Venmo is free for the everyday stuff: paying friends from your balance, debit card or bank, receiving personal payments and standard transfers to your bank. You pay when you want speed or use credit: an Instant Transfer costs 1.75% (minimum 0.25 dollar, maximum 25 dollars) and paying with a credit card costs 3%.
Venmo's fee page is long because it covers the app, the debit card, checks, crypto and a credit card. Most people only ever touch four or five of those lines, so I've pulled out the ones that matter and put the small print in plain English.
The Venmo fees most people meet
| What you're doing | Fee |
|---|---|
| Paying a friend from your balance, debit card or bank | Free |
| Paying a friend with a credit card | 3.00% |
| Receiving a personal payment | Free |
| Receiving a payment tagged as goods and services (personal account) | 2.99% |
| Receiving into a business profile | 1.9% + 0.10 dollar (2.29% + 0.09 dollar via Tap to Pay) |
| Standard transfer to your bank | Free, typically 1-3 business days |
| Instant Transfer to bank or debit card | 1.75%, min 0.25 dollar, max 25 dollars |
| Paying a PayPal user outside the U.S. | 5.00% (min 0.99, max 4.99 dollars), plus 3.00% on a credit card |
The instant transfer fee, worked through
The 1.75% is taken from the amount you move, so you receive slightly less, not pay extra on top. Move 100 dollars instantly and the fee is 1.75 dollars. Move 1,000 dollars and it's 17.50 dollars. Because the fee tops out at 25 dollars, it stops growing once you pass a certain size, which is why large instant transfers cost proportionally less.
Two tips Venmo's help pages point to. You can't send an instant transfer below 0.25 dollar, and a standard transfer is free anyway. And after you start a standard transfer, there's a one-hour window in the app to cancel it or switch to instant if you suddenly need the money faster.
The fee sellers don't see coming
When a buyer tags a payment as goods and services, it gets Venmo's purchase protection, and you as the seller pay a 2.99% seller fee, even on a personal account. That's fair for the protection, but price it in. Sell an item for 100 dollars and you'll receive less than 100 dollars once the fee comes off. If you sell regularly, a business profile has a lower rate of 1.9% plus 0.10 dollar.
Checks, cash and the debit card
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Cash a payroll or government check in minutes | 2.00% (min 6 dollars) |
| Cash any other accepted check in minutes | 5.00% (min 6 dollars) |
| Add cash at a store with the debit card | 3.74 dollars |
| ATM withdrawal in the MoneyPass network | Free |
| ATM withdrawal outside the network | 2.50 dollars, plus any ATM owner fee |
Venmo doesn't charge for a check it can't add, which is a small but nice touch. The 6 dollar minimum matters for small checks: on a modest check it's a big slice.
New: a foreign fee on the Venmo Debit Card
This one's fresh. Venmo says that beginning November 4, 2026 there's a 2.50% foreign transaction fee when you use the Venmo Debit Card to buy things or withdraw cash outside the U.S., and it applies even when there's no currency conversion. If you travel, check which card in your wallet is cheapest abroad before you go.
How to avoid most Venmo fees
- Pay friends from your Venmo balance, debit card or bank, never a credit card.
- Use standard transfers unless you need the money within the hour.
- If you sell often, set up a business profile for the lower rate.
- Batch small cash-outs into one standard transfer instead of several instant ones.
- Use a different card for spending abroad from November 4, 2026.
Venmo fees compared with paying by bank
The useful way to think about Venmo's fees is that the core service is free and you're charged for three extras: speed, credit and protection. Speed is the instant transfer. Credit is the 3% when a credit card funds a payment. Protection is the 2.99% seller fee when a buyer tags a payment as goods and services. If none of those three apply, Venmo costs you nothing, which is why it's popular for splitting bills and paying back friends.
It also helps to know what isn't charged. There's no fee to set up an account, no monthly fee, no fee for online purchases, no fee to receive a merchant refund and no fee for money added through direct deposit. Calling customer service, live agent or automated, is free too, and so are your CSV account statements. When people tell me Venmo is full of hidden charges, it's usually because they cashed out instantly every time without noticing the 1.75%.

Fees when you pay PayPal users abroad
Venmo can now send money to PayPal users in many countries. Inside the U.S. that's free from your balance, debit card or bank. Abroad, it's 5.00% with a minimum of 0.99 dollar and a maximum of 4.99 dollars, plus 3.00% if a credit card pays for it. And if the person receives a different currency, Venmo's conversion includes a spread of 4.00%, shown before you confirm.
My verdict
Venmo is cheap if you use it the way it was built: personal payments, funded from a bank or balance, cashed out slowly. The fees that add up are speed (instant transfers), credit cards and selling. Know those three and you'll rarely pay anything. If you sell or invoice, compare with what card processing really costs and Stripe vs PayPal, and for a straight app comparison see PayPal vs Venmo.
