Is Wealthfront Legit? Regulation, Cash Cover and Fees (2026)

Wealthfront is a real investing company founded in 2008 and listed on Nasdaq, and its disclosures name an SEC-registered investment adviser and a FINRA and SIPC member broker. The catch is that investing involves risk, and its own pages say advisory services aren't FDIC insured, so read how your cash and investments are each protected.

Putting money into an app you've only seen advertised is a big step, so asking whether Wealthfront is legit is exactly what I'd want people to do. I'm not a financial adviser, and nothing here is advice. What I can do is read Wealthfront's own disclosures and pricing page and Wikipedia, and set out who is responsible for what so you can check it against your own situation.

Who is behind Wealthfront

According to Wikipedia, Wealthfront was founded in 2008 by Andy Rachleff and Dan Carroll, originally as kaChing, a mutual fund analysis company, and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. It also says Wealthfront completed an IPO on the Nasdaq in 2025 under the ticker WLTH. A listed company has to publish regular filings, which gives you more to check than a private start-up.

Wikipedia also records that UBS agreed in 2022 to acquire Wealthfront for 1.4 billion US dollars, and that the deal was mutually terminated later that year with no reason given. That's a piece of history, not a warning, but it shows the company has been through big changes.

Which companies run Wealthfront's services

Wealthfront's disclosures page splits the business into separate companies. It says investment management is provided by Wealthfront Advisers LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. Brokerage products, including the cash account, are provided by Wealthfront Brokerage LLC, a member of FINRA and SIPC. The pricing page adds that Wealthfront Software LLC provides financial planning tools.

Those names matter. When you read your agreement, you'll see which company is responsible for which service, and you can look them up with the regulators yourself. Being registered isn't a promise of results, but it's the baseline you'd expect.

How protected is cash at Wealthfront?

Cash and investments are protected differently, and this is the part many people mix up. The disclosures say Wealthfront Brokerage uses program banks to provide FDIC coverage of up to 8 million US dollars for your cash deposits, while FDIC insurance coverage is limited to 250,000 US dollars per qualified customer account per banking institution.

They also say that while your funds are at Wealthfront, before they get swept to program banks, they're subject to SIPC's protection limit of 250,000 US dollars for cash. Deposits at program banks are not covered by SIPC. If you hold a large balance, read this section slowly and ask Wealthfront how your own balance is covered.

Are Wealthfront investments insured?

The pricing page says investment management and advisory services are not FDIC insured. That's true of investing in general: investing involves risk, and you can get back less than you put in. I'm not going to comment on returns or performance, because I'd be guessing, and the disclosures are clear that the investments themselves can lose value.

How Wealthfront charges for advice

The pricing page doesn't give an advisory fee percentage in the text I could read. It describes the method: each month you're charged an advisory fee equal to 1/365 of the annual rate, or 1/366 in a leap year, applied daily to your net market value. So the fee follows the value of your account, and it's taken over time rather than in one go. Find the actual rate for your account on Wealthfront's own page before you open it.

Wealthfront cash account

Wikipedia says Wealthfront launched its Cash Account in 2019, with deposits held at partner banks. The disclosures describe the brokerage side and the program banks. The pricing page I read didn't state a rate, and rates change, so check the figure shown in the app on the day you decide.

Spotting fake Wealthfront messages

Anything involving money attracts impersonators. Be wary of messages that promise high returns, ask you to move money to a new account or ask for your login by text or phone. Use the official website or app, not a link, and check any adviser or broker name with the regulators. If you're working out how much you could set aside, the saving habits that changed things for me are a practical place to start, and my look at online business banking helps if you're keeping business money separate.

Is Wealthfront worth considering?

Wealthfront is a real, listed company that names its regulated entities and explains how cash is protected. It isn't a guarantee of returns, and the protection rules for cash and investments differ. Read the disclosures for your own situation, check the fee on your account and consider speaking to a qualified adviser before you invest.
