How to AutoFit Columns in Excel (Double-Click or Ribbon)

To autofit columns in Excel, select them and double-click the boundary on the right of any selected column letter, or go to Home, Format in the Cells group, then AutoFit Column Width. If it won't budge, check for merged cells, because Microsoft says AutoFit can't resize those columns.

Hash signs where your dates should be, email addresses chopped off halfway, product names spilling over the next cell. All of that usually comes down to column widths. AutoFit tells Excel to size each column to its longest entry, so everything shows without you dragging borders by eye.

It takes seconds once you know where it lives, and there's a double-click trick that I'd argue is one of the most useful shortcuts in Excel. It's also the quickest way to make a downloaded report from your shop, form or email tool readable before you start working on it, because those exports rarely arrive with sensible column widths. Here's how both work, plus why AutoFit sometimes refuses to budge.

Autofitting one column in Excel with a double-click

This is my go-to, because there's no menu to hunt for.

  1. Move your mouse to the column letters along the top of the sheet.
  2. Hover over the line on the right-hand edge of the column you want to resize, until the pointer turns into a double-headed arrow.
  3. Double-click.

The column snaps to fit its widest entry. Microsoft describes this as double-clicking the boundary to the right of the column heading.

Autofitting several Excel columns at once

  1. Click the first column letter and drag across to select the others. Hold Ctrl and click if they're not next to each other.
  2. Double-click the right-hand boundary of any of the selected column headings.

Every selected column resizes to its own content, not to the same width. That's the bit people expect to go wrong, but it's exactly what you want.

Autofitting every column on the sheet

For a fresh export where everything is squashed, fix the lot in one go:

  1. Click the Select All button, the small triangle in the top-left corner where the row numbers and column letters meet.
  2. Double-click any boundary between two column headings.

Microsoft notes a twist here. If you drag a boundary instead of double-clicking while the whole sheet is selected, you set one identical width for every column. Handy for a neat printed layout, but not the same as AutoFit.

Using the AutoFit Column Width command on the ribbon

If double-clicking feels fiddly, especially on a trackpad, use the menu.

  1. Select the column or columns.
  2. Go to the Home tab.
  3. In the Cells group, select Format.
  4. Choose AutoFit Column Width.

The same Format menu holds AutoFit Row Height, which does the same job for rows. You can also double-click the boundary below a row number to fit a row to its content, which helps after you've turned on text wrapping.

Setting an exact column width in Excel instead

AutoFit is great for reading, but sometimes you want consistent widths, such as a template you print for clients. For that, set a number.

  1. Select the columns.
  2. Go to Home, Format in the Cells group, then Column Width. Or right-click a selected column heading and choose Column Width.
  3. Type a value and select OK.

Microsoft says column width can be anything from 0, which hides the column, up to 255. The default is 8.43, and the unit is how many characters of the default font fit in the cell. Row height is measured in points, from 0 up to 409, with a default of 15.00.

Copying a column width to another Excel column

If one column is the perfect width and you want another to match, Microsoft offers a neat trick. Copy a cell from the column you like, right-click a cell in the target column, point to Paste Special and choose Keep Source Columns Widths. Only the width carries over, not the content.

You can also change the starting width for new columns. Go to Home, Format, Default Width and type a value in the Standard column width box. To apply it to the whole workbook, right-click a sheet tab and choose Select All Sheets first.

When AutoFit won't resize your Excel columns

A few things stop AutoFit from doing what you expect:

  1. Merged cells. Microsoft says you can't use AutoFit on a column that contains a cell merged with cells in other columns. Unmerge the cells, or set the width by hand.
  2. Wrapped text. A column with wrapped text won't grow wider, because the text breaks onto new lines instead. Use AutoFit Row Height to show all of it.
  3. A very long entry. One overlong note in a column will make it huge. Shorten the note, or wrap that cell.
  4. Still seeing hash signs? The column needs to be wider for that number or date. Try AutoFit again after you've changed the number format.

Why tidy columns help when you share spreadsheets

For small business owners and creators, spreadsheets often go to other people: a client report, a content calendar, a list of collaborators. Clipped text makes a file look unfinished, and hash signs can make people think a number is broken.

So I make AutoFit the last step before I send anything. If your team works in the browser too, my guides to totals in Google Sheets and checklists in Google Sheets help you keep shared trackers just as tidy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I autofit columns in Excel quickly?

Double-click the boundary on the right of the column letter. To fit several, select them first and double-click any of their boundaries.

Where is AutoFit Column Width in Excel?

On the Home tab, in the Cells group, select Format, then AutoFit Column Width.

How do I autofit all columns in Excel at once?

Click the Select All button in the top-left corner of the sheet, then double-click any boundary between two column headings.

Why won't AutoFit work on my column?

Microsoft says AutoFit doesn't work on a column containing a cell merged with cells in other columns. Wrapped text also stops a column getting wider.

What's the maximum column width in Excel?

Microsoft says a column can be up to 255 wide, measured in characters of the default font. The default is 8.43.
