Is Incogni Legit? Data Removal, Refunds and Limits (2026)

Yes, Incogni is a real subscription service. Its terms name a US company as the operator, and Wikipedia says it began life at Surfshark. It sends removal requests to data brokers for you, but its own terms say it can't guarantee that brokers will act on them, so treat it as a helper rather than a promise.

Paying a company to chase your personal details around the internet is an odd thing to trust, so I get why people search for this one. I've read Incogni's own terms, privacy policy and homepage, plus Wikipedia, so you can see what it says it does and where it draws the line.

Who is behind Incogni

According to Wikipedia, Incogni was created by Surfshark in 2021, launched publicly in 2022 and was later offered as a standalone product. Wikipedia describes it as a subscription-based personal information removal service. Incogni's terms say the service is run by Incogni Inc., a company established in the United States, with a registered address in Mission Viejo, California.

So it's a named company with published terms, not an anonymous app. That settles the question of whether it exists. What matters more is what it can and can't do for you.

How Incogni says its removal service works

The idea is simple. Data brokers and people search sites collect and sell details like your name, address and phone number. Incogni says it scans people search sites for your information and sends removal requests when it finds records. It also says it re-scans and sends fresh waves of requests regularly, because records can reappear.

  • You create an account and give the personal details it needs to search for you.
  • You sign an online authorization form. Incogni says this gives it the power to advocate for your privacy on your behalf.
  • It sends removal requests to brokers and tracks what happens.
  • It repeats the process over time rather than doing a single sweep.

Incogni's homepage claims 420+ data broker sites are covered by automated removals and 3,000+ additional sites through its Custom Removals feature. Those are Incogni's own figures, so read them as marketing claims rather than audited ones.

What Incogni can't promise

This is the most important part. Incogni's terms say it doesn't guarantee that removal requests will be fulfilled by data brokers, and that it doesn't promise any results. The same terms say taking legal action against brokers isn't part of the service.

Its FAQ is also honest about timing: some brokers comply within hours, while others take weeks. A removal request is only a request. The broker decides what happens next and the privacy law that applies to you.

Incogni's data, privacy and who sees your details

A removal service has to hold your details to work, which feels a little backwards, so read the privacy policy. Incogni says you must provide identifiers such as your full name and address details. It says it doesn't sell your personal information. It also says some data is shared with service providers and with data brokers so that removal requests can be sent.

On retention, the policy says service data is stored for no longer than 24 months after the service ends. If that bothers you, ask support what can be deleted sooner before you sign up.

Incogni refunds, renewals and cancelling

Incogni's terms say you have a right to claim a refund within 30 days of your first purchase, and that as a rule you can't claim one after the 30 days have passed. They also say the subscription renews automatically at the end of each service period.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Cancelling switches off future charges, and the terms say you keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for. Deleting your account isn't treated as a refund request. Put the renewal date in your calendar so it doesn't catch you out.

Who can use Incogni

The terms say Incogni is for consumers who are 18 or older. Its homepage says it's available to residents of the US, and it points to a separate FAQ for other regions. Check the sign-up page for your country, because what it can cover depends on the privacy laws where you live.

What I checkedWhat Incogni's own pages say
Who runs it?Incogni Inc., a company established in the United States
Where did it start?Created at Surfshark, per Wikipedia
Does it promise results? No, brokers may not fulfil requests
Refund window?30 days from the first purchase
Does it sell your data?It says it doesn't sell your personal information

Fake Incogni sites and data removal scams

Anyone worried about their privacy is a target. Go to Incogni by typing its address yourself, not through an ad or a message. Be careful with anyone who contacts you out of the blue saying your data is exposed and you must pay at once.

  • Don't pay a stranger by bank transfer or gift card to remove your details.
  • Don't share verification codes with anyone claiming to be support.
  • Check the sender and the web address before you enter your name and address.

If you're tightening up your wider security, my comparison of two popular password managers is a good next read, since strong passwords protect you in ways a removal service can't.

The verdict

Incogni is a real service run by a named US company, and its terms are clear about the limits. It's legit in the sense that it does what it describes, but it isn't magic. It sends requests; brokers decide. If you go ahead, use the 30 day window to see whether it suits you and watch the renewal date.
