To change your UPI PIN, open your UPI app, go to the bank account you use, tap Change UPI PIN, type your old PIN, then set and confirm a new one. You don't need your debit card for this, because the old PIN is the proof that it's you.
If you've forgotten the old PIN, this isn't the right route. Changing needs the current PIN. Forgetting it means a reset, which asks for your debit card or Aadhaar details instead.
The catch most people miss: the PIN belongs to your bank account
Your UPI PIN isn't tied to Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm. It's tied to the bank account. NPCI, the body that runs UPI, says a PIN you set up in one UPI app can be used in the other UPI apps too. So when you change it in one app, expect the new PIN to be the one your bank checks everywhere you use that account.
The flip side matters too. If you have two bank accounts linked, each account has its own UPI PIN. Changing one leaves the other alone.
Change your UPI PIN in Google Pay, step by step
Google's own help page lists these steps for Android, and they match what you'll see on most phones:
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Under Payment methods, tap Bank account.
- Tap the bank account whose PIN you want to change.
- Tap More, then Change UPI PIN.
- Enter your old UPI PIN.
- Create your new UPI PIN.
- Enter the new PIN again to confirm it.
Menus move around between app updates. If a label looks different on your phone, open the bank account screen in your app and look for the words UPI PIN. That's where every UPI app keeps it.
Change it in PhonePe, Paytm or your bank's app
Every UPI app follows the same pattern, even if the buttons are named slightly differently. You go to your profile or payment settings, pick the linked bank account, and choose the option to change the UPI PIN. You'll be asked for the old PIN, then the new one twice.
I'd use whichever app you open most, since the change applies to the bank account. There's no need to repeat it in every app you have.
Change or reset: which one do you need?
| Your situation | What to do | What you'll need |
|---|---|---|
| You know the current PIN and want a new one | Change UPI PIN | Your old UPI PIN |
| You've forgotten the PIN | Forgot UPI PIN (reset) | Debit card details, or Aadhaar if your bank supports it |
| You typed the wrong PIN 3 times today | Wait 24 hours, or reset now | Debit card or Aadhaar for the reset |
| The PIN works in one app but not another | Reset in the app that refuses it | Debit card or Aadhaar |
Watch the wrong-PIN counter before you start
Google Pay's help page spells out the limit. If you enter 2 wrong UPI PINs within 24 hours, you'll get an alert suggesting a reset. If you enter it wrongly 3 times within 24 hours, UPI payments on that account are blocked for a while, and to use the same PIN again you have to wait 24 hours.
NPCI adds that the exact lock rules vary from bank to bank. So if you're not sure of the old PIN, don't guess your way through the change screen. Every failed attempt counts. Go straight to Forgot UPI PIN instead, which skips the guessing.
Picking a new PIN that's hard to guess
A UPI PIN is either 4 or 6 digits, depending on what your bank asks for. A few plain rules help:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Skip birthdays, the last digits of your phone number and easy runs of digits in order.
- Don't reuse your ATM PIN unless your bank requires it. Google notes that Citibank is one bank that asks for the ATM PIN as the UPI PIN.
- Don't confuse it with your bank's MPIN. NPCI says the MPIN your bank issued is a different thing from the UPI PIN.
- Never write it in your phone's notes app next to your bank name.
Nobody legitimate will ever ask for it
NPCI's own FAQ is blunt about this: UPI apps don't store or read your PIN, and your bank's customer support will never ask for it. Anyone who calls, messages or comments asking for your UPI PIN to "complete a refund" or "verify your account" is trying to take your funds. Hang up.
One more thing I tell people: you only ever type your UPI PIN to pay or to change settings. You never type it to receive a payment. If a screen asks for your PIN to collect a payment, it's a scam request, and you should decline it. My checklist on spotting dodgy earning apps covers the same tricks, see this earning app safety checklist.
If the change fails
- Old PIN rejected: you may have set a different PIN in another app. Google's help page mentions exactly this. Use Forgot UPI PIN instead of guessing.
- No Change UPI PIN option: update the app, then check you're on the bank account screen, not the UPI ID screen.
- Account blocked after wrong tries: wait the 24 hours or do a reset with your debit card.
- Still stuck: contact your bank. The PIN lives with them, not with the app.
A quick routine that keeps the PIN safe
Changing the PIN is half the job. The other half is how you type it. Cover the screen with your other hand at shop counters, because a phone held at chest height is easy to read from behind. Turn on your phone's own screen lock and the app lock inside your UPI app, so a borrowed or lost phone can't be used to pay. And if you've shared your phone with a family member who watched you pay, that's a good moment to change the PIN too.
My advice? Change your PIN once a year, or straight away if you've ever typed it while someone could see your screen. It takes under a minute and it's the cheapest protection you've got. If you use UPI to collect payouts from apps, read which Paytm cash-out apps are safe too.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my debit card to change my UPI PIN?
No. To change it you only need your current UPI PIN. Your debit card or Aadhaar details are needed when you've forgotten the PIN and have to reset it.
Will my new UPI PIN work in all my UPI apps?
The PIN is linked to your bank account, and NPCI says a PIN set in one UPI app can be used in other UPI apps. So the new PIN is the one to use for that account.
How many digits is a UPI PIN?
It's either 4 or 6 digits, depending on your bank.
What if I enter the wrong UPI PIN 3 times?
Google Pay says UPI payments get blocked temporarily. You can wait 24 hours or reset the PIN to pay again straight away.
