KDP's payment options page lists Pakistan for direct deposit in PKR, with no check or wire, and the IRS treaty table shows a copyrights royalty rate of 0 for Pakistan. The catch is paperwork: you need a matching bank name, a completed tax interview and a taxpayer number before any reduced rate can apply.
Pakistani authors often tell me PayPal's limits push them to look at Amazon KDP, and the first question is whether it can pay them at all. I've read KDP's help pages on payments, bank accounts, thresholds and tax, and I've checked the IRS treaty table too. Pakistan comes out better than many people expect, though the paperwork has to be right. I'm not giving tax or legal advice, so confirm specifics locally.
Direct deposit in rupees is the listed route
KDP's payment options page lists Pakistan with direct deposit in PKR, the Pakistani rupee. Pakistan has no check and no wire entry on that table, so direct deposit is the route KDP shows.
KDP says direct deposit usually has no minimum payment threshold, and that it's the fastest, secure way to receive royalty payments. The thresholds page agrees that EFT payments have no threshold. That means a small royalty month isn't stuck waiting for a minimum.
KDP's account page also says alternative payment methods such as Amazon Payments or PayPal are not available at this time. If you're comparing options for other income, my guide to PayPal in Pakistan covers what that service allows.
What the IRS treaty table lists for Pakistan
The IRS treaty Table 1 lists Pakistan with a copyrights royalty rate of 0, under treaty article VIII(1). That's the figure the table gives for that income class, and it's the reason Pakistani authors look at treaty benefits closely.
Two cautions. The table is a US withholding table, not a statement about tax in Pakistan, so ask a local accountant how royalties are treated at home. And whether the zero rate applies to your particular book, store and royalty type depends on what you enter in the tax interview, not on what a blog post says.
Getting a taxpayer number, then the ITIN route
KDP lists three conditions for an ITIN support letter from Amazon. Your country of permanent residence has an active tax treaty with the US, you've completed the KDP tax profile, and you've received a US payment from KDP. The page adds that eligibility is subject to Amazon's requirements.
So the order matters. You complete the tax profile first, you get paid once, and only then can you ask for the support letter. If you already hold a taxpayer number issued at home, KDP says you may enter that when you don't have a US one.
Keep your W-8 current
KDP says a W-8 expires on the last day of the third succeeding calendar year after you sign it. If it lapses, the withholding rate reverts to the default. Set a calendar reminder when you submit it, and retake the interview if your name or country of residence changes.
| What I checked | What the official pages say for Pakistan |
|---|---|
| Payment method | Direct deposit |
| Payout currency | PKR |
| Check or wire | Not listed for Pakistan |
| Threshold on direct deposit | None |
| IRS table copyrights rate | 0, article VIII(1) |
| Time to arrive after payment date | 1 to 5 business days |
When the money reaches a Pakistani bank
KDP says royalties are paid every month, approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported. After that, direct deposit takes 1 to 5 business days to appear in your bank account. A sale early in a month and a sale late in the same month are paid together.
Where royalties are paid in a currency other than the sale currency, KDP says Amazon converts them at its own exchange rate, with conversion fees included. Because your payout is in rupees, expect conversion on most sales, and compare the credit with the report.

The bank account name trap
The most common reason deposits fail is a name mismatch. KDP's page says the account holder name must match your bank's records. It can't include initials at the beginning or end, and it must have at least two words. Ask your bank for the exact spelling it holds.
KDP also says it checks the account within five business days and emails you if validation fails, and it needs two-step verification to add or delete an account.
Scams around the KDP name
- KDP doesn't charge a fee to release royalties.
- Never share your banking app password or one-time codes with anyone claiming to be Amazon.
- Be careful with 'account managers' who offer to run your KDP account for a cut.
- Be careful with courses promising a fixed monthly income from low-content books.
Alternatives if KDP doesn't fit
If KDP can't pay you the way you need, other tools exist for holding foreign income. I'm not ranking them, but my guides on how Payoneer works from India and Wise in Pakistan show what those services say for South Asian users. KDP only pays by the methods on its own table, so ask its support whether any other account type is accepted.
So, does Amazon KDP work in Pakistan?
On KDP's own table it does, with direct deposit in rupees. Get the name, the tax interview and your taxpayer number right, and expect a gap of about two months between a sale and cash. Whether a book earns anything is a separate question that no payout page can answer.
