How Much Does Snapchat Pay in Kenya?

Right now Snapchat doesn't pay creators in Kenya, because Kenya isn't on Snap's list of countries eligible for Creator Rewards payouts, so views from a Kenyan account earn nothing directly from Snap. Kenyan creators can still earn around Snapchat through brand deals paid in shillings, and YouTube's Partner Program is open in Kenya if you want views that pay.

I get this question a lot from creators in Nairobi and Mombasa who've built a real following on Snapchat and want to know when the money starts. I'd rather give you the honest answer now than let you post for months waiting for a payout screen that won't appear. Then I'll show you what does pay, and how to keep your Snapchat audience working for you.

Is Kenya on Snapchat's payout list?

No. Snap publishes a help page that lists every country and region where Snapchatters can be paid. There are three lists on it: one for Creator Midroll Ads inside Stories, one for the old Spotlight Reward Program and one for Lens Creator Rewards. Kenya doesn't appear on any of them.

The African countries Snap does list are Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Nigeria. So the gap isn't about Africa as a whole; it's country by country. Snap adds a line saying it's working to make payouts available to more Snapchatters soon, but it doesn't name Kenya or give a date, so I wouldn't plan your income around it.

What this means in practice: you can post Stories and Spotlight videos from Kenya, grow followers and get millions of views, but Snap won't place revenue-sharing ads on your content or send you Creator Rewards while your account sits in a country that isn't on the list.

How Snap pays creators where the programme runs

It helps to know how the system works elsewhere, so you can judge whether chasing it makes sense later. Snap's Monetization Program places ads in a creator's Public Story or inside Spotlight videos, and eligible creators share in that ad revenue. Ads are served mainly based on how long people watch, so watch time matters far more than a raw view count.

The entry bar is high. Snap asks for at least 50,000 followers and fifteen thousand hours of view time over the last 28 days, with at least 3,000 of those hours coming from Spotlight. You also need to be a Snap Star, be at least 18 or the age of legal majority, post original, advertiser-friendly content and live in an eligible country. Spotlight videos need to be at least 30 seconds long to earn.

Snap Star status has no published follower number. Snap says it looks for a large and engaged audience, regular public Stories, authenticity and notability, and that nobody is entitled to the badge. Snap also says it never charges for programme invitations, so ignore anyone in your DMs offering to sell you a monetisation invite.

Why there's no Kenyan rate per thousand views

You'll find websites quoting a Snapchat pay rate per thousand views. Snap doesn't publish one for any country, and for Kenya there's nothing to quote because the payout isn't switched on. Where it does run, the money comes from a share of ad revenue, so it moves with how many advertisers want to reach that audience, how long people watch and what kind of content you post.

That's also why a Kenyan audience can matter even before Snap pays. A brand selling in Kenya cares about Kenyan viewers. Snap's ad share would care about which advertisers bid on those viewers. Your audience location is part of your value either way.

Getting paid in Kenyan shillings from brand work

The route that works today is brand partnerships. Snap's Brand Partnerships setting is a profile toggle that lets brands message eligible creators about collaborations, and its eligibility page lists good standing, a large and engaged audience, authenticity and content quality. The help page doesn't list any country restriction, though Snap decides who's eligible, so check your own profile settings.

Kenyan brand deals are usually agreed and paid locally, in Kenyan shillings (KES, often written KSh), the currency issued by the Central Bank of Kenya. M-Pesa, launched in 2007 by Vodafone and Safaricom, the largest mobile network operator in Kenya, is how a lot of money moves between people and businesses there. If you're new to taking payments that way, my guide to online work that pays through M-Pesa covers what to watch for.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Before you pitch, get a few basics in order: a short media kit with screenshots of your Story views and audience location, a clear rate for a Story set or a Spotlight video, and a simple written agreement that says what you'll post and when you'll be paid.

Platforms that do pay Kenyan creators for views

If you want views that pay directly, YouTube is the obvious move. The YouTube Partner Program availability list includes Kenya, and so does the expanded programme that opens fan funding and shopping features earlier. I've broken down how that works in what YouTube pays Kenyan creators.

A lot of Kenyan Snapchat creators already shoot vertical video, so the jump to YouTube Shorts is small. Post the same idea in both places, see where your audience grows fastest, and keep Snapchat for the close, personal Stories that brands like to buy.

If Snap adds Kenya: what payout would look like

Should Kenya join the list, payouts would run the same way they do in eligible countries. Snap uses a partner called Hyperwallet and a Payout Portal. Creator Rewards sit as Pending for 14 days before they become Available, then cash can take an additional 14 days or longer to arrive. A cash out needs at least 100 US dollars, and Snap converts your available rewards to US dollars, so a Kenyan creator would then withdraw to a bank account or PayPal and pay the transaction and currency conversion fees Hyperwallet charges.

Snap's payout page also points creators to US tax forms (W-8BEN for individuals), and Kenya isn't on the IRS list of countries with a United States income tax treaty. I'm not a tax adviser, so if that day comes, take the forms to a Kenyan accountant before you sign anything.

  • Keep posting public Stories regularly; it's what Snap and brands both look at.
  • Save screenshots of your best Story and Spotlight numbers for your media kit.
  • Agree every brand deal in writing and get paid in KES on your terms.
  • Test YouTube Shorts with your best Snapchat ideas.
  • Check Snap's payout list every few months in case Kenya is added.

Frequently asked questions

Does Snapchat pay creators in Kenya?

No. Kenya isn't on Snap's list of countries eligible for Creator Rewards payouts, so Kenyan accounts don't earn a share of ad revenue from Stories or Spotlight.

Can I use a VPN or a foreign address to get Snapchat payouts in Kenya?

I wouldn't. Snap asks you to reside in an eligible country and your legal name must match your Hyperwallet details, so a false address puts the account and any rewards at risk.

How much do Kenyan Snapchat creators earn from brand deals?

There's no official figure. Rates depend on your audience size, how engaged Kenyan viewers are and the brand's budget, so build a media kit and agree a price in shillings for each job.

Which platform pays Kenyan creators for views instead?

YouTube. The YouTube Partner Program and its expanded version both list Kenya, so eligible channels can earn from ads and fan features.

Is Snapchat+ a way for creators to earn?

No. Snapchat+ is a paid subscription that users buy for extra features. It isn't creator pay.
