Wise's help pages say senders can pay shillings to Kenyan bank accounts or M-Pesa wallets. M-Pesa transfers are capped at 250,000 shillings each and 500,000 a day, with an annual threshold of 18,000,000. The page I read for opening a Wise balance doesn't list Kenya, and Wise says you can't top up shillings from a bank.
In Kenya, most conversations about getting paid from abroad end up at M-Pesa, so that's where I'll start. I've read Wise's guide to Kenyan shilling transfers, its M-Pesa article and the list of places where you can hold a balance. The guide is detailed, and the caps matter if you invoice for anything sizeable.
How Wise says money reaches M-Pesa
According to Wise's KES guide, you can send shillings to personal or business bank accounts, or to M-Pesa wallets, in Kenya. For M-Pesa the sender needs your full name, the mobile provider and your mobile number, which starts with country code 254. Wise's M-Pesa article is written for senders, and says the sender converts the money to shillings using the mid-market rate and a transparent fee. It doesn't give a fee figure.
The M-Pesa caps in full
| What I checked | What Wise says for Kenya |
|---|---|
| Per M-Pesa transfer | 250,000 KES |
| Per day to M-Pesa | 500,000 KES |
| Annual M-Pesa threshold | 18,000,000 KES |
| Most a wallet can hold | 1,500,000 KES |
| Bank account transfers | No maximum, unless it's to an M-Pesa wallet |
| Bank account number | 8 to 20 digits, name in English characters |
The wallet holding limit is easy to miss. If your wallet already has a large balance, a big payment may not fit. For anything near these amounts, a bank account is the route Wise describes without a cap.
When a payment goes the long way round
Wise says transfers over 1 million KES are sent as SWIFT international transfers. These usually arrive within 24 hours but can take up to 6 working days. For smaller bank transfers, Wise says money usually reaches the account the same working day after conversion, and conversion can take up to 2 working days.
So a large invoice paid to a Kenyan bank can be slower than a small one. If you've got rent or a salary due, ask the client to pay a few days early.
A small M-Pesa detail that causes confusion
Wise says any text a sender types in the reference field for an M-Pesa recipient won't be delivered. So if your client writes your invoice number there, you won't see it. Send the invoice number by email and match the payment by amount and date instead.
Can you open a Wise account if you live in Kenya?
The Wise page I read about where you can hold a balance doesn't list Kenya. Wise's M-Pesa article doesn't address whether Kenyan residents can open an account either, and tells readers to look at availability for their region. Wise's page on where you can use Wise names the places it doesn't operate, and Kenya isn't among them. The honest answer is that receiving through a sender is documented, and holding a Wise balance as a Kenyan resident is something to confirm in the app.
Why you can't top up shillings from a bank
Wise says you can send KES only if you already hold KES in your Wise account, and that you can add KES by converting another currency you hold with Wise. It also says you can't add KES to your Wise account, or send KES into it, from a bank account or other external payment method. Wise is a way for foreign money to reach Kenya, not a place to keep local cash.
Bank or M-Pesa: how I'd choose
If the payment is small and you want it on your phone straight away, M-Pesa is convenient, and Wise's caps leave plenty of room for everyday invoices. If the payment is large, or you'd rather not worry about the wallet holding limit, a bank account is the cleaner route because Wise states no maximum there.
Whichever you choose, tell your client the exact name on the account, and ask them to check the delivery estimate Wise shows before they confirm. That one habit prevents most of the awkward follow-up emails I hear about.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One more thing. Because Wise says the currency your client sends from may have its own limit, the guide's figures describe the shilling side only. A large payment from a client's own account can still be restricted at their end, so give them a little warning if the invoice is big.
Other ways Kenyans get paid from abroad
Plenty of freelancers in Nairobi and Mombasa use more than one tool. I've written about how Payoneer works in Kenya and what PayPal offers Kenyan users, and each handles withdrawals differently from Wise. For a view of another market, Wise in Pakistan shows how differently the same tool is documented there.
Please check with your bank about anything it needs for incoming foreign payments, and ask a local accountant about tax. I can't advise on either.
Before your client pays
- Decide between a bank account and M-Pesa, based on the amount.
- For M-Pesa, give your full name, provider and mobile number starting with 254.
- For a bank, give the account number and bank name, with your name in English characters.
- Keep M-Pesa payments within the per-transfer, daily and annual caps.
- Send your invoice number separately, since the M-Pesa reference won't be delivered.
