On Messenger, Restrict is a quiet privacy setting: the person's chat leaves your Chats list, their messages stop notifying you, and they can't see when you're online or whether you've opened their messages. Messenger doesn't tell them, and it's softer than blocking, which stops contact.
You may have spotted the word Restrict in the menu when you pressed and held a chat, and wondered whether it's a softer version of block. It is, in a way, but it works differently enough that it's worth understanding before you use it. This matters if you run a business page or work with the public, because restricting is often the calmest way to deal with a difficult contact without starting a fight.
What Restrict means on Messenger in one minute
Restrict is a privacy and comfort setting that quietly puts distance between you and one person. Messenger's help pages list exactly what happens when you restrict someone:
- You won't get notifications when they message you, and your phone won't ring when they call you.
- You won't be able to call or message them.
- You won't see your conversation with them in your Chats list.
- Messenger won't tell them that you restricted them.
- They won't be able to see when you're online or whether you've opened their messages, and you won't see when they're online.
- Messenger will let you know if you're about to enter a group chat with someone you restricted.
In short, they're pushed out of your daily view without a confrontation. That's the whole idea behind the feature.
What Restrict doesn't do on Messenger
It's easy to assume restricting is the same as blocking. It isn't, and Messenger's help pages draw the line. Blocking a profile on Messenger also blocks the profile on Facebook, so the person can't message, call or find your profile on Messenger or Facebook chat. Restricting doesn't do any of that. It's a set of quiet changes on your side rather than a wall. Nothing in the restrict help says the person's profile is hidden from you, or that your Facebook friendship changes.
Nothing in the restrict help mentions deleting your messages either. The conversation just stops appearing in your Chats list, which is why you restrict from a conversation you can still see and then manage the people you've restricted from your settings.
How to restrict someone on Messenger for Android
- From Chats, tap and hold your conversation with the person.
- Tap Restrict.
How to restrict someone on Messenger for iPhone
There are two routes in Messenger's help pages. Pick whichever is nearer.
From inside the chat
- Open the conversation from Chats.
- Tap the person's name at the top.
- Tap Restrict.
From your Chats list
- Tap Chats to see your conversations.
- Swipe left on the conversation.
- Tap More, then tap Restrict.
The help centre says this feature isn't available on computers, only in the Messenger apps. If your phone's menu looks slightly different, that's normal. Menus vary by app version.
How to see and undo your restricted list on Messenger
Restricting is easy to reverse. Messenger's help gives the same steps for Android and iPhone:
- Tap Menu, then tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy & safety.
- Tap Restricted accounts.
- Tap the person you want to unrestrict. You'll be taken to your chat with them.
- At the bottom of the chat, tap Unrestrict.
You can also tap Add at the corner of that settings screen to restrict more people without finding their chat first. That list is handy if you restricted someone months ago and can't remember who is on it.
Restrict, mute or block on Messenger: which suits you?
| Setting | Best when | Main effect according to Messenger's help |
|---|---|---|
| Mute | You like the person but not the noise | Turns off notification alerts for the chat |
| Restrict | You want distance without a confrontation | Chat leaves your Chats list; they aren't told; online and read status hidden from them |
| Block | You want no contact at all | They can't message, call or find your profile |
The help centre itself points out that you can always block a profile or turn off conversation notifications if restricting isn't quite right. If the noise is your only problem, muting is lighter, and I explain it in my guide to muting someone on Messenger.
When restricting someone on Messenger makes sense
Restriction is best for the in-between moments. Think of a former colleague who still messages at odd hours, a customer who argues in your inbox, or an acquaintance who keeps asking for favours. You don't want a public falling-out, and you don't need the conversation to be gone for good. Restricting keeps your phone quiet, hides your activity from them and leaves the door open if the situation improves.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you're managing a business and a conversation is a record you might need, keep in mind that a restricted chat leaves your Chats list. You can still reach it through your restricted accounts list, so don't delete anything you may need later.
What restricting doesn't solve on Messenger
Restrict is not a safety tool for serious problems. If someone is threatening or harassing you, restricting alone isn't enough. Block them, report the message or conversation inside Messenger, and if you're in danger, contact the police. Restricting hides things from you; it doesn't stop someone from sending them.
Finally, if you're curious about the opposite question, whether someone has restricted you, the short answer is that Messenger's help says the restricted person isn't told, so there's no official notice for them either. I've covered the signs people look for, and why they prove very little, in a separate guide. If you want to start fresh with your chat list, my explanation of how to archive chats on Messenger shows another way to tidy things up.

Frequently asked questions
What does restrict mean on Messenger?
It's a setting that removes someone's chat from your Chats list, stops their notifications and hides your online and read status from them, without telling them.
Does Messenger tell someone when you restrict them?
No. Messenger's help pages say they won't tell the person you restricted them.
Can a restricted person still message me?
Messenger's help says you won't get notifications when they message you. The help doesn't describe stopping them from sending messages, which is what blocking is for.
How do I unrestrict someone on Messenger?
Go to Menu, Settings, Privacy & safety, then Restricted accounts. Tap the person, then tap Unrestrict at the bottom of the chat.
Is restrict the same as block on Messenger?
No. Blocking stops them messaging, calling or finding your profile. Restricting only changes what you see and what they can see of your activity.
