, just less often. Google's help page says you enter it when you load the UPI Lite balance, not for each small payment after that.
How UPI Lite works, in plain words
Think of it as a coin purse that sits next to your bank account. You move a small amount into it once. After that, small payments come out of the purse instantly, and your bank statement doesn't fill up with dozens of tiny entries. When the purse runs low, you top it up again, either by hand or with an automatic top-up.
| Normal UPI payment | UPI Lite payment | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the funds come from | Straight from your bank account | From the Lite balance on your phone |
| UPI PIN | Every payment | Only when you load the balance |
| Best for | Any payment | Small, frequent payments |
| Size of payment | Up to your bank's UPI limit | Small payments only, with a per-payment cap shown in your app |
The caps on UPI Lite are set centrally and have changed over time, so I won't quote a figure that could be out of date by next month. Your app shows the current per-payment and balance limits on the UPI Lite screen.
The catch most people miss
UPI Lite lives on your device. That's why it's fast, and it's also the risk. Google's help page says that if you lose your phone, you have to contact your bank to get the balance back, and the bank can take 10 business days to sort it. If you switch phones but keep the same mobile number, the balance stays with you. If you lose access to that number, it's the bank you'll be talking to.
So my rule is simple: keep the UPI Lite balance small. Load what you'd carry in your pocket for a few days, not a week's spending.
How to turn on UPI Lite in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Tap UPI Lite.
- Enter the amount you want to add.
- Enter your UPI PIN to load it.
PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM have the same feature, usually on the profile or payments screen. If the label looks different on your phone, search the app's settings for Lite.
Google notes that only some banks support UPI Lite, and the list grows over time. If your bank isn't offered, that's the reason. Google's page also says that if activation fails, you should check you have an @okicici UPI ID on Google Pay, and create one if you don't.
Paying with it
When you pay a contact or a shop, choose UPI Lite under the option to pick which account to pay with. The payment goes through without the PIN. Your Lite balance shows on the Google Pay home screen, and the transaction history sits under the same UPI Lite screen.
Rules worth knowing before you load it
- Loading only from your bank: Google says you add funds from the bank account linked in the app, not from a debit or credit card.
- One per app: you can have one UPI Lite account on Google Pay, and separate ones in other apps.
- Refunds skip Lite: if a shop refunds a UPI Lite payment, the refund goes to your bank account, not back into the Lite balance.
- Failed payment: if funds leave your Lite balance but the payment fails because of a network problem, Google says the amount is credited to your bank account.
- Reinstalling the app: after a reinstall you'll see a Reactivate option next to UPI Lite.
How to switch UPI Lite off
Open the UPI Lite screen in your app and choose Delete UPI Lite, then confirm. Google's page says that when you deregister, the balance is credited back to your bank account. Do this before you sell, trade in or reset a phone. If you have automatic top-ups set, cancel those as well, since an autopay mandate can stop you removing a bank account later.

UPI Lite with automatic top-ups
Google Pay lets you set UPI Lite to top itself up from your bank account when the balance drops below a level you choose. You turn it on from the UPI Lite screen by adding an amount and choosing to continue with Autopay, then entering your UPI PIN. It's handy if you use Lite daily, but remember it creates an autopay mandate on your bank account. If you later want to remove that bank account from the app, Google says you have to unlink any autopay or UPI Lite first.
Help if something goes wrong
For anything involving a stuck balance, your bank is the first stop. NPCI also runs DigiSaathi, a helpline for digital payment questions, which Google lists as 14431 or 1800 891 3333. It can point you to your bank's contact details.
Should you use UPI Lite?
If you make lots of small UPI payments every day, yes. It's quicker at a busy counter and it keeps your bank statement readable. If you rarely pay small amounts, or you share your phone with others, I'd leave it off. And whatever you do, keep the balance low and your phone locked, because a payment without a PIN is only as safe as the phone it's on.
