How Old Do You Have to Be to Have TikTok? Every Age Gate

You have to be at least 13 to have a TikTok account, and older in some places. But 13 is only the first gate: direct messages start at 16, and going LIVE, receiving gifts and using any monetization features all need you to be 18.

TikTok publishes a clear ladder of age rules, and it enforces them feature by feature. That's why a 15 year old and a 17 year old can see two quite different versions of the same app. Here's the full ladder, taken from TikTok's own safety and support pages.

The minimum age to join

TikTok's community guidelines say you must be at least 13 years old to have an account, though some places have different age restrictions. In the US, younger children get a separate, limited TikTok experience with extra safety features and its own privacy policy. If TikTok finds that someone is too young for a normal account, it bans that account.

What a 13 to 15 year old can't do

This is the part most parents never see written down. TikTok's teen safety page lists the extra safeguards for 13 to 15 year olds:

  • Videos they post aren't eligible for the For You feed, so they won't be pushed to strangers.
  • No direct messaging at all.
  • Nobody can Duet or Stitch their videos.
  • Downloading their videos is switched off, and it stays off even if the account is made public.
  • Comments can't be opened up to Everyone, even on a public account.
  • Push notifications stop from 9pm.

Every teen account under 18 also starts private, with a default daily screen time of 60 minutes, and 16 and 17 year olds have push notifications switched off from 10pm.

The creator ages: LIVE and monetization

If you're asking because you want to start creating, the important number is 18. TikTok says you must be 18 and older to go LIVE and to send gifts during a LIVE, and 18 and older to use monetization features. Its LIVE safety guide adds a second condition: your account also needs a certain number of followers to go LIVE, and that number may vary by market. So reaching 18 is necessary but not enough on its own.

If TikTok thinks you're too young

TikTok can remove age-restricted features when it believes you don't meet the minimum age, rather than banning the whole account. Its support page lists livestreaming and direct messages among the features it can take away. If that happens to you by mistake, you have 180 days from the date access was removed to submit an appeal, and you get a notification the next time you open the app explaining the change.

What parents can control

  1. Set up Family Pairing so the teen's account links to yours.
  2. Choose private or public for the account; TikTok lets parents decide this.
  3. Set the daily screen time and use the dashboard to see how the time is spent.
  4. For teens aged 16 or over, restrict who, if anyone, can send them messages.
  5. Add keyword filters to keep certain topics out of their For You feed.

My verdict

TikTok's teen settings are some of the strictest on any big app, and they only work if the birthday on the account is real. If you're a parent, use the real date and turn on Family Pairing. If you're a young creator, plan on 18 for LIVE and monetization and use the years before that to build a body of work; learning to edit a video on your iPhone well is a good place to start. And if your teen is on Snapchat too, it's worth knowing how to check a Snapchat friends list as part of the same conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child under 13 have TikTok?

Not a standard account. TikTok's minimum age is 13; in the US, younger children get a separate limited experience, and TikTok bans standard accounts it finds belonging to someone too young.

What age can you go LIVE on TikTok?

18. TikTok's community guidelines say you must be 18 and older to go LIVE, and its LIVE safety guide adds that you also need a certain number of followers, which varies by market.

What age can you message on TikTok?

16. Direct messaging isn't available to 13 to 15 year olds at all.

Why can't my teen's videos get on the For You feed?

Content created by anyone under 16 isn't eligible for the For You feed, according to TikTok's teen safety page.

Can I appeal if TikTok removes a feature because of my age?

Yes. You have 180 days from the date access was removed to submit an appeal, starting from the notification in the app.
