To link a RuPay credit card to UPI, open your UPI app, choose Add RuPay credit card from your profile, pick your card's bank, verify the card and set a UPI PIN for it. After that you can pay shops and online stores by UPI using your credit limit.
It only works with RuPay credit cards from banks that have switched on UPI for them. Google Pay's add-card option is built for RuPay credit cards specifically, so check the network logo on your card before you start.
The catch: shops only, not people
This is the thing to know before you bother. Google Pay's help page says RuPay credit cards on UPI work for merchant payments: shopping online and paying businesses by scanning a UPI QR code. You can't use the card to pay friends and family, receive funds from them, move funds to your own savings account, or invest in the stock market.
| Payment | Works with RuPay credit card on UPI? |
|---|---|
| Scan a shop's UPI QR code | Yes |
| Pay at an online checkout | Yes |
| Pay a friend or family member | No |
| Receive a payment | No |
| Transfer to your own savings account | No |
| Invest in shares | No |
Google also says some merchants don't accept RuPay credit card payments. If one refuses, pay from your linked bank account instead.
Link it in Google Pay, step by step
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile picture and select Add RuPay credit card.
- Choose your card-issuing bank. If it isn't listed, it probably doesn't offer RuPay credit cards on UPI yet.
- Select the card, if you have more than one.
- Enter the card details to verify it.
- Set a UPI PIN for the card, or enter it if you already have one.
PhonePe, Paytm and bank apps have the same option, usually under payment methods or add a card. If the wording differs, search the app for RuPay.
A separate PIN for your card
Google points out that the UPI PIN for your RuPay credit card can be different from your credit card PIN. Treat it like any UPI PIN: never share it, and use it only to pay. If you forget it, the same add-card screen has a Forgot PIN option.
Google also says the UPI ID created for your RuPay card is only for merchant checkouts. If someone tries to use it to send you funds, it'll fail.
Verify with Aadhaar instead of card details
Some banks let you verify the card through Aadhaar. Google says your Aadhaar has to be linked to the same mobile number as the card, and only a limited number of banks support this. If you don't see the option, use the card details route or ask your bank.
Why linking fails, and the fixes
- Your bank doesn't support it: nothing to do but wait or ask the bank.
- Mobile numbers don't match: the number on your card account has to be the one on your UPI app.
- Wrong OTP or card details: try again slowly.
- Card is brand new: Google says your bank may not have switched on UPI yet. Wait 48 hours and try again.
- Card not activated: activate it with your bank first.
Google also mentions that it sends several SMSes from your phone in the background when you add the card, to improve the success rate, and you pay standard SMS rates for them.
Limits and extra charges
Your credit limit for UPI payments is set by the bank that issued the card, not by the UPI app. Your bank may also let you set a separate limit for UPI in its own mobile banking app. Google notes that some merchants add a small fee for RuPay credit card payments, and that fee goes to the merchant.
Setting the RuPay card as your default for shops
Once the card is linked, you choose it at the payment screen. When you scan a shop's QR code, the app asks which account to pay with. Pick the RuPay credit card, then enter the UPI PIN you set for the card. Google's help page also covers making it your preferred payment method, so it's picked first for merchant payments while your bank account stays the choice for paying people.

Keep an eye on which one is selected before you enter the PIN. Paying a shop from your bank account when you meant to use the card isn't a disaster, but it does mess up your budgeting if you track card spending separately.
A practical tip for budgeting: if your bank's app lets you set a separate spending limit for UPI on the card, set it a little lower than your overall limit at first. Google's page lists the limit you set in your bank's mobile banking app as one of the factors that decides what you can spend through UPI. It's an easy guardrail while you get used to paying by scan.
Removing the card later
If you close the card or want to stop using it on UPI, open your profile, tap RuPay card, choose the card and remove it. If you've set up any AutoPay on the card, cancel that first. Closing the card at your bank also stops it working on UPI, but removing it from the app keeps your payment screen clean.
Is it worth linking?
If you already have a RuPay credit card, yes. It lets you pay small shops by QR with your credit card, which many card machines never reached. It also helps your card's interest-free period work for everyday spending. My caution is the same as with any credit card: it's easy to overspend when paying takes a single scan. Check your card statement weekly for the first month.
