Nigerian creators can be paid by Patreon through a bank transfer in naira. Patreon's payout guide lists Nigeria with the currency NGN, but its PayPal article doesn't name Nigeria. The catch is cost and form-filling: the conversion from US dollars takes 0.25 US dollars plus 1.55% per payout, and every non-US creator must complete a W-8BEN.
If you're a Nigerian writer, artist, podcaster or teacher thinking about Patreon, you probably want three answers before you set anything up. Can I be paid in naira? Do I need PayPal? What will it cost? I've gone through Patreon's help pages for exactly those points, and below I've marked clearly where its pages say nothing, because I'd rather leave a gap than guess.
What you can rely on: naira bank transfers are listed
Patreon's payout guide for creators outside the US has a table of countries where US dollar earnings can be converted and sent to a local bank. Nigeria is in it, with NGN beside the name. So the main route for you is a transfer from Patreon into a Nigerian bank account, paid in naira.
Setting it up is lighter than many people expect. Patreon says you only need your bank details, such as the account number and the name on the account, and that special characters in names aren't supported. Use letters and numbers only, and make the account name match the one you used on Patreon.
No PayPal line for Nigeria in Patreon's own list
Patreon also publishes a list of countries where payouts can go through PayPal. The Middle East and Africa section names Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal and South Africa among others. Nigeria isn't there. Patreon notes the list can differ from PayPal's own, so treat it as a signal, not a ruling.
PayPal's own Nigeria help page adds a second hurdle for receiving. It says a new customer in Nigeria should link to a partner bank to start receiving money. If you want the full picture there, my guide to PayPal in Nigeria goes through it. For Patreon, though, the simpler route is the naira bank transfer.
Why the naira transfer only appears in certain cases
There's a trap in Patreon's FAQ that catches people. It says the local bank transfer is only available if you've set your payout currency to your country's local currency and live in a supported country. If your payout currency is something else, such as US dollars outside the US, the local option won't appear and you'll see US dollar bank transfer choices instead.
Separately, when you pay out from a US dollar balance to a local bank, the cost is 0.25 US dollars plus a 1.55% conversion fee per payout, with a 10 US dollar minimum. Patreon says it doesn't apply another conversion fee on top, and that the exact rate can shift slightly depending on when the withdrawal is processed, because exchange rates move through the day.
Billing fans: why dollars are the realistic choice
Patreon's processing table for creators paid in US dollars shows 2.9% plus 0.30 US dollars for a card or Apple Pay payment. A non-US fan paying through PayPal is charged 3.9% plus 0.30 US dollars. The table for other payout currencies lists EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, DKK, NOK, SEK, CZK, HKD, HUF, NZD, PLN and SGD. NGN isn't among them.
Practically, that means Nigerian creators should expect to run tiers in US dollars. Patreon says a 2.5% conversion fee applies to member payments when your payout currency differs from the currency the fan pays in, which a US dollar payout currency avoids for fans paying in dollars. Those fans are a good fit if your audience sits mostly abroad.
W-8BEN, with no Nigeria line on the treaty list
Patreon says all creators who aren't US citizens must submit a W-8BEN, or a W-8BEN-E for companies, before they can pay out. It sits under Settings, Payouts and Taxes, in the Tax settings section. The form has a question about claiming tax treaty benefits. The IRS list of United States income tax treaties doesn't list Nigeria, so I wouldn't assume a treaty rate applies to you.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
What that means for your personal tax is a job for a Nigerian accountant. I'm not giving tax advice, only pointing out that the IRS list is where Patreon sends people to check.
Nigeria and Patreon's VAT table
Patreon collects VAT or GST on some fan payments where local rules for non-resident digital suppliers apply, and it publishes a table of those countries. The African entries are Egypt, Kenya and South Africa. There's no line for Nigeria, so the table I read doesn't show Patreon collecting VAT there. That could change, so look at the live article before you build a pricing spreadsheet.
| What I checked | What Patreon's pages say for Nigeria |
|---|---|
| Local bank transfer | Listed, with NGN as the currency |
| PayPal supported list | Nigeria isn't named |
| Payout from US dollars | 0.25 US dollars plus 1.55% per payout |
| Billing in naira | Not among the listed processing currencies |
| US treaty list | Nigeria isn't on the IRS list |
| VAT table | No Nigeria line |
Backup routes, the first-payout hold and limits
If the bank route doesn't work for you, Patreon says PayPal and Payoneer Wallet are also available payout options in countries on its bank list, and that your bank country is separate from where you live. Payoneer Wallet costs 1.00 US dollars per payout with a 25 US dollar minimum. My guides to Payoneer in Nigeria and Wise in Nigeria explain what the receiving side involves.
Add your payout details early. Patreon puts a 5-day hold on your balance whenever a payout method is added or updated. After that a payout typically arrives in 1-5 days, you can start one every 24 hours, and for most bank transfers Patreon sets no payout limit. Your own bank may still apply its limits, so ask it before your first large withdrawal.
