5 Most Popular Ideas for an Online Business in 2023

The ecommerce world had a significant jump during the covid-19 pandemic where everyone had to shift to and rely on ordering online almost everything, from clothing, food to gadgets and furniture. It also forced many people to start working from home and others who got fired to think about new ways to make a living.

2026 Update: What Has Changed Since We First Published This Post

I wrote the original version of this post back in 2023 and, honestly, the landscape has shifted enough that I felt I owed you a proper revisit. If you are sitting here in 2026 weighing up your options for an online business, some of what I said then still holds up brilliantly. Other bits? A little dated. So let me give you the straight version of where things stand right now.

The biggest change I have seen is how saturated certain models have become. Dropshipping, for instance, is still viable, but the margin pressure is real and the customer expectations around delivery times have risen sharply. If I were starting from scratch today I would think very carefully before walking into that space without a genuinely differentiated product angle. The people doing well with it in 2026 are the ones who treated it as a brand-building exercise from day one, not just a quick arbitrage play.

AI tools have changed what is realistic for a solo operator or a very small team. I use tools like Claude and ChatGPT daily for content planning and first drafts, and there are specialist tools now that handle everything from social scheduling to customer service flows with far less manual input than was needed even two years ago. That means the barrier to starting a content-led business or a consulting practice online has dropped considerably. The flip side is that everyone else has the same tools, so your actual point of view and your expertise matter more than ever. Generic content is dead weight.

Coaching and digital products remain the models I recommend most confidently to my clients. The margins are strong, the startup costs are low, and if you have genuine knowledge to share, you can build something sustainable without a huge audience. What has changed is the expectation around community. People are not satisfied with a PDF download and a thank you page any more. They want access, conversation, and ongoing value. Building that layer into your offer is no longer optional.

One thing I want to say plainly: the "passive income while you sleep" messaging that was everywhere in 2023 has aged very badly. Most successful online business owners I know work hard and consistently. The income can be flexible and the lifestyle can be brilliant, but it is still a business. Go in with that mindset and you will be far better prepared than the version of me that started out years ago.

According to similarweb it is no surprise then that retail ecommerce sales are expected to reach $5.5 trillion in 2022 (compared with $4.9 trillion in 2021), and that by 2025 it is predicted ecommerce sales will value at $7.39 trillion globally.

Meaning, the ecommerce industry is growing at an accelerated pace and will continue so in the foreseen future at the expense of physical stores, making online presence a must for any retail seller.

Many people are becoming aware of the great advantages an online business can bring to their life like freedom to work from anywhere, working for themselves and not for a paycheck,  creating and selling products of their own, and more.

Nevertheless, as with any business there are many steps to success and there is no guarantee for it as well.

So the initial decision of what  you  will sell online is very important and one of the first things to consider and think about.

In this article will try to help with that by reviewing the 5 common online business ideas that currently prevail in the market:

1. Drop Shipping

Drop shipping is a business model in which the online seller does not keep the goods it sells in stock by itself but instead transfers customer orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer, wholesalers or other retailers, which do in turn keep the goods in stock.

Generally, the online seller in this business model is a type of sales agent that promotes and sells products of others (manufacturers, wholesalers etc.), but without losing the freedom to determine his profit margins and the business capacity at which he operates.

The online seller attempts to sell a product, and only if he succeeds in doing so he places the order and pays his supplier, who then ships the goods directly to the end customer according to the address provided by the online seller.

Drop shipping can be used for many purposes. It can be used to offer customers items that are difficult to find in stores (especially niche items) or items that are hot sellers at the time which everybody ‘must’ have, it can be used to obtain products from manufacturers at a cheaper price, and the list goes on.

For example, you can order printed t-shirts from companies like Printful or Printify that will do all the process for you, from providing art ideas, to actually producing the shirt to shipping it to your customer.

2. Sell Digital Products

Selling digital products online has boomed in recent years as more and more users are looking for online solutions for various needs.

Common digital products are online courses, audiobooks, video tutorials, and basically anything else that can be presented in a digital format and sold online.

For example, if you have a skill in photography, you can create “Beginner Guides” on different topics related to the subject such as how to shoot nature photos, how to operate a specific camera, or “Best tips for portrait photography”, and so forth.

The options are endless and can be a lot of fun to create as well. You can start a youtube channel on a broad topic you are familiar with and start gaining loyal subscribers you can later sell to online courses for example, as a series of video tutorials or an audiobook that you can sell on amazon.

Digital products have many advantages such as:

  • They do not need to be stored physically or provided in a physical facility like a classroom, thus saving lots of logistics expenses.
  • They are relatively easy to produce - most can be created by yourself on your PC using various software solutions that exist for this purpose, many being even free of charge.
  • Once created you can sell them multiple times easily.
  • People love to buy digital products as they are very easy to use at their time of convenience.

3. Sell Hand-Crafted Art

If you have the passion or talent for creating unique or custom handcrafted art that can be your starting point since such items won’t be found anywhere except for where you sell them at. And luckily, the digital arena is a great way and relatively easy one these days to offer and sell such items by yourself.

There is a huge market for people who are looking to decorate their homes or buy a special gift for a loved one or who are even looking at art as an investment vehicle.

One way to start this operation with no prior knowledge is on the most popular ecommerce platform for selling art items, which is Etsy.

According to this research there are 81.9 million active buyers on Etsy which is ranked as the 4th fastest growing eCommerce company in 2021, behind Apple, Chewy, and Amazon.

On Etsy you can sell handmade jewelry and accessories, furniture and home decor, clothing, wedding gifts, and special presents for man or women and even pet items.

Anything that is hand-crafted and unique can be sold there.

4. Start a Blog

If you have a passion for writing, starting a blog could be a great way to elevate it into passive income. The key here is to write on a topic that is close to your heart and that you care about.

This could be writing tips on how to raise dogs if you have one or a type of sport you like to practice and know about from your own experience. This way you will always have ideas for topics to write about.

The most common way to make money from your blog, once the blog site generates traffic, is by displaying ads or selling banners to companies who have an interest in your niche, and would therefore want to advertise themselves on your site to gain exposure and reachout with their services or products to your readers.

Another direction you can take with your writing skills is to offer content writing services as a freelancer on the topic(s) you have knowledge about and experience with.

This can be from writing articles for companies that need to publish materials for online exposure, to writing blogs or technical tutorials for online stores on their products or services.

If this opportunity is of interest then you can offer your services on sites such as fiverr.com or upwork.com, which are the two biggest freelance marketplaces in the world.

5. Become an Affiliate Marketer

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a method where in the form of an article, video or podcast, you review on your site a product or service, whether a physical or digital one, of a certain seller, and then place a link in your article or video description to the website of that seller.

For example, you can review a product on Amazon and then link your article to the seller's product page on Amazon, or review a software that your readers might be interested in and then place a link to the software seller website.

The monetization comes from receiving a commission from the referred seller, once your reader clicks the link on your site, and then buys the product on the referred seller website.

For example, almost every student is looking for a laptop at some point during college. The most common go-to place for a student looking for a laptop would be Google, which will come up with a list of trusted sites that cover and review laptops for students.

These sites will review laptops according to criteria like performance, screen size, pricing, battery capacity, and so forth, and then provide the review score for that product.

If you are impressed by that review and browse to the seller website and purchase the product, the reviewing site will obtain a commission from the seller. It is no surprise therefore, that the vast majority of review sites are affiliate marketing sites.

They rely on these commissions to fund their online activity and review operations.

Summary

So, here you have it. There are many more ideas you can explore to start selling online, but remember that there are many other steps in the way which you need to learn and explore thoroughly, before putting your time, effort, and most importantly your money, to work.
