To end an Instagram Live, tap the X (Close) in the top right of the screen, then tap End Now to confirm. Your broadcast stops straight away for everyone watching, and you land on a screen where you can share the replay as a reel, download it, or leave it in your private Live archive.
That's the whole action, and it takes two taps. What trips people up is the screen that comes next, because the choice you make there decides whether your followers can ever watch the replay. I'll walk you through every option so you don't lose a good broadcast by tapping the wrong thing in a hurry.
The catch most people miss: Instagram's Help Centre says a replay you share won't include any of the likes or comments from the original Live, the viewer count starts again from zero once you share it, and you can't edit or trim the video before sharing it as a replay. So if you want the comments or a tidy cut, sort that out before you share, not after.
Ending your Live in two taps
- While you're live, look at the top right corner of the screen.
- Tap the X (Instagram calls it Close).
- A confirmation appears. Tap End Now.
- Your Live stops for every viewer and any guests in the room at the same moment.
- You'll see the after-Live screen with options to share, download or leave it.
If a menu name looks different on your phone, search the app's settings or the Help Centre for the word Live. Instagram moves labels around between versions, but the X in the corner has stayed put for a long time.
One small habit that helps: say goodbye on camera before you tap. Viewers who joined late will hear you wrap up, and the replay won't end mid-sentence.
Your three choices after the broadcast ends
The screen after a Live is where the replay gets decided. Here's what each option does, based on what Instagram's Help Centre describes.
| Option | What it does | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Share (as a reel) | Opens the reels publish screen so you can add a caption and tag people, then posts the replay to your profile and Feed | Whoever can see your reels |
| Download | Saves the video to your phone's camera roll | Only you, unless you post it somewhere |
| Leave it | The Live sits in your Live archive if archiving is switched on | Only you, until you share it |
Instagram's own Start a Live article notes that when you save or download a Live, only the video is kept. Comments, likes and viewer details don't come with it. It also warns that longer broadcasts can take a minute to save to your phone, so don't close the app the second you tap Download.
Finding the replay later in your Live archive
If you skipped sharing in the moment, you haven't lost it. Instagram keeps Lives in your Live archive as long as the Save Live to Archive setting is on. Here's the path the Help Centre gives for the iPhone app, and Android is very close:
- Go to your profile by tapping your picture in the bottom right.
- Tap the Menu (three lines) in the top right.
- Tap Archive.
- Tap Stories archive at the top, then switch to Live archive.
- Tap the broadcast you want, then tap Share to open the reels publish screen.
Archived Lives can't be seen by anyone else unless you choose to share them. That makes the archive a handy safety net: go live, end it, sleep on it, and decide the next morning whether it's good enough for your grid.
One thing worth knowing from that same Help Centre article: archived Lives that you've shared publicly may be used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them or make your account private. If that bothers you, keep the ones you care about in the archive or download them instead.
Turning off archiving, and deleting a Live
You can switch archiving off at any time. Instagram's path is: tap Create, tap Live, tap Settings, tap Live, then turn off Save Live to Archive. Be careful here. The Help Centre says turning it off means Lives you broadcast from that point on won't be kept, so if you end a Live without sharing or downloading it, it's gone.
Deleting is simpler. Open the broadcast in your Live archive and use the options to delete it. If you already shared it as a reel, delete it like any other reel from your profile. The archive copy and the shared reel are separate, so you may want to remove both.

The limit that decides whether you can go live at all
Before you worry about ending a Live, check you can start one. Instagram's Help Centre now says only people with a public account and at least 1,000 followers can start a live video. Teen Accounts have it switched off by default: teens under 16 need a parent or guardian's permission to turn it on, while 16 and 17 year olds can turn it on themselves.
The same article adds that newly created accounts may not be able to go live, and neither may accounts that have had posts removed for breaking Instagram's Community Standards. If the Live option is missing, your Account Status in settings is the place to look.
If you're new to broadcasting, my step by step guide to going live on Instagram covers the set-up side, and if you'd like company on camera, here's how to add someone to your Instagram Live.
What I'd do at the end of every Live
- Pin your call to action early. You can pin a comment during the Live, and that's the moment people are watching. The replay won't carry it.
- Download first, share second. A copy on your phone means you can trim it later and repost a highlight, which the replay itself won't let you do.
- Write a real caption. The replay starts with zero views, so the caption has to tell people why the next few minutes are worth their time.
- Keep the archive switched on. It costs you nothing and saves you from the one Live you forgot to download.
My honest take: ending the Live is the easy part. The replay is where most of your views come from, because many of your followers won't be online at the exact moment you broadcast. Treat the after-Live screen as the start of the second half, not the finish line. If you're curious how viewers find a Live from the other side, my guide on how to watch an Instagram Live video shows what they see.
Frequently asked questions
How do I end an Instagram Live?
Tap the X (Close) in the top right of your screen, then tap End Now. The broadcast stops for everyone and you'll see options to share, download or keep it in your archive.
Where does my Instagram Live go after I end it?
If Save Live to Archive is on, it goes to your Live archive, which only you can see. Find it under Menu, Archive, then Live archive.
Does the replay keep the comments from my Live?
No. Instagram's Help Centre says replays don't include likes or comments from the original Live, and the viewer count restarts once you share it.
Can I trim my Live before sharing the replay?
Not inside the replay share. Instagram says you can't edit or trim it before sharing. Download it to your phone first if you want to cut a shorter clip.
Why can't I go live on Instagram?
Instagram says you need a public account with at least 1,000 followers. New accounts, Teen Accounts without permission and accounts with past Community Standards removals may also be blocked.
