To close an Etsy shop, open Shop Manager on Etsy.com, go to Settings, then Options, select the Close Shop tab, pick a reason and select Close Shop. What trips people up: the option won't appear until open cases are resolved, and if you only need a break, vacation mode is the gentler choice.
There are plenty of good reasons to close an Etsy shop. You might be moving your products to your own website, taking a long break, changing direction completely or simply ready to stop. Whatever the reason, it's a decision worth making calmly, because closing a shop isn't the same as pausing it, and it isn't the same as deleting your Etsy account.
I'll walk through Etsy's own steps for closing a shop, what has to be cleared first, what your customers see afterwards, and the gentler option if you only need a break. I'll also cover how to bring a closed shop back if you change your mind.
Close, pause or delete: picking the right Etsy option
| Choice | What it does | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|
| Vacation mode | Shop stays visible, buyers can't place new orders | Yes, switch it off |
| Closing the shop | Your shop disappears, account becomes buyer-only | Yes, you can reopen it |
| Close account | Closes your whole Etsy account | Yes, it can be reopened |
| Permanently delete account | Removes the account for good | No |
If you're only stepping away for a while, vacation mode is usually the kinder choice for your shop. If you're finished with selling but still want to buy on Etsy, closing the shop is the right one.
Before you close your Etsy shop
Etsy's help says the closing option may not appear until you've tidied a couple of things up:
- Resolve any open or unresolved cases with buyers.
- Settle anything Etsy says is outstanding on your account. The help page explains what has to be cleared first.
- Finish any orders customers are still waiting for, or switch on vacation mode while you complete them.
- Check your account details are correct and current before you go.
If your shop was never made public, it's still a draft, and Etsy's help says to contact Etsy Support through the Contact support option at the bottom of its help page instead.
Steps to close your Etsy shop
- Sign in on Etsy.com and open Shop Manager.
- Go to Settings and choose Options.
- Select the Close Shop tab.
- Choose your reason from the dropdown menu. Etsy may ask you a few short survey questions.
- Select Close Shop.
Etsy's help notes the system can take a little time to process the closure, so don't worry if the shop doesn't vanish the very same second.
What happens after you close an Etsy shop
- Your Etsy account becomes a buyer-only account.
- Your shop is no longer visible to shoppers.
- You can still see your existing orders.
- If you closed with orders still open, you can keep messaging those customers.
- Listings may expire while the shop is closed.
Your shop name stays tied to your account. Etsy's help says even closing your whole account won't free up the shop name, username or email address for re-use on a new account, so you can't simply close and start fresh under the same name elsewhere on Etsy.
Telling your customers you're closing your Etsy shop
If you've built a following, don't let the shop just disappear. A short, warm goodbye goes a long way:
- Post a shop announcement a week or two before closing, so regulars can make a last purchase.
- Reply to any open conversations and say where people can find you next.
- Update your social media bios and remove old shop links.
- If you're moving to your own site or another platform, share the new link in your last posts.
If you're thinking of selling through social video instead, I've written about how TikTok Shop works in Ireland, which is a useful comparison for UK and Irish makers.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
It's also worth saving anything you'll want later before you close: your best listing photos, product descriptions and any customer messages you'd like to keep for reference. Your existing orders stay visible, but it's easier to reuse your own words and pictures on a new website if you've already got copies on your computer.
Reopening a closed Etsy shop later
Changed your mind? Etsy lets you reopen. Its help says this needs a desktop or laptop: the process doesn't work on a mobile browser or the Etsy Seller app.
- Sign in on Etsy.com on a computer.
- Open the link in the shop closure confirmation email Etsy sent you, or the shop status page link in Shop Manager.
- Select Reopen shop.
- Check whether any listings expired while you were away, and review your account details.
Reopening also means you keep your shop name and history, which is often better than starting from scratch. If you're relaunching from overseas, my guide to selling on Etsy from Thailand covers the practical setup.
If the Close Shop option is missing on Etsy
- Look for open cases in your shop and resolve them.
- Check whether Etsy shows anything outstanding on your account, and clear it.
- Make sure you're on Etsy.com in a browser, in Shop Manager, under Settings and then Options.
- If your shop was never published, contact Etsy Support rather than looking for the tab.
Frequently asked questions
How do I close my Etsy shop?
On Etsy.com, open Shop Manager, go to Settings, then Options, select the Close Shop tab, choose a reason and select Close Shop.
Does closing my Etsy shop delete my account?
No. Etsy's help says your account becomes buyer-only and your shop is hidden. Closing or deleting the account is a separate step.
Can I reopen a closed Etsy shop?
Yes. Sign in on a computer, use the link in your closure confirmation email or the shop status page in Shop Manager, and select Reopen shop.
Why can't I see the Close Shop option on Etsy?
Etsy says you need to resolve open cases and clear anything outstanding on your account first. Draft shops that were never public need Etsy Support instead.
Should I use vacation mode instead of closing?
If you're taking a break or still finishing orders, vacation mode keeps your shop visible while stopping new orders, and you can switch it off when you're back.
