PayPal in the UAE: What Do Dirham Withdrawals Cost? (2026)

PayPal's fee page lists the UAE for dirham withdrawals to a bank, with no fee above a set threshold when no conversion is involved, and a separate card fee. PayPal says a local bank transfer may take up to 7 business days. A wallet partnership with e& money was announced but not yet live.

People in the UAE often assume PayPal will behave the way it does at home, then get surprised by a withdrawal line item or a waiting time. The country does have its own rows in PayPal's fee tables, including a dirham threshold and a card fee, and there's a wallet partnership in the pipeline that could change things. Here's what the sources say, and what they don't.

The 750 dirham line that decides your withdrawal fee

PayPal's fee page lists the United Arab Emirates for withdrawals to a bank account, with a threshold. If your dirham withdrawal is greater than 750.00 AED, there's no fee when no currency conversion is involved. If it's less than 750.00 AED, the row shows 11.00 AED.

The same row also shows 1.50%, minimum fee 15.00 US dollars, for withdrawals made in US dollars. The table doesn't explain how the lines pair up in every case, so check the figure PayPal shows you on your own withdrawal screen. PayPal adds that your bank may charge extra, so you could receive less than the full amount.

Waiting time: up to a week to a local bank

PayPal's withdrawal page says a standard transfer to your bank usually completes within one business day, but may take 3 to 5 business days depending on your bank. It then names the United Arab Emirates among the countries where a transfer to the local bank account may take up to 7 business days.

So the stated worst case is a week of business days. If you're paying rent or a supplier from a PayPal payout, build in that buffer. Instant transfers should show within minutes according to PayPal, and if nothing has arrived after 30 minutes it suggests you contact your bank.

Dirham card withdrawals

For a card, PayPal lists a fixed fee for the UAE dirham of 20.00 AED per withdrawal. PayPal's page says standard transfers to an eligible withdrawal card take about 48 hours. Since the fixed fee is the same whatever the amount, a card suits larger withdrawals better than lots of small ones.

Converting from dollars to dirhams

The UAE sits in PayPal's Middle East & Africa group for conversion rates. Converting a balance or a payment received into another currency is 3.0%, and conversions when sending payments or receiving refunds are 4.0%. If you withdraw in a currency other than your balance's currency, PayPal says conversion fees apply as well.

Most UAE freelancers and small sellers are paid in dollars or euros by overseas clients, so this line is usually the biggest one. It's worth knowing before you quote a client in a currency you'll then have to convert.

The e& money wallet plan: announced, not yet live

In 2025 e& money announced a planned partnership with PayPal. The idea is that PayPal users could link their accounts to an e& money wallet and move funds in instantly, with balances in dirhams at a fixed US dollar to dirham rate. The release says it would be available 24 hours a day.

The important detail is the wording. The release describes what will happen when the service becomes available, so it was a plan, not a live feature. It gives no fees and no launch date. Don't structure anything around it until you see it working in your own PayPal account.

Third-party providers and US bank accounts

The UAE is also listed for withdrawals through third party service providers to a bank account or wallet at 2.0% + 1.50 US dollars, and PayPal notes the provider may add fees. It's in the group with a 3.00% rate for US bank account withdrawals too. Those lines exist, but I'd compare their all-in cost with a plain dirham withdrawal before using either.

Choosing between the dirham routes

Put your usual payment through each line before you decide. A bank withdrawal under the threshold carries a small flat fee, a card withdrawal carries a larger flat fee, and the third-party route charges a percentage plus a fixed amount. The cheapest option for a small payment is rarely the cheapest for a large one, so it pays to do the sums once.

Also think about timing. A card is listed at about 48 hours, a bank at up to seven business days for the UAE. If you need the money quickly, the fee isn't the only number that matters.

Receiving: a PayPal warning worth reading

PayPal's withdrawal page says that in some countries receiving money via PayPal requires linking your account to a licensed local partner. It doesn't say what applies in the UAE, so use the options shown in your own account. For similar patterns elsewhere, how PayPal lists Egypt's fees has the same seven business day note, and the South African bank route shows a very different setup.

If a payment is stuck, why an invoice payment may show as pending on PayPal covers the usual causes. For tax questions, speak to a UAE accountant, because I can't give tax advice.
