You can only cancel a Venmo payment while it's pending to someone who hasn't set up or verified Venmo: open the Me tab, find the payment and tap Take Back. Once a payment has reached the person's Venmo account it can't be cancelled, so your option then is to ask them to send it back.
That sinking feeling when you hit Pay and spot the wrong name. The first thing to know is that Venmo moves money instantly, so the cancel button most people are looking for doesn't exist for completed payments. What you can do depends on the status you see.
First, check the payment status
| What you see | Can you cancel? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending: recipient hasn't claimed it | Yes | Tap Take Back on the Me tab |
| Pending with an estimated completion date (bank processing) | Only through your bank | Contact your bank, or wait 3-5 business days |
| Completed, sent to someone you know | No | Send them a charge request for the same amount |
| Completed, sent to a stranger | No | Contact Venmo Support with the details |
| Standard transfer to your bank, under an hour old | Yes | Tap Cancel it on the pending transfer |
How to take back a pending payment
- Open the Venmo app and go to the Me tab.
- Find the payment at the top of your transactions feed.
- Tap Take Back under the payment.
- Check where the money is going back to (balance, bank or card).
This only works when the phone number or email you paid isn't linked to an active Venmo account. If you leave it, an unclaimed payment expires after 30 days and goes back to you on its own. Money returned to your balance shows up straight away; to a bank it can take up to 5 business days, and to a card up to 7.
If you paid someone you know by mistake
Venmo's advice is simple and it works: send that person a charge request for the same amount, with a short note explaining the mistake. When they accept, the money comes back. Don't open a dispute for this; Venmo says a dispute won't fix a payment sent to the wrong person.
If you paid a stranger
Contact Venmo Support in the app: Me, then Settings, Get Help and Chat With Us, and ask for an agent. Have these ready:
- The username of the person you paid
- The amount and the date
- The username, phone number and email of the person you meant to pay
Venmo says it'll do its best to help, which is honest: it can't promise the money back once it's in someone else's account. Move quickly, though. The sooner you report it, the better your chances.
The bank trick that backfires
This is the catch people learn the hard way. You might think you can call your bank and stop the payment. Venmo says that's only appropriate for payments still showing as Pending with an estimated completion date. If you ask your bank to reverse a payment that's already Completed, it creates a loss on your Venmo account, and you'll have to pay that back. Your account can be frozen until you do.
If a stranger sends you money
Flip side, and a common scam set-up: someone sends you money "by mistake" and asks you to send it back. Venmo says don't pay them back yourself; contact Support so they can return it through the right channel. Sending it back yourself can leave you out of pocket if the original payment later fails.
Cancel a split or a request instead
Not every mistake is a payment. If you sent a request or split a bill with the wrong amount, you can cancel that request from the Me tab before the other person pays it, and send a new one with the right figure. That's far easier than unpicking a completed payment, so it's worth checking whether you charged or paid before you panic.
How to avoid paying the wrong person
- Search by username and check the profile photo and full name before you tap Pay.
- For a new person, send a small amount first and ask them to confirm.
- Use the QR code on their phone when you're together, instead of typing a username.
- Keep payments to strangers off Venmo; it's built for people you know.
Most wrong-person payments come from similar usernames. Two people called Sam with one letter different, or an old account a friend no longer uses. Thirty seconds of checking saves a lot of chasing.

My verdict
Treat every Venmo payment like handing over cash. Double-check the name and photo before you pay, and use Take Back the moment you spot a mistake on a pending payment. For a wider look at the risks of payment apps, see how the money flipping scam works and PayPal vs Venmo.
Frequently asked questions
Can you cancel a Venmo payment after it's sent?
Only if it's pending to someone who hasn't claimed it. Venmo says there isn't a way to cancel a payment once it's reached the recipient.
How do I take back a Venmo payment?
Go to the Me tab, find the pending payment and tap Take Back. It only works if the phone or email you paid isn't linked to an active Venmo account.
What happens if no one claims my Venmo payment?
Venmo says unclaimed payments expire after 30 days and the money goes back to your payment method.
Can my bank reverse a Venmo payment?
Only for payments still pending with an estimated completion date. Stopping a completed payment through your bank creates a loss on your Venmo account that you must repay.

Venmo says money returned to your Venmo balance shows straight away, to a bank account in up to 5 business days, and to a credit or debit card in up to 7 business days.
Can I cancel a Venmo transfer to my bank?
A standard transfer can be cancelled within one hour of starting it, in the app. After that, or for instant transfers, it goes ahead.
Should I open a dispute if I paid the wrong person?
No. Venmo says a dispute won't fix it. Ask the person to return it via a charge request, or contact Support if it was a stranger.
