Is Stake.us Legit? How the Sweepstakes Model Works (2026)

Stake.us is a real sweepstakes casino site, and Wikipedia names Sweepsteaks Ltd as the company behind it. Its help centre says Stake Cash can be redeemed for crypto prizes once you meet the rules. The catch: it's 21 and over only, it's blocked in 22 states, regulators in Illinois and Michigan have challenged it, and any money you spend on coin bundles can be lost.

People ask me about Stake.us because the adverts make it sound like free money, and the streamers make it look like a casino. Neither picture tells you how it works. I've read through the Stake.us help centre and what US regulators have published about it, so you can judge it on the company's own words rather than a highlight reel.

Who runs Stake.us and how the sweepstakes model works

Wikipedia's entry on Stake describes Sweepsteaks Ltd. as the corporation responsible for running the Stake.us site. It sits apart from Stake.com, the international crypto casino Ed Craven and Bijan Tehrani founded. The US site exists because real-money online casinos aren't allowed in most states, so it runs as a sweepstakes or social casino instead.

That model rests on two kinds of tokens. You play for fun with one and play for prizes with the other, and the legal argument for the whole thing depends on the idea that you can get the prize tokens without buying anything. That's why the wording on the site is so careful.

Gold Coins and Stake Cash on Stake.us

According to the help centre, Gold Coins have no real cash value and can't be cashed in for prizes. You get them when you create an account, by claiming a daily login bonus, through promotions, or by buying Gold Coin bundles. Playing with them also counts towards the VIP rank.

Stake Cash is the second token. The help article calls it a virtual token currency that, like Gold Coin, has no cash value, yet it's the one you can redeem for crypto prizes. You receive it free when you buy a Gold Coin bundle, through promotions, or through daily bonuses. So in practice, most people who pile up Stake Cash do it by buying Gold Coins.

How Stake.us redemptions work

You can't redeem Stake Cash straight away. The redemption progress article says any Stake Cash you receive as a bonus with a Gold Coin purchase has to be played through at least 3x before redemption opens up. Its own example: a 10 SC bonus means wagering at least 30 SC first. Each new purchase locks the redemption section again until that new amount has been played through.

Once you've met that and you hold enough Stake Cash to reach the redemption minimum, you go to Wallet, then Redeem, and confirm with a two-factor code or a code sent by email. The help centre doesn't spell out the minimum on the pages I read, so check it inside your account before you assume you can redeem a small balance.

Verification and the age rule at Stake.us

Stake.us says its platform is only for users aged 21 or older, and that's in section 4.b of its terms. If you opened an account before you turned 21, the help centre says you'll need to contact support once you reach that age.

Identity checks go through a third-party provider called Veriff. You take a live photo of your ID card or driver's license on a flat surface, then a live selfie. Screenshots, photos of screens and temporary documents won't be accepted. Expect this step before you can redeem, and don't be surprised if a blurry upload gets rejected.

Which states can't use Stake.us

This list matters more than anything else on the page. Stake.us's own restricted states article names 22 states where it can't serve players because of their regulations:

  • Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho and Illinois
  • Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland and Michigan
  • Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia

The list has grown over time, so read the live version before you sign up rather than relying on an older review. Using a VPN to get round a state block is the kind of thing that can lose you an account and any balance in it.

What regulators have said about Stake.us

Two state regulators have published letters. The Michigan Gaming Control Board said it sent a cease-and-desist letter to Sweepstakes Limited (Stake.us), based in Limassol, Cyprus, alleging it was promoting an unlicensed online lottery or raffle. The board added that the companies it named had each taken steps to stop Michigan residents gambling on their websites.

In a letter dated February 4, 2026, the Illinois Gaming Board said it has reason to believe Stake (stake.us) is operating an illegal online casino under Illinois law, that it hasn't licensed or authorized the site, and it demanded that Stake either block Illinois residents or stop offering cash and crypto prizes. Both Michigan and Illinois now appear on Stake.us's own restricted list. I'm not going to tell you whether it's lawful where you live: that's for your state's regulator, and the terms say what Stake.us will and won't allow.

The real catch with Stake.us

Sweepstakes or not, the games are casino-style games and the outcome is chance. If you buy Gold Coin bundles to get bonus Stake Cash, you can lose every cent of what you spend, and the playthrough rule means you'll be wagering that Stake Cash several times before you can redeem any of it. That's how the house edge does its work.

Stake.us does give you two tools if it stops being fun. Break in Play stops you playing or buying while you can still log in and redeem what's left. Self-Exclusion shuts the account completely. The help centre says both are irreversible once set, so pick the length carefully. Set yourself a spending limit before you start, never chase losses, and if gambling is causing problems, talk to someone and use those tools.

If you're curious about the maths behind table games, my piece on what AI research tells us about blackjack and poker explains why the odds favour the house over time. And if what you really want is extra income, side hustle ideas you can run alongside your business are a far steadier bet than any casino site.

Fake Stake.us offers to watch out for

Popular names attract copycats. Stake.us's help centre describes redeeming inside your own Wallet and verifying through Veriff. It doesn't describe a stranger on social media offering to load your account, sell you Stake Cash or recover a balance for a fee. Only log in through the official site or the iOS app, turn on two-factor authentication, and never share your login or verification codes with anyone.
