Is TotalAV Legit? Refunds, Auto-Renewal and Fake Alerts (2026)

Yes, TotalAV is a real antivirus product sold by a company that lists a Boston business address, and its terms spell out refunds and renewals. The catch is the billing: plans renew automatically, refunds depend on cancelling the subscription first, and turning off auto-renewal alone doesn't trigger a refund.

TotalAV adverts follow you everywhere, so I understand why people stop and ask whether it's the real deal before typing in a card number. I've read through TotalAV's own terms and site pages and kept to what they say, so you can see where the company is clear and where you'll need to read the small print.

Who is behind TotalAV and how it presents itself

TotalAV's site footer lists Total Security US LLC at 250 Northern Avenue, Floor 3, Boston, MA 02210, and the copyright line names Total Security Limited. So there's a named company and a street address rather than an anonymous download page. The site also mentions that related products such as Total Adblock and Total VPN sit under the Total Security umbrella.

What the pages don't do is tell a founder story or name the people running it. That doesn't make the product a scam, but it does mean you're relying on the company's published terms rather than a famous face. I'd treat that as a reason to read the terms before paying, not as a red flag on its own.

What TotalAV says it does

TotalAV describes itself as antivirus and online protection. Its site lists real-time protection that scans downloads and installs, malware removal, scheduled scans, tracking cookie clearing, ad blocking and data breach monitoring that checks email addresses against public breach data. It also promotes WebShield, which it says guards against fake, scam, phishing and spoofed websites.

It says the apps work on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Like every vendor, these are TotalAV's own descriptions. I haven't seen an independent test result in the sources I used, so I'm not making any claim about how well it catches threats compared with other tools.

What I checkedWhat TotalAV's own pages say

Monthly plan refund window14 days

Renewal noticeAt least 30 days before an annual renewal

TotalAV refunds: what you need to do first

The refund rules are where most complaints about any antivirus subscription start, so here's the wording as TotalAV publishes it. Its terms say the money-back guarantee covers cancellations within 30 days of starting an annual or biannual plan. Monthly and quarterly plans have a shorter 14-day window.

The detail people miss is that TotalAV says you must fully terminate your subscription first. That means a refund isn't something that happens because you're unhappy and stop using the app. You have to cancel through your account, and you have to do it inside the window. Put the date in your calendar the day you buy.

How TotalAV auto-renewal and cancelling work

TotalAV's terms say plans automatically renew unless cancelled, and renewals are billed at the regular rate unless the page says otherwise. That's worth underlining, because an introductory price and a regular price aren't always the same thing. Check the checkout screen and your confirmation email for the figure that applies to the next billing date.

On the plus side, TotalAV says it gives advance notice at least 30 days before an annual plan renews. To cancel, it says you log into your online portal and visit the My Subscriptions section. It adds that add-ons and linked plans have to be cancelled separately, so if you bought a bundle, check each item.

  • Cancel from the My Subscriptions section of your online portal.
  • Remember that turning off auto-renewal doesn't end your access and doesn't automatically trigger a refund.
  • Cancel add-ons and linked plans one by one.
  • Keep your confirmation emails in case you need to show the date you cancelled.

Auditing your subscriptions every few months is a habit worth building, because renewals are easy to forget.

Is TotalAV safe to install?

Being a legitimate seller and being a good fit for your device are two separate questions. Security software sits deep in your system, so install it only from the official TotalAV website or the official app stores, never from a link in an email, a pop-up or a video description.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Be aware too that the free scan pages and ad-blocking features are part of how the product is marketed. If a scan result pushes you to pay quickly, take a breath. Real security decisions don't have a countdown timer. Compare what it does with what you already have: your device may already include built-in protection, and a browser can block many bad sites on its own.

Fake TotalAV alerts and copycat scams

Antivirus brands are a favourite costume for scammers, and TotalAV is well known enough to be copied. The classic version is a full-screen pop-up saying your computer is infected and giving you a phone number to call. Real software doesn't work that way.

  • Never call a number shown in a browser pop-up or a text message.
  • Don't let a caller 'from TotalAV' take remote control of your computer.
  • Don't pay with gift cards, bank transfers or crypto to anyone claiming to be support.
  • Use the contact details on the official site, typed in yourself, if you need help.
  • If you gave away a password, change it straight away and change it anywhere you reused it.

My verdict on TotalAV

It's a real product from a named company with a published refund window and renewal terms, so I wouldn't call it a scam. The honest caution is about billing, not about whether it exists: set a reminder for the refund window, check what the renewal costs and know where the cancel button is before you pay. If you don't need extra protection, there's no rule that says you must buy any antivirus subscription.
