A good CapCut tutorial starts with the timeline: import a clip, select it, then use the toolbar for Text, Audio, Speed and Effects before you export. CapCut's own help says auto captions work best with background music removed first. My step-by-step CapCut guides for each task are listed below.
I get asked about CapCut more than almost any other editing app, usually by small business owners who want a decent Reel without hiring an editor. The good news is that most CapCut jobs follow the same pattern: select a clip on the timeline, pick a tool, adjust it and export. Here's how the editor fits together, using what CapCut's own help pages say, and then every CapCut guide I've written, grouped in one place.
How the CapCut editor is laid out on phone, desktop and web
CapCut comes in three flavours: the mobile app, the desktop app for Windows and Mac, and CapCut Online in the browser. The tools are broadly the same, but the labels and positions move around, which is a common reason people get stuck following a tutorial written for a different version.
On the mobile app you'll usually tap New project, add your footage, then tap a clip in the timeline to bring up the bottom toolbar. On desktop you click Import, drag the clip onto the timeline, and most settings appear in the panel on the right. Online, the left sidebar holds media and elements, and a Smart tools area on the right holds features like background removal.
CapCut's own pages even use different names for the same control. Its speed guide says mobile shows Normal and Curve, while desktop shows Standard and Curve. So if a menu name doesn't match what you see, look for the nearest equivalent rather than assuming the feature's missing.
| Task | Phone app | Desktop app |
|---|---|---|
| Add captions | Text, then Auto Captions | Text, Auto Captions, then Recognize |
| Change speed | Tap the clip, then Speed (Normal or Curve) | Select the clip, then Speed (Standard or Curve) |
| Remove a background | Edit, then Remove BG | Video, then Remove BG in the right panel |
| Add a transition | Tap the small square between clips | Transitions tab, then drag between clips |
CapCut captions, text and layers: what the help centre warns about
Auto captions are the feature I'd learn first, because silent scrolling is how most people watch short video. CapCut's help centre gives the desktop route as Text, then Auto Captions, choose the language and audio track, and click Recognize. You can then double-click a caption block to fix any words.
Here's the bit most tutorials skip. CapCut says speech recognition can misinterpret words because of background noise, accents, fast speech or low audio quality, and it recommends removing background music or effects before you generate captions if you can. So add your captions on the clean voice track first, then lay the music in afterwards. CapCut's web guide also says AI captions on the web need a video shorter than 20 minutes, so long recordings are better handled in the desktop app.
Text that won't show up is usually a layer problem. CapCut's help says text can be hidden, transparent, too small or covered by other layers, and suggests moving the text layer above any picture-in-picture or sticker layers. Think of the timeline as a stack: whatever sits higher appears on top.
Speed, zoom and aspect ratio settings in CapCut
Speed is where CapCut gives you the widest range. Its guide says you can set speed from 0.1x for super slow motion up to 100x, and that Curve lets you ramp speed up and down smoothly within one clip rather than changing it evenly.
Zooming in is done with keyframes or a zoom effect, and CapCut is honest about the downside: low-resolution footage can look pixelated when you zoom, so start with the highest resolution you've got. The same rule applies to cropping, because you're throwing away part of the frame.
Aspect ratio is the setting that decides whether your video fits the platform. CapCut's video resizer lists presets including 1:1, 9:16 and 16:9, and output resolutions of 720p, 1080p, 2K and 4K. As a rule of thumb, I'd pick the ratio before you start editing, not after, so your text and captions land in the right place for vertical or horizontal viewing.
CapCut music rights, account age and backups
This is the part that catches business accounts out. CapCut's Materials License Agreement says its Sounds are made available for video content that's only for personal entertainment and non-commercial purposes, with a separate set of commercial sounds. CapCut's own help on silent TikTok uploads says to check a track shows Commercial use allowed before you export. If you're posting for a business, that check isn't optional.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
CapCut's help also says licensed music is temporary and can disappear because of licensing restrictions, platform limits or account syncing issues. That's another reason to keep your own copy of finished videos.
Two account rules are worth knowing. CapCut's Terms of Service say the service is only intended for people aged 13 and older, and that once you delete your account you won't be able to reactivate it or retrieve your data. The terms also say you should always back up your content, so export anything you care about before you change or close an account.
A quick CapCut checklist before you export
- Pick the aspect ratio first, using CapCut's presets such as 9:16 for vertical video.
- Generate auto captions on the clean voice track before adding music, as CapCut's help recommends.
- Read through the captions and fix any misheard words by double-clicking the caption block.
- Check your text layers sit above stickers and overlays so nothing is hidden.
- For business posts, confirm each track shows Commercial use allowed.
- Make sure transitions sit between two clips with no gap, because CapCut says a gap stops the transition icon appearing.
- Export at the highest resolution your footage supports, then keep a backup copy outside CapCut.

Where I'd start with CapCut
If you're brand new, start with captions and aspect ratio, because those two decide whether your video gets watched at all. Then learn speed and transitions to make it feel polished. And whatever you post for a business, don't skip the music licence check. It's the one CapCut mistake that can quietly mute a video you've spent hours on.
