Is Webull Legit? SIPC, Fees, Margin and Fines (2026)

Webull is a real trading app: its US brokerage, Webull Financial LLC, is a FINRA and SIPC member, according to its own disclosures. They also say SIPC doesn't protect against market losses and margin raises the risk of loss, and regulators have fined the firm, so read the fee and risk pages first. Investing involves risk.

Trading apps make it very easy to move money, which is exactly why I'd want to know who's behind one before I fund an account. Webull comes up a lot, partly because of its free trading and partly because of the questions about its ownership. This isn't investment advice and I'm not commenting on returns. I've read Webull's own disclosure text and Wikipedia's company entry, so here's a plain summary of what they say about regulation, protection, fees and past fines.

Who is Webull and which company holds your account

According to Wikipedia, Webull Corporation is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker BULL and is headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida. The part that matters for US customers is the broker-dealer. Webull's disclosures say Webull Financial LLC is a broker-dealer registered with the SEC and a member of FINRA and SIPC. Wikipedia adds that its US brokerage began in 2018. Advisory accounts and futures accounts sit with separate Webull companies, so check which one applies to the account you open.

What Webull SIPC protection covers and what it leaves out

Webull's disclosures say client securities accounts receive SIPC protection up to a maximum of 500,000 US dollars, which includes a 250,000 US dollar limit for cash. Then comes the sentence that people skip: SIPC doesn't protect against market value losses. In other words, SIPC is about a broker failing, not about your investments falling in price. The disclosures also note that futures accounts aren't SIPC-protected.

The same text talks about excess coverage that depends on how the account is cleared, so read the exact wording on Webull's page for the account type you're opening.

Which Webull accounts the zero commission claim covers

Webull's disclosures say the commission-free offer covers self-directed individual cash or margin brokerage accounts and IRAs that trade US-listed securities. Advisory accounts are offered through Webull Advisors LLC and futures accounts through Webull Futures LLC, which are separate companies with their own terms. If you're not sure which one you're opening, ask before you fund it.

Webull's zero commission claim and the fees that remain

Webull's disclosures say stocks, ETFs and options trade at 0 commissions in eligible US self-directed accounts. They also say regulatory and exchange fees may apply, and that certain index options carry per-contract fees. So zero commission doesn't mean zero cost. Read the fee page for the product you plan to use before you place a trade.

Margin trading on Webull

Margin is borrowing against your account, and Webull's disclosures are direct about the risks. They say margin trading increases the risk of loss and includes the possibility of a forced sale, that margin isn't available for all account types, and that it requires Webull's review and approval. If you're new to investing, that's a section to read twice, and a good reason to understand how a forced sale works before you switch margin on.

What regulators have said about Webull

This is the part I'd want to know about any broker. According to Wikipedia, FINRA fined Webull Financial LLC 3 million US dollars in 2023 over options-trading account approvals and the handling of customer complaints. In 2024 the SEC fined Webull Financial 125,000 US dollars over incomplete suspicious activity reports, and in 2025 FINRA fined it 1.6 million US dollars over social-media marketing, disclosures and trading controls.

Fines like these don't mean an account is unsafe, and I'm stating them neutrally, but they're a reminder to read disclosures rather than adverts. For the primary record, FINRA's BrokerCheck lets you look up any US brokerage and its disciplinary history.

How to check any broker, including Webull

  1. Look up the firm in FINRA's BrokerCheck.
  2. Confirm SIPC membership in the broker's own disclosures.
  3. Read the fee schedule for the products you'll use.
  4. Read the margin and options risk disclosures even if you don't plan to use them.
  5. Be wary of anyone who contacts you offering tips or asking you to move funds.

Spotting fake Webull messages

Finance apps attract scammers. Open the app yourself rather than tapping a link in a text or email, never share your login code, and be suspicious of social media accounts that promise to manage your trades. If you follow companies closely, why a watchlist needs a news feed is worth a read, and the money saving tips that worked for me come before any trade.
