No, Instagram doesn't notify anyone when you screenshot a feed post, a Reel, a story, a highlight, a profile or a normal DM chat. Yes, it does tell the other person when you screenshot a disappearing photo or video sent in a DM, or anything in a vanish mode chat.
So the rule is simple once you see it: anything that's built to vanish comes with a warning, and everything else doesn't. If a photo was sent to you as "view once" or "allow replay", treat it as if the sender will know. If it's sitting on someone's profile or in a regular chat, they won't get an alert.
Every screenshot case, one by one
Here's the full list of places people screenshot on Instagram, and whether the other person finds out.
| What you screenshot | Does Instagram tell them? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A feed post (photo or carousel) | No | Nothing is sent, whether the account is public or private. |
| A Reel | No | Same as feed posts. No alert of any kind. |
| A story | No | They can see you viewed it, but not that you took a screenshot. |
| A highlight | No | Highlights are saved stories, so the same rule applies. |
| A profile page | No | Your view of their bio, grid or follower count isn't reported. |
| A regular DM chat | No | Normal messages, photos and videos that stay in the chat send no alert. |
| A disappearing photo or video in a DM (view once or allow replay) | Yes | The sender is told in the chat that you took a screenshot. |
| A vanish mode chat | Yes | The other person is told inside the chat. |
Instagram has tested screenshot alerts for stories in the past, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from. It isn't a feature now. App features do change, though, so if you're unsure, check Instagram's Help Center for the latest wording.
If you want the profile case on its own, I've covered it in more detail here: does Instagram notify when you screenshot a profile.
The catch: screen recording gets flagged too
This is the part people don't expect. The warning on disappearing DM photos and videos covers screen recording as well as screenshots. So switching to your phone's screen recorder instead of pressing the screenshot buttons won't hide it. The sender still gets the same kind of marker.
The same idea applies to vanish mode. If a chat is set to disappear, Instagram assumes the person wants it gone, and it tells them when someone tries to keep a copy.
What about screen recording everything else?
For posts, Reels, stories, highlights and profiles, screen recording works like screenshotting: no alert is sent. The same goes for recording a regular DM chat.
There's one practical difference worth knowing. Some apps and phones block screenshots or recordings of certain protected content, like some paid video or banking screens. That's your phone or the other app stepping in, not Instagram sending a notification.
A word on "secret screenshot" apps
You'll find apps and websites that promise to let you screenshot disappearing Instagram photos without the sender knowing. Don't use them. To work at all, they ask you to log in with your Instagram username and password, and that hands your account to a stranger. At best they break Instagram's rules and can get your account restricted. At worst they take over the account or use it to send spam.
If an app asks for your Instagram password, that's the answer to whether you should trust it.

How it compares with other apps
Instagram isn't the only app with its own screenshot rules, and they don't all match. A quick look at the two people ask about most:
- WhatsApp: view once photos and videos are handled differently again. Here's my guide on whether WhatsApp notifies when you screenshot a view once photo.
- Facebook: stories on Facebook have their own rules too. I've explained them in does Facebook notify when you screenshot a story.
- Snapchat: known for telling people about screenshots in chats and stories, which is why many people assume Instagram does the same. It mostly doesn't.
Respect first: when a screenshot isn't okay
Just because Instagram won't tell someone doesn't mean they'd be happy about it. A screenshot of a public post is usually harmless, like saving a recipe or an outfit idea. A screenshot of a private message is different.
- Ask before you share private messages. Passing someone's DMs to a group chat can hurt people and break trust, even when it feels like a joke.
- Disappearing photos were sent that way for a reason. If someone chose view once, they didn't want a copy kept. Respect that.
- Never share intimate images of anyone. In many countries sharing them without consent is a crime, and it causes real harm.
- Keeping evidence is a fair reason. If someone is threatening or harassing you, screenshotting their messages to report them is sensible. Report the account in the app as well.
And if you're on the receiving end and someone screenshots your disappearing photo, you'll see the marker in the chat. If that bothers you, you can unsend the message, stop sending disappearing media to that person, or restrict or block them.
If you're the sender: how to protect your own photos
The screenshot alert is a heads-up, not a lock. It tells you after the fact, and it can't stop anyone. Someone can also point a second phone at their screen and take a photo, and Instagram has no way of knowing. So the safest approach is to think before you send.
- Use Close Friends for personal stories. Share everyday family or home moments with a short list of people you trust, not everyone who follows you.
- Keep your account private if you post personal things. It limits who sees your posts and stories in the first place.
- Only send disappearing media to people you trust. View once reduces the risk of a copy, it doesn't remove it.
- Never send anything you'd hate to see shared. That's the only protection that works every time.
My advice
If it were me, I'd work on one simple rule: screenshot public posts freely if they're for your own reference, never screenshot disappearing messages unless it's to report abuse, and ask before you share anyone's private chat. That keeps you on the right side of both Instagram's alerts and your friendships.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
No. Instagram doesn't tell people when you screenshot their story. They can see that you viewed it, but not that you took a screenshot.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?
Not for normal messages that stay in the chat. It does notify the sender when you screenshot a disappearing photo or video, and when you screenshot a vanish mode chat.
Does screen recording on Instagram send a notification?
Only in the same places screenshots do. Screen recording a disappearing DM photo or video, or a vanish mode chat, is flagged to the other person. Recording posts, Reels, stories or profiles isn't.
Can I screenshot a disappearing Instagram photo without them knowing?
Not with Instagram itself, and apps that claim to do it ask for your login, which puts your account at risk. If someone sent it as view once, the kind thing is to leave it.
