Is Current App Legit? FDIC Cover, Advances and Fees (2026)

Current is a real US financial technology company, but it says in its own disclosures that it isn't an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services are provided by Choice Financial Group and/or Cross River Bank, both Member FDIC, and insurance depends on conditions being met. Check the overdraft, advance and fee terms for your own situation.

People search for this one because Current looks like a bank, has a card and an app, and then offers things like early pay and overdraft cover that banks don't always advertise. The honest answer starts with what Current says about itself. I've read its legal disclosures and support pages so you can see the wording that matters, especially around deposit insurance.

Who runs Current, and is it a bank?

Wikipedia lists Current as a US financial services company, also known as Finco Services, Inc. Its disclosures page is direct: Current is a financial technology company, not an FDIC-insured bank. The banking services come from partner banks, which the page names as Choice Financial Group, Member FDIC, and/or Cross River Bank, Member FDIC.

The debit card may be issued by either of those banks, and the page says the Visa secured charge card is issued by Cross River Bank. If you're used to a traditional bank, that's the big difference to understand: you're using an app that sits on top of banks, not an account held with Current itself.

How Current's FDIC wording works

This is the part to read slowly. Current's disclosures say FDIC insurance only covers the failure of an FDIC-insured bank. They also say insurance up to 250,000 US dollars is available on customer funds through pass-through insurance, and that there may be a risk it isn't available because conditions haven't been satisfied.

None of that makes the app unsafe, and I'm not giving a verdict on your money. It simply means the protection is described with conditions attached. If deposit insurance matters to you, read the full disclosure on Current's site and the FDIC's own explanation of pass-through coverage before moving a large balance.

What the Current app offers

Current's pages describe a spending account with a debit card, savings features it calls Savings Pods, crypto services, tax filing and a Paycheck Advance. Each comes with its own terms, so I'd treat them as separate products rather than one bundle. Some are offered by partners: the disclosures say crypto services are powered by Zero Hash, and that cryptocurrency isn't insured by the FDIC or any other government-backed or third-party insurance.

Current's Paycheck Advance and overdraft cover

Paycheck Advance is offered by Finco Advance LLC, which Current's disclosures describe as a financial technology company, not a bank. Current's support pages say standard advance funds typically arrive within three business days at no cost, while an optional expedited route carries an Instant Access Fee that the app shows when you request an advance. The same pages say using it doesn't need a credit score check.

The overdraft feature has conditions too. The disclosures say the Fee-Free Overdraft amount can change at Current's discretion, and that eligibility requires at least 200 US dollars in qualifying direct deposits over 35 days. Limits vary by person, and different pages quote different maximums, so rely on what the app shows you rather than a headline figure.

  • Read the advance terms before you request one, including when repayment is collected.
  • Look at the fee shown for faster delivery before you accept it.
  • Check whether your paycheck counts as a qualifying direct deposit.
  • Make a note of your repayment date so it doesn't surprise you.

Fees and points to check on Current

The disclosures also say fees may apply, such as out-of-network ATM fees and foreign transaction fees. Points have an end date too, and they expire 365 days after they settle. If you use a rewards feature, spend it before it lapses.

If you're comparing apps, it's worth reading about how card and rewards products treat people building credit. My piece on credit card rewards programmes for low credit scores covers the questions to ask, though it isn't a recommendation of any product.

What regulators and the press say about Current

I didn't find a regulator action against Current in the sources I checked, so I won't invent one. If you want to check for yourself, search the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's enforcement and complaint pages and the FDIC's site, and read recent coverage from a major news outlet. For any complaint of your own, the CFPB is the official route in the US.

Fake Current messages and support scams

Money apps are a favourite target for impersonators. Current's real support is inside the app and on its own support site. Be wary of anyone who:

  • Messages you on social media offering to fix a frozen account.
  • Asks you to send money first to release a bigger advance.
  • Wants a one-time code from a text message.
  • Pushes you to click a link to confirm your login.

If a payment app asks you for money to release money, treat that as a red flag and contact the company through the app itself.

So, is Current legit?

It's a real company with named partner banks and detailed disclosures. Whether it suits you comes down to the conditions on insurance, advances and overdraft, which I can't judge for your situation. Read the terms, keep your balance in line with what you're comfortable with, and if you also take card payments for a side business, my comparison of Stripe and PayPal for small businesses is a useful next read.
