If YouTube isn't working on Firefox, update Firefox, close extra tabs and restart the browser, then try a private window with add-ons turned off, since an extension is the usual culprit. YouTube lists Firefox as a supported browser, but older Windows or Mac versions lose its high-quality video formats.
YouTube officially supports Firefox, so when videos won't load, play black, or the page looks broken, it's rarely Firefox itself. It's usually an add-on, an out-of-date browser, a tracking protection setting blocking part of the page, or a slow connection. Here's how to narrow it down quickly, using YouTube's own requirements as the baseline.
Is Firefox supported by YouTube?
Yes. YouTube's system requirements list the newest version of Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. The catch is the word newest: an old Firefox may load the page but fail on video. YouTube also notes that some browser and system combinations can't use its high-quality video formats. For Firefox, those formats need Windows 7 or newer, or Mac OS X 10.10 or newer.
Fix YouTube on Firefox in this order
- Update Firefox. Open the menu, then Help, then About Firefox, and let it update and restart.
- Close other tabs. YouTube suggests closing most tabs except the one you're using for YouTube.
- Restart Firefox, then your computer. Both are on YouTube's own list of fixes.
- Try a private window. Private windows usually run without your add-ons, so if YouTube works there, an extension is to blame.
- Turn off add-ons one by one. Ad blockers, video downloaders and privacy tools are the most common causes.
- Clear YouTube's cookies and cache for the site, then sign in again.
Check your connection speed
If videos buffer or stay blurry, the browser may be fine and the connection slow. YouTube gives these recommended sustained speeds:
| Video quality | Recommended speed |
|---|---|
| 4K UHD | 20 Mbps |
| HD 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| HD 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| SD 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| SD 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
For movies, shows and live streams, YouTube asks for at least 1 Mbps and suggests closing other tabs and programs, and using a wired connection rather than Wi-Fi where you can.
Why quality options are missing in Firefox
If the quality menu only offers one or two choices, YouTube says some browsers don't support its newer video formats. On an older Mac or Windows version, Firefox may be limited to fewer formats. The fix is to update the operating system if you can, or watch on a newer device. Also bear in mind that YouTube says not every quality is available straight away on newly uploaded videos.
Black screen or no sound in Firefox
- Check the tab isn't muted (look for a speaker icon on the tab).
- Turn off hardware acceleration in Firefox settings if videos show black but play sound, then restart Firefox.
- Check Firefox's tracking protection isn't blocking parts of YouTube; try turning it off for the site to test.
- Make sure your computer's sound output is the right device.
Firefox on an older computer
If your computer is running an old version of Windows or macOS, there's a limit to what any update to Firefox can do. YouTube says Firefox only supports its high-quality video formats on Windows 7 or newer and Mac OS X 10.10 or newer, and its general requirements ask for the newest browser version. On a machine that can't run the latest Firefox, expect fewer quality options and more errors over time. That's the point where watching on a phone, tablet or TV app makes more sense than fighting the browser.
Signed in, but YouTube still acts strangely
Sometimes YouTube loads but recommendations, history or comments behave oddly in Firefox. Signing out of YouTube, clearing the site's cookies, and signing back in usually resets things. If you use Firefox containers or strict privacy settings that separate sites, YouTube may treat you as signed out in some tabs, which can look like a fault when it's really a setting.
Does YouTube work better in Chrome?
YouTube's troubleshooting page does suggest using Google Chrome as one of its fixes for playback errors. That's useful as a test: if a video plays in Chrome but not Firefox on the same computer, you know the problem is your Firefox set-up, almost always an add-on or setting. If it fails in both, look at your connection or computer instead. YouTube's last suggestion is to try a different supported device altogether.
For general playback problems across devices, my guide to YouTube videos not playing goes wider, and if the page loads but pictures don't, see YouTube thumbnails not loading.

My verdict
Update Firefox, close extra tabs, and test in a private window. If YouTube works there, switch your add-ons back on one at a time until you find the one breaking it. Firefox is fully supported by YouTube, so a stubborn problem almost always comes from something added on top of it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is YouTube not working on Firefox?
Usually an out-of-date Firefox, an add-on such as an ad blocker, a blocked page element, or a slow connection.
Does YouTube support Firefox?
Yes. YouTube lists the newest version of Chrome, Firefox or Safari in its system requirements.
Why is YouTube black in Firefox?
Try turning off hardware acceleration, disabling add-ons, and checking the tab isn't muted, then restart Firefox.
Why can't I choose 1080p on YouTube in Firefox?
YouTube says some browser and system combinations don't support its high-quality formats. Firefox needs Windows 7 or newer, or Mac OS X 10.10 or newer.
What internet speed does YouTube need?
YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K, and at least 500 Kbps to watch at all.
Does a private window fix YouTube in Firefox?
It's a test. Private windows usually run without add-ons, so if YouTube works there, an extension is causing the problem.
Should I switch to Chrome for YouTube?
Test in Chrome to find the cause. If it works there, fix your Firefox add-ons or settings rather than switching for good.
