5 Extended Car Warranty Myths Busted

If you know how, you will find several reliable extended car warranty companies in the market. Do not let a bad experience or something you have read online ruin it for you.

Here, we debunk some of the most common car warranty myths to help you find the right deal for you.

You Do Not Need an Extended Warranty

The idea of not needing an extended warranty stems from two ideas:

  1. You already have a manufacturer warranty
  2. You will never use this anyway

You do not get double coverage when you get an extended warranty while you have the manufacturer’s one. But that is not, or should not be, the point. You want to get an extended warranty on your new car because it is cheaper. The rate is higher if you wait for the current one to lapse before shopping for a new one.

The second one is a case-to-case basis. There are car models prone to breaking down. You should research that ahead of time to know if you will want a warranty to help you out with that.

How you drive can also be a point of consideration on whether you need an extended warranty.

The benefits of a good car warranty are something you will be glad to have when you need it. But it is a benefit you hope you do not end up using.

You Have to Buy a Warranty From Your Dealer

Contrary to what most people think, you are not required to purchase a warranty from the same dealer you bought your car from. And you shouldnโ€™t, as their prices are typically higher than other providers. You have to be careful with that.

The myth of having to buy a warranty from your dealer stems from common advice of convenience: that you do not have to do more shopping or additional research if you sign up for their extended warranty. Theyโ€™ll also be quick to emphasize that they are already familiar with your car in case you need something fixed.

You pay extra for the convenience. Is it worth it? That is for you to decide.

Warranty Coverage Costs Are More Than Repairs

The average mechanic labor charge is $100 per hour across the country. That is on top of the parts you may need to fix an issue with your car.

There is a rising cost of owning and maintaining a car. It only takes one major repair to maximize the benefits of your warranty.

You are paying for your peace of mind. If your car breaks down, you do not have to dip into your emergency funds to have it fixed.

Extended Warranty Means Not Worrying About Your Car

A common myth for drivers is that having an extended car warranty essentially makes them invincible out on the open road. They assume that whatever the car has to endure will be taken care of later. Because of that, they tend to become reckless in their driving and neglectful in maintenance.

That is not true. Maintenance of your car still falls on you. The responsibility does not transfer when you purchase a warranty. What that covers depends on the provider and the terms agreed upon.

You need to read and understand the coverage of your extended warranty. For example, some providers will cover accidents but not issues related to lack of proper maintenance.

Wear and Tear Is the Same as Mechanical Break Downs

Cars are complex machines. They have a lot of moving parts. Issues due to these are categorized into two: wear and tear and mechanical breakdowns.

Wear and tear happen due to regular use of the vehicle. For example, your tires can get worn after thousands of miles. Oil filters can get clogged. In other words, these are inevitable as you use the car.

Mechanical breakdowns are usually defects from the manufacturing side. If you have ever heard of a car model getting recalled, that is due to mechanical failures.

Understanding the differences is important to what extended warranty you will get. Some providers do not include wear and tear.

An extended warranty can help you get out of a tight situation when it comes to car trouble. To get the best deal, shop around for different providers. See what each has to offer and compare them. Take the time to research and ask around so you end up with the right warranty for your car.
