To add a border in Canva, open Elements, search for borders and click one to add it, then drag its handles to fit. For a border around a photo or shape, select it and use Stroke style on the toolbar instead. The catch: Canva says text boxes can't take a stroke border.
A thin line around a product photo, a frame around a quote card, a neat edge round a printable certificate: borders are one of those small touches that make a homemade design look finished.
Canva gives you more than one way to do it, and people often pick the wrong one and then wonder why their photo won't sit inside or why the option is missing from a text box. Here's which route fits which job, based on Canva's own help centre.
The three kinds of border Canva offers
| What you want | Canva tool to use | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| A decorative frame or page edge | Border elements from Elements | Any design, as a separate element |
| An outline around a photo, video or shape | Stroke style on the toolbar | Images, videos, frames and shapes |
| Lines around spreadsheet cells | Border in the floating toolbar | Canva Sheets |
Pick the row that matches your job and skip to that section below.
Adding a border element to a Canva design
Border elements are ready-made graphics: ornate corners, simple rectangles, hand-drawn edges. Canva's help gives these steps on a computer:
- Create or open your design.
- Select Elements in the side panel on the left.
- Type borders into the Search elements box and press Enter.
- Scroll through the results.
- Click the border you like to add it.
On the phone app it's the same idea: tap Elements in the toolbar, search for borders and tap one.
To make it fit your page, select it and drag the white circle handles at the edges. To change its colour, select it and click the colour tile on the toolbar. Need two matching ones? Canva says you can press Ctrl + D on Windows or Cmd + D on a Mac to duplicate the selected border.
Putting a stroke border around a photo in Canva
If you want the photo itself to have an edge, don't use a border element. Use Stroke style, which Canva also calls a border:
- Select the image, video, frame or shape.
- Click Stroke style on the editor toolbar.
- Choose a style, such as a solid or dashed line.
- Drag the stroke weight slider, or type a number, to set the thickness.
- Click the Color tile to change its colour.
- For softer edges, select Corners and adjust Corner rounding.
Because Stroke style works on frames, shapes and videos as well as photos, it's the quickest route when you want every visual in a design to share the same edge, set to the same thickness and colour each time.
Rounded corners with a thin white stroke work well for headshots on a team page or product shots on a sales graphic.
Why a Canva border element won't hold a photo
This trips up a lot of people. Canva's help says you can't add photos to border elements. They're decorative graphics, not containers. If you want an image to sit inside a shape and fill it, use a frame or a grid instead. My guide on cropping photos, videos and frames in Canva shows how frames behave once a photo is dropped in.
Adding a border around text in Canva
According to the help centre, stroke borders aren't supported on text boxes, shadows, flipped shapes and some editable shape types. So if you select a heading and can't find Stroke style, nothing's broken.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Two workarounds that stay inside Canva's own features:
- Add a shape from Elements, then Shapes, and type your text into it. Shapes can carry text for callouts and labels, and you can give the shape a stroke.
- Place a border element behind the text box and resize it to fit.
If you want the letters themselves outlined rather than boxed, that's a different effect. I've covered it in my walk-through on outline and hollow text in Canva.
Putting borders on table cells in Canva Sheets
If you're working in Canva Sheets, borders work like a spreadsheet:
- Select a cell and drag the handle to cover the cells you want.
- Click Border in the floating toolbar.
- Pick a border type, then a colour and style.
- Use the Show Gridlines slider if you want to hide the grey grid behind it.
Border ideas for small business designs in Canva
- Social quote cards: a single thin border element in your brand colour keeps a series looking consistent.
- Printables and certificates: a classic double-line border reads as formal and finished.
- Product photos: a white stroke with slight corner rounding lifts a photo off a busy background.
- Menus and event flyers: borders that divide the page into sections help people scan.
If you post the same kind of graphic every week, build the border into one master design and duplicate it each time. That way the border, colour and thickness never drift between posts, and anyone helping you with social content gets the same result without guessing.
Keep it to one style per design. Mixing an ornate border with chunky strokes tends to look cluttered.
If you can't add a border in Canva
- No Stroke style option? You've probably selected a text box, a flipped shape or a shadow. Canva doesn't support strokes on those.
- Photo won't go inside the border? Use a frame or grid instead, since border elements can't hold photos.
- Border in the wrong place? Select it and drag the white circle handles in or out until it sits where you want.
- Can't find a style you like? Try another word alongside borders in the Search elements box, such as a colour or a theme.
