Twitch Notifications Not Loading? Why They Go Missing and Fixes

If Twitch notifications aren't loading, set the channel to Always instead of Personalized under Manage Channel Notifications in your Notification Settings. Twitch says Personalized can skip alerts and Smart Delivery sends each one to only one place. Also check your phone's system settings for the Twitch app and that your email is verified.

You follow a creator, they go live, and you hear nothing. Or the bell icon is empty when you know you should have an alert. For viewers that means missing a favourite stream, and for creators and small businesses using Twitch it means your community isn't being told you've started.

Twitch has a dedicated help article on missing go-live notifications, and I've followed it closely below. It also explains why Twitch deliberately doesn't send every alert everywhere, which surprises a lot of people.

Why Twitch notifications aren't loading for one channel

Twitch says the first thing to check is the setting for that specific channel. Each channel you follow has four options:

OptionWhat Twitch says it does
AlwaysGives you every notification for the channel, including go-live and catch-up
PersonalizedThe default. Sends selected alerts based on your viewing habits
Go Live OnlyTells you just when the streamer goes live
OffNo notifications for the channel

Twitch explains that Personalized curates what reaches you using your viewing history, the time of day and how many notifications you've had recently. So a missed alert may be the system working as designed. Changing the channel to Always is Twitch's fix.

Changing Twitch channel notifications on desktop

  1. Go to your Twitch Notification Settings.
  2. Open the Manage Channel Notifications section.
  3. Find the channel you're missing.
  4. Change its setting to Always.

Changing Twitch channel notifications on the mobile app

  1. Tap your display picture in the top left of the Twitch app.
  2. Tap Account Settings, then Notifications.
  3. Tap Manage Channel Notifications.
  4. Tap the channel and change its setting.

Twitch adds a shortcut: go to the channel and tap the bell icon under the video player to change its notification setting there. Menu names can shift between app versions, so follow what you see on screen.

Smart Delivery and missing Twitch notifications

This is the setting most people have never heard of. Twitch says a go-live alert can go to up to three places: a temporary alert on the site or in the app, a push notification on your phone, and email. With Smart Delivery on, Twitch picks just one based on where you're active. If you're on the site, you get an onsite alert. If you're away and have the mobile app with notifications on, you get a push. If neither applies, you get an email.

If you'd like alerts everywhere, Twitch says you can switch Smart Delivery off using the toggle in your Notification Settings. Your inbox may then fill faster, so it's a trade-off.

Checking the Live category for Twitch notifications

Twitch says that to get go-live alerts you need the Live category turned on for the notification type you want, whether that's onsite, push or email. If you've switched that category off, no amount of changing channel settings will help.

Fixing Twitch push notifications on your phone

Twitch says push and email alerts both need your permission first. For push, notifications for the Twitch app must be allowed at system level on your phone, through your device's app or notification settings. If you previously switched them off, Twitch says the app prompts you to enable them when you open Mobile Settings under Account Settings.

Verifying your email for Twitch notifications

For email alerts, Twitch says the address on your account has to be verified. To check, go to Settings and open the Security and Privacy tab, where Twitch shows whether your email is verified and lets you verify it if not.

If you're a creator and your viewers aren't getting Twitch alerts

Twitch has a direct tip for streamers: tell viewers to visit their Twitch notification settings, find your channel under Manage Channel Notifications and change Personalized to Always. A short line in your chat panel or a pinned social post can save you a lot of missed viewers.

Once people arrive, you may want to keep chat tidy. My guides to adding a mod on Twitch and blocking someone on Twitch help with that.

When Twitch notifications still aren't loading

Check each layer in turn: the channel setting, Smart Delivery, the Live category, your phone's system settings and your verified email. If all of those are right and nothing arrives, contact Twitch Support through its help centre and tell them what you've already tried.

A quick order for checking missing Twitch notifications

Here's a simple sequence, taken from the layers Twitch describes. Work down the list and stop when alerts arrive:

  1. Check the channel's setting and change Personalized to Always.
  2. Check whether Smart Delivery is sending alerts somewhere you aren't looking.
  3. Make sure the Live category is switched on for the alert type you want.
  4. Check your phone's system settings allow Twitch notifications.
  5. Confirm your email address is verified in Security and Privacy.

Twitch calls these the common reasons people miss alerts, and it says they're all things you can fix yourself.

Twitch notifications versus your Twitch notification inbox

Twitch also has a notifications inbox, which is where alerts collect on the site. If you can see a notification there but didn't get a push or an email, that points to Smart Delivery or a system setting. If it isn't in the inbox either, look at the channel setting first.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting Twitch go-live notifications?

Twitch says the channel may be set to Personalized, which skips some alerts. Change it to Always under Manage Channel Notifications in Notification Settings.

What does Twitch Smart Delivery do?

Twitch says it sends a notification to only one place, onsite, push or email, depending on where you're active. You can turn it off in Notification Settings.

How do I change Twitch channel notifications on mobile?

Tap your display picture, then Account Settings, Notifications and Manage Channel Notifications, then tap the channel. You can also use the bell icon under the video player.

Do I need a verified email for Twitch notifications?

For email notifications, yes. Twitch says the address on your account needs to be verified, which you can check in Settings under Security and Privacy.

Why don't I get Twitch push notifications?

Twitch says push alerts need notifications enabled for the Twitch app in your phone's system settings, and the Live category turned on.

What can streamers tell viewers who miss alerts?

Twitch suggests telling them to set your channel to Always under Manage Channel Notifications in their Notification Settings.
