To make labels in Google Docs, set the paper size and margins in File, Page setup, insert a table with one cell per label, then set the width and height in Table options. What trips people up is that Google's help describes no built-in label template, so you match the table to your sheet.
Labels come up all the time when you run a small business from the kitchen table: address labels for orders, little product stickers, name badges for a workshop, or tidy tags for storage boxes. It feels like Google Docs ought to have a label button. It doesn't.
Google's help doesn't describe a built-in label maker or label template in Google Docs. What it does give you is a table and a Page setup box, and with those two you can lay out a sheet of labels that lines up with the sticker sheets you buy. Here's how I'd do it, step by step.
Before you start: measure your label sheet
Everything hangs on matching your document to the paper. Grab the packet your label sheets came in and note:
- The paper size of the whole sheet.
- How many labels across and how many down.
- The width and height of one label.
- The gap at the top, bottom and sides of the sheet before the first label starts.
Most packets print these on the back or on the box. If yours doesn't, measure one sheet carefully with a ruler. A few millimetres out and the text drifts across the edges by the bottom row.
Setting the page size and margins for labels in Google Docs
- Open a new document on a computer.
- Click File, then Page setup.
- Make sure Pages is selected at the top. Google says these options aren't available in pageless documents.
- Set the Paper size to match your label sheet.
- Set the Margins to the gaps you measured at the top, bottom and sides.
- Click OK.
Building the label grid with a table in Google Docs
Now add a table with one cell per label. According to Google's table help:
- Click Insert, then Table.
- Choose the number of columns to match labels across, and rows to match labels down.
Google says tables can be as large as 20 x 20 cells, which covers every label sheet I've come across.
Sizing each label cell to match your sheet
Select the whole table, then open Format, Table, then Table options. You can also right-click the table to find it. Google's help says this is where you set:
| Table options section | What to enter for labels |
|---|---|
| Column | The width of one label |
| Row | The height of one label |
| Cell | Vertical alignment, usually middle, and cell padding so text doesn't touch the edges |
| Table | Alignment on the page: Left, Center or Right |
If the rows or columns end up uneven, right-click the table and choose Distribute rows or Distribute columns. Google says that makes them all the same size.
Adding your text, logo and border to each label
- Type the first label in the top left cell and format it how you want: font, size, alignment.
- Add your logo as an image in the cell, if you want one.
- Copy that cell's contents and paste into the others, then change the details for each address or product.
- Select all the cells and use the border colour, border width and border dash controls in the toolbar to lighten or hide the grid lines.
Google notes that borders aren't in Table options; they're in the toolbar once cells are selected. I'd keep a faint border for your test print, then make it invisible for the real one.
If your logo has a white box around it that looks odd on a coloured label, my guide to making a transparent background in Canva shows how to export a cleaner version first.

Test printing your Google Docs labels
- Print one page on plain paper first: click File, then Print, choose your settings and click Print.
- Hold the test sheet against a label sheet up to the light.
- Adjust margins or row heights if anything's out, then test again.
- Only then load the real label sheets.
Two things from Google's print help matter here. Wide tables are shrunk to fit the page, which will throw your measurements off if the table is wider than the space between the margins. And if you want control over the printed layout, stay in pages format rather than pageless.
Making product labels and name badges in Google Docs
The same grid works for more than addresses. For product stickers, I'd put the product name in bold at the top of each cell, a short line underneath for the scent, size or flavour, and your logo small in a corner. For workshop name badges, make the name as large as the cell allows and keep the business name below it in a smaller size.
Whatever the label, keep it simple. A label is read in a second or two, so one clear message per cell beats a crowded one, and a good margin of white space inside each cell makes small text easier to read.
Keeping a reusable label document
Once a layout prints well, save it and name it clearly, such as Address labels master. Next time, make a copy of that file and change the details rather than starting again. If you keep your address list in Google Sheets, a column of tick boxes is a neat way to mark who's had a label printed, and my walkthrough of adding checkboxes in Google Sheets sets that up quickly.
If your Google Docs labels don't line up
- Everything drifts down the page: the row height or top margin is slightly off. Adjust in small steps.
- Text sits off-centre: check cell padding and vertical alignment in Table options.
- The table looks squashed when printed: Google says wide tables are shrunk to fit, so make sure the columns fit inside the margins.
- Page setup options are missing: switch to Pages under Format.

How many labels can a Google Docs table hold?
Google says tables can be as large as 20 x 20 cells.
How do I hide the table lines on my labels?
Select the cells and use the border controls in the toolbar. Google says borders aren't in Table options.
Why don't my labels line up when printed?
