How to Blur in Canva: Photos, Faces and Backgrounds

To blur in Canva, select your photo, click Edit, go to Tools and See all, then choose Blur and use the Brush tab for one area or Whole image for everything. The catch: Canva's help says the Blur tool only works on flat images like PNGs and JPGs, not on elements or video designs.

A customer's face in the background of your event photo. A car number plate outside your shop. An email address showing in a screenshot you want to share. Blurring is how you post the picture without sharing what shouldn't be shared, and Canva has a built-in tool for it.

It's also a design trick: a softly blurred background makes text on top far easier to read. Below are the steps from Canva's help centre, the two blur modes, and the limits that catch people out, like the fact that it won't work on video designs.

Blurring a photo inside a Canva design

On a computer, Canva's route is:

  1. Click the photo in your design to select it.
  2. Click Edit on the editor toolbar.
  3. Go to Tools and select See all.
  4. Choose Blur.
  5. Pick Brush to blur part of the photo, or Whole image to blur all of it.

On the phone app, tap the photo, tap Image Tools on the toolbar and tap Blur. The options are the same once you're in.

Blurring just one area in Canva with the Brush

This is the mode for hiding a face, a sign or private details:

  1. In the Blur tool, open the Brush tab.
  2. Set the Brush size to roughly match the area you're covering.
  3. Set the Intensity. Higher means more blur.
  4. Drag over the area you want blurred.
  5. Made a mistake? Switch to the Remove brush and paint over it to bring the detail back.

For privacy, push the intensity high and zoom in to check. A light blur can still leave a name or number readable.

Work in small strokes rather than one big sweep. It's easier to see exactly what you've covered, and if you catch something you meant to keep, like your logo on a shop sign, the Remove brush only has a little to undo. When you're done, look at the photo at the size people will see it on a phone, because that's how most of your audience will view it.

Blurring a whole photo in Canva

Open the Whole image tab and drag the Intensity slider. That softens the entire picture, which is ideal for a background behind a quote, a headline or a call to action.

Keeping your subject sharp with a blurred background

Canva's help suggests a neat combination. Blur the whole image first, then go to the Brush tab and use the Remove brush over your subject to bring it back into focus. It gives a portrait-mode look to an ordinary phone photo.

This works best when the subject has clear edges, such as a person against a wall or a product on a table. Take your time around hair and fingers, and use a smaller brush size there.

If you'd rather Canva did it for you, there's Auto Focus. Select the photo, click Edit, go to Tools, then See all and choose Auto Focus. Drag Blur intensity to set how soft the background gets and Focus position to choose what stays sharp. Select Remove Auto Focus to undo it.

What you can't blur in Canva

The help centre lists clear limits, and knowing them saves a lot of hunting for a missing button:

  • The Blur tool works on flat images such as PNG and JPG files.
  • It isn't available for vector graphics or design elements.
  • It isn't available in video designs.

So if you're trying to blur a shape, a sticker or a text box, the option won't appear. And if you're working on a video, you'll need a video editor instead. Within Canva, the Blur tool is strictly for photos.

Blurring photos from your Canva projects without opening a design

You don't have to place a photo in a design first. From the Canva homepage, go to Projects, then All projects, filter by Images, hover over the photo, select More and choose Edit image. Then go to Tools, See all and Blur. It's handy when you're tidying up a batch of uploads before they go anywhere near a template.

Using blur in small business designs

  • Event and team photos: blur anyone who hasn't agreed to appear online.
  • Screenshots for tutorials: blur email addresses, order details or anything that identifies a customer.
  • Quote cards and adverts: a blurred photo behind your message keeps text readable.
  • Product shots: a soft background keeps the eye on what you're showing.

Blur pairs well with other photo fixes. If the background is so busy that blurring isn't enough, my guide on removing a background in Canva shows the stronger option. And if a photo faces the wrong way for your layout, here's how to flip an image in Canva.

If the Canva Blur tool is missing

  1. Check you've selected a photo, not an element, text box or graphic.
  2. Check the photo is a flat image like a PNG or JPG, not a vector.
  3. Check you're not in a video design, where Canva says blur isn't available.
  4. On a computer, look under Edit, then Tools, then See all. On the app, look under Image Tools.
  5. Still stuck? Try the Projects route: open the image with Edit image and find Blur there.
