To change margins in Google Docs on a computer, click File, then Page setup, select Pages at the top, enter your margin values and click OK. You can also drag the triangle on the ruler. Margins don't work in pageless documents, so switch to pages format first.
Margins are the empty borders around your text, and they quietly decide how a document feels. Squeeze them and a proposal looks cramped. Widen them and a short report suddenly fills a decent number of pages. If you send documents to clients, a printed handout, or a school or college submission with set rules, you'll end up fiddling with them sooner or later.
Google gives you two routes: a dialog with exact values, and a drag-it-yourself ruler. I'll cover both, using Google's own help pages, plus what to do if the option seems to have disappeared.
Changing Google Docs margins in the Page setup dialog
This is the precise method, and the one to use when someone has told you the margins they want. Google's help gives the route like this:
- Open your document in Google Docs on a computer.
- Click File, then Page setup.
- At the top of the dialog, select Pages.
- Choose the margin settings and enter your values for each side.
- Click OK.
Google also puts a Set as default button in that dialog. Click it and your settings apply to new documents you create. It's a useful one if you always work to the same layout, such as a branded report template, because you only set the margins once.
Dragging Google Docs margins with the ruler
The ruler is quicker when you just want things to look right. Google's help says to select the text, graphics or images you want to change, then drag the triangle on the ruler to where you want the margin to sit.
Do this on a selection rather than the whole page if you only want one block moved. For a whole document, the dialog is the safer choice, because a stray drag can change one paragraph and leave the rest where they were.
Setting different margins for part of a Google Docs file
Google says that to change margins for specific sections, you click File, then Page Setup, choose the sections, set your margins and click Ok. If you need a cover page with wide margins and a body with narrower ones, add a section break first, then apply the margin change to the section you choose.
Section break lines are hidden by default. Google says to show them by going to View and choosing Show section breaks, a setting that applies to every document you open until you switch it off. Header and footer margins are adjusted separately, so changing the page margins won't move a header.
Why Google Docs margin settings are missing or greyed out
The usual culprit is the document format. Google says margin settings aren't available in pageless documents, and that you have to switch to pages format first. Pageless is the continuous-scroll layout with no page edges, so there's nothing for a margin to measure against.
To switch back, go to File, then Page setup, and select Pages at the top, then click OK. You can also use the Format menu and choose Switch to Pages format. Google adds that pages format is where headers, footers, page numbers, orientation and margins live.

Changing Google Docs margins on Android or iPhone
The mobile apps are more limited. The Android help lists orientation, paper size and page colour under Edit, then More, then Page setup, and I couldn't find margin controls in the mobile pages. I couldn't confirm anything for the iPhone and iPad app either. My advice is simple: do the margin work on a computer, then pick the document back up on your phone to read it.
Which Google Docs margin option to pick
| What you want | Best route in Google Docs |
|---|---|
| Exact values on every side | File > Page setup > Pages, then enter the values |
| Set margins for every new document | Click Set as default in the Page setup dialog |
| A quick visual nudge | Select text and drag the ruler triangle |
| Different margins for a section | Add a section break, then File > Page Setup and choose the sections |
| Header or footer spacing | Adjust it separately from the page margins |
Using Google Docs margins to make a document easier to read
Wide margins give the eye somewhere to rest, which helps with long reports and anything your readers will annotate. Tight margins save space, but they can make a page feel like a wall of text. If the document is going to a client, I'd rather trim words than squeeze the borders.
If you're laying out a CV in Docs, what makes a resume look good to a hiring manager is worth reading before you shrink the margins to fit one more line. And for visual balance, what makes a resume design look modern without being distracting covers how much white space is too much.
Checking your Google Docs margins before you share
- Look at the first and last page, since odd breaks often show up there.
- Check any tables and images still fit inside the new margins.
- Make sure headers and footers still sit where you expect.
- Print or save a preview if the document has to meet a set format.
If your tweaks make text jump to a new page you didn't want, that's usually the margins pushing a line over the edge. Nudge the ruler slightly, or tighten one paragraph, and the page count settles down.
