Does WhatsApp Notify When You Screenshot a Status?

The short version: No, WhatsApp does not notify anyone when you screenshot their status update, and it never has, on any version of the app, in any country. The only WhatsApp feature that triggers a screenshot alert is disappearing "View Once" photos and videos sent in a direct chat. Status updates, group photos, and ordinary chat messages can all be screenshotted silently.

I get asked this a lot by people who've just posted something a bit personal and want to know, after the fact, whether someone's quietly grabbed a copy. The honest answer is you'll probably never know. That's not a flaw hidden in the settings menu, it's how the feature has been built since statuses launched back in 2017 as WhatsApp's answer to Instagram Stories and Snapchat's disappearing posts.

What WhatsApp tells you, and what it doesn't

WhatsApp Status sits in its own tab, separate from chats, and shows you two things: who's viewed your status, and when. Open your own status, tap the eye icon or swipe up, and you get a list of names with timestamps. That's it. There's no screenshot icon, no "forwarded this" flag, no second list for "took a photo of this with another phone." The view list and the screenshot detection people assume exists are two completely different things, and WhatsApp only ever built the first one.

Compare that to Snapchat, which has run screenshot notifications on Stories and Snaps since the app launched in 2011, precisely because disappearing content was Snapchat's whole selling point. I've covered whether Snapchat notifies when you screenshot a chat in detail, and the contrast is useful: Snapchat built its reputation on content vanishing, so screenshot alerts were a trust mechanism from day one. WhatsApp Status was never pitched that way. It was pitched as "Instagram Stories, but inside the app you already use for messaging your mum," and Instagram doesn't notify for story screenshots either (it dropped that feature back in 2018 after testing it briefly). Status quietly inherited the same no-notification approach.

The one WhatsApp feature that does notify

Here's where people get confused, and it's a fair mix-up. WhatsApp does have a screenshot warning, but it only applies to "View Once" media, the disappearing photo and video feature introduced in 2021 and expanded to voice messages in 2023. If someone sends you a View Once photo in a one-to-one or group chat, and you take a screenshot before it disappears, WhatsApp shows a small message to the sender along the lines of "screenshot taken." That's a specific, narrow protection built for a specific feature. It does not extend to:

  • Status updates, whether photo, video, or text
  • Ordinary photos and videos sent in chat (not marked View Once)
  • Voice notes
  • Profile photos
  • Group chat messages

So if you've ever heard someone say "WhatsApp tells you when a screenshot's taken," they're usually thinking of View Once media and assuming it applies everywhere. It doesn't.

A worked example: say you run a small boutique

Say you run a small boutique and you post a status update showing a new delivery of stock before it's officially launched, maybe with a price you haven't finalised yet, shared only with close friends and a few loyal customers you've added to a private status list. One of those customers screenshots it and sends it straight to a group chat with twelve other people, several of whom aren't on your customer list at all.

You will never know this happened from within WhatsApp. Your status view list will show that customer viewed it once, at whatever time they opened it, and nothing else. No alert, no flag, no record of what they did with it afterwards. The only way you'd find out is if someone in that forwarded group chat happens to mention it to you, or if the pricing leaks back to you some other way. This is exactly why businesses using status for anything time-sensitive or unfinished, pricing tests, early product shots, internal updates dressed up as "exclusive previews", need to treat every status as fully public the moment it's posted. If you wouldn't want it screenshotted and shared with a stranger, don't put it on status at all.

The uncomfortable bit people skip over

Most articles on this topic stop at "no, it doesn't notify you" and leave it there, as if that's reassuring. It isn't, really, if you think about what status privacy settings are doing. The "My Contacts Except" and "Only Share With" lists control who can see your status in the first place. They do nothing once someone on that approved list has seen it. You're trusting every single person on your status viewer list with the same level of discretion you'd give your closest friend, whether that's warranted or not. A list of 200 contacts means 200 separate people who could screenshot, forward, repost to their own story, or send to a journalist, with zero technical barrier and zero record left behind for you to find.

This matters more for businesses than individuals, because a personal status about a holiday photo screenshotted and shared is embarrassing at worst. A business status with unreleased pricing, an internal memo photographed and posted by mistake, or a customer complaint response meant for one person, screenshotted and shared out of context, can do actual damage. If you're running a WhatsApp Business account and using status for updates, assume every viewer is a potential republisher before you post, not after.

How to check who's viewed your status (step by step)

If you want to see exactly who's looked at your status, here's the process on both iOS and Android, it's the same five steps:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Open WhatsApp and go to the Status tab
  • Tap on "My Status" at the top
  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or tap the small eye icon in the bottom left corner
  • You'll see a list of every contact who's viewed that specific status update, with the time they viewed it
  • If you've posted multiple status updates, tap through each one individually as the viewer list is per-post, not combined

Note that this list disappears along with the status itself after 24 hours, which is the standard lifespan for any WhatsApp status update. Once it expires, there's no way to retrieve who viewed it, screenshotted it, or anything else.

What you can do if privacy matters to you

Since there's no screenshot alert and never will be (WhatsApp has shown no sign of adding one to Status in the years since it launched), your real options are about controlling the audience, not the action:

  • Use "Only Share With" to build a small, trusted list rather than defaulting to "My Contacts"
  • Mute your status from specific people without blocking them, if you want fewer eyes on something without an awkward conversation
  • Avoid posting anything you wouldn't be comfortable seeing screenshotted and forwarded, because functionally, that's always a possibility
  • For business accounts, keep sensitive material (pricing, internal comms, unreleased stock) off status entirely and use a direct, one-to-one channel instead

If you're weighing up switching a personal number to a WhatsApp Business account, this is worth factoring in early, because business status updates carry different reputational risk than a personal one, and the privacy mechanics are identical either way.

Where this sits next to other apps

It's worth knowing this isn't universal behaviour across messaging platforms, because assumptions carry over badly. Snapchat notifies for screenshots on both Snaps and some Stories content. Instagram doesn't notify for story screenshots but does for disappearing photo/video messages in Direct, similar to WhatsApp's View Once logic. If you're trying to keep track of which platform does what, I've broken down every Snapchat story icon and symbol in a separate piece, since the icon system there causes just as much confusion as the screenshot question does on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot someone's status?

No. WhatsApp has never sent a notification, alert, or flag of any kind when someone screenshots a status update, on iOS or Android, regardless of the app version.

Does WhatsApp notify for screenshots of chat messages?

No, for ordinary chat messages WhatsApp does not notify on screenshots. The one exception is View Once photos, videos, and voice messages, where the sender gets a notification that a screenshot was taken.

Can you tell if someone saved or downloaded your status?

No. The status viewer list only shows who opened and viewed your status and when, not whether they screenshotted, saved, or forwarded it elsewhere.

Is there a way to stop people from screenshotting my status?

There's no technical block for this on WhatsApp. Your only real control is limiting who can see your status in the first place, using the "Only Share With" privacy setting rather than sharing with all contacts.
