Why Won't My Instagram Highlight Cover Load?

If you are skim reading
The short version: most highlight cover loading failures come down to a cached app, a corrupted cover image, or Instagram's servers having a wobble, not your phone being broken.

The short version: most highlight cover loading failures come down to a cached app, a corrupted cover image, or Instagram's servers having a wobble, not your phone being broken. Try the fixes in order below rather than randomly tapping things, and if nothing works after ten minutes, rebuild the highlight from scratch rather than fighting it.

What's happening when a highlight cover won't load

A highlight cover is a tiny edited image sitting on top of a saved group of stories. When it won't load you'll usually see one of three things: a blank grey circle, a spinning wheel that never finishes, or the generic first-frame thumbnail sitting there instead of the custom cover you chose. Each of these points to a slightly different cause, which is why the usual advice of "just restart your phone" only works about half the time.

Instagram stores highlight covers separately from the stories inside them. The cover is a compressed image file cached locally on your device and synced to Instagram's content delivery network. When those two versions disagree, which happens more than Instagram would like to admit, the app shows you nothing rather than guessing wrong.

The six most common causes

  • App cache bloat. If you've had Instagram installed for over a year without clearing data, the app is holding onto thousands of old thumbnails and some of them conflict with new ones.
  • A corrupted cover image. This happens often with covers pulled from third-party highlight cover apps or Canva templates exported at the wrong size.
  • Weak or switching connection. Covers load last in the queue behind your feed and stories, so on patchy wifi they can time out silently.
  • Instagram server issues. Meta has outages. Small, regional, unannounced ones happen weekly and rarely make the news.
  • Outdated app version. Older builds sometimes can't render covers edited on a newer version of the app.
  • Account-level throttling. If your account has been flagged for unusual activity, some visual elements load slower or not at all as part of a review process.

A worked example

Say you run a small skincare brand account with four highlights: Reviews, Ingredients, FAQs, and Shipping. One morning the Shipping cover won't load on your own phone but your business partner can see it fine on hers. That mismatch is the giveaway. It's not a server-wide outage, because she can see it. It's not a broken image file, because it renders correctly elsewhere. It's local cache on your device specifically. The fix in that exact situation isn't to re-edit the cover, it's to clear your own app cache and reopen the profile. Nine times out of ten that single step resolves it within sixty seconds.

Step-by-step fix order

  1. Force close and reopen the app. Takes five seconds and clears temporary rendering glitches.
  2. Check if others can see it. Ask a friend or check from a second account. This tells you whether it's your device or the cover itself.
  3. Clear Instagram's cache. On Android: Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage > Clear Cache. On iPhone there's no direct cache clear, so you'll need to offload the app via Settings > General > iPhone Storage, which removes the app but keeps your login and data.
  4. Update the app. Check your app store for a pending Instagram update; version mismatches cause more cover bugs than people realise.
  5. Switch networks. Move from wifi to mobile data or vice versa and reload the profile.
  6. Re-upload the cover. Edit the highlight, remove the existing cover, and add a fresh image saved at 161 by 161 pixels, which is Instagram's native cover size. Oversized or oddly cropped images are a common silent cause of failed loads.
  7. Delete and rebuild the highlight. If nothing else works, create a new highlight with the same stories and a freshly uploaded cover, then delete the broken one.

The uncomfortable bit nobody wants to say

A lot of highlight cover problems trace back to the fact that people design covers in Canva at 1080 by 1080, export as a PNG with transparency, and expect Instagram to handle the resize gracefully. It often doesn't. The platform was never built to prioritise perfect rendering of small circular crops, because highlight covers are a cosmetic layer, not core functionality, and Meta's engineering priorities sit elsewhere. If you're relying on highlights as a navigation system for your bio link traffic or your highlight setup for a small business, you're building on a feature Instagram treats as secondary. That's fine, just don't be surprised when it glitches more than your feed does.

When it's not a loading problem

Sometimes what looks like a loading failure is a privacy or visibility issue. If your account was recently made private, or if the person checking is blocked or restricted, highlight covers and the stories inside them simply won't render for that viewer, with no error message explaining why. This is similar to the confusion people have around reposted content disappearing from a profile. It's not broken, it's a permission wall dressed up as a bug.

Also worth checking: if you recently changed your username or merged accounts, old highlight covers can point to a cached version of your profile that no longer exists at that URL, which is a separate issue from the one covered in pieces about tracking who clicked your bio link, but it comes from the same root cause: Instagram's caching layer being slower to update than the rest of the app.

For businesses relying on highlights as a shopfront

If you're using highlights as your main navigation, FAQs, Reviews, Shop, Book Now, treat cover reliability the same way you'd treat a broken link on your website: fix it fast, because every hour it sits broken is an hour of lost trust from someone browsing your profile. I've seen small business owners spend more time perfecting fonts using tricks like those in guides on changing Instagram fonts than they spend checking whether their core highlights render for new visitors. Check your own profile from a logged-out browser or a second device at least once a month. It takes two minutes and catches problems before a customer does.

If this kind of small technical fault is part of a bigger pattern on your account, things loading slowly, reach dropping, features behaving inconsistently, it's worth getting a real audit rather than guessing. An AI consultant for small business can look at your whole stack, not just the Instagram symptom in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my highlight cover show a blank circle instead of my image?

This is almost always a local caching issue on the viewer's device or app version mismatch, not a problem with your account. Clear the app cache or offload and reinstall the app, then check again.

Can other people see my highlight cover even if I can't?

Yes, this happens often. If someone else can see the cover fine, the fault is on your device specifically, so clear your cache and update your app rather than editing the highlight itself.

What's the correct image size for a highlight cover so it doesn't fail to load?

Instagram renders highlight covers at 161 by 161 pixels. Uploading oversized or transparent PNG files increases the chance of loading glitches, so export covers as a simple square JPEG at that size.

Should I delete and recreate a highlight if the cover won't load?

Only after trying app cache clearing, updating, and network switching first. If those all fail, rebuilding the highlight with a freshly uploaded cover resolves it in almost every remaining case.
