The 15-Minute AEO Audit: A Copyable Framework to See If AI Search Is Ignoring You

You can check whether AI search is ignoring your brand in about 15 minutes, with no paid tools. Ask the buying questions your customers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then note which brands get named and which pages get cited. The gap between what you answer and what AI credits to someone else tells you what to fix first.

Every marketer has now been told to “optimize for AI search.” Almost nobody has been told how to check whether it is working. So teams either panic or ignore it, and both are expensive.

This AEO audit is a framework you can run in about 15 minutes, on any brand, with no paid tools. It tells you exactly where you stand in AI answers and, more useful, which specific thing to fix first. Copy the steps, run them on your own site this afternoon, and you will know more than most agencies charging for “AI visibility.”

First, one reframe that makes the whole audit make sense.

The rule that changes how you read the results

In AI search, the page that gets cited in the answer and the page that gets the click are usually not the same page. Discovery content (guides, comparisons, listings) earns the citations. The homepage or product page earns the follow-up branded click later. This is confirmed across recent AI-referral datasets, and it sits on top of a click economy that was already shrinking: roughly 58.5% of US Google searches ended without any click in 2024. It matters here because it means you cannot judge AI visibility with a single number. You have to check two things separately: are you in the answer, and does the answer send anyone to you.

Keep that split in mind. The audit checks both.

Step 1: Pick your five real queries (2 minutes)

Do not audit vanity terms. Write down the five questions a real buyer types into ChatGPT or Google when they are looking for what you sell, before they know your name. For a bookkeeping firm that might be “how do I choose a bookkeeper for a small e-commerce business,” not “best bookkeeper.” Buyer-intent questions, phrased like a human talks to an assistant.

Step 2: Run the cited-or-not test (5 minutes)

Open ChatGPT, Google (look at the AI Overview), and Perplexity. Paste each of your five questions into each engine. For every answer, log three things in a simple grid:

  • Named? Does your brand appear in the answer at all? (yes / no)
  • Correct? If named, are the facts right, or is it confusing you with someone else?
  • Who else? Which competitors got named instead?

Five questions across three engines is fifteen data points. That grid is your citation ledger, and it is the single most honest picture of your AI visibility you can get for free.

Step 3: Run the consistency test (3 minutes)

AI engines name brands they recognize as one clear, consistent entity. Inconsistency makes you a blur they hedge on. So check:

  • Search your brand name plus your city or category. Is the picture Google shows clean and consistent, or a muddle of old names, wrong titles, and conflicting descriptions?
  • Open your Google Business Profile, your site’s About page, and your main social profile side by side. Do the name, one-line description, and core facts match exactly?

Every mismatch you find is a reason an AI engine trusts you a little less. This step alone surfaces most of the fixable problems.

Step 4: Read the pattern, not the panic (2 minutes)

Now interpret the grid. It will fall into one of three patterns, and each has a different fix:

  1. Not named anywhere. You are invisible in the discovery layer. The fix is content: you need pages that plainly answer those five buyer questions, because those are what the engines quote. Start with the two questions where a competitor got named and you did not.
  2. Named but wrong, or named inconsistently. You are recognized but the entity is fuzzy. The fix is consistency (Step 3) plus explicit structured data on your site declaring who you are. This is usually the fastest win.
  3. Named correctly but no traffic. You are cited but the citation is not converting to a visit. The fix is on your brand-entry pages (homepage, key product pages), not your guides. The guides are doing their job; the landing experience is not.

Notice that all three “problems” look identical if you only track one number. The grid is what tells them apart.

What to actually do this week

You do not need a platform or a budget to start. In priority order:

  1. Fix any brand-info inconsistencies you found in Step 3. Free, fast, high-impact.
  2. Take the two buyer questions where a competitor was named and you were not, and write or upgrade a page that genuinely answers each one. Write it the way you would explain it to a client, with specifics.
  3. Add or clean up the structured data on your key pages so engines can read your identity without guessing.
  4. Re-run the whole 15-minute audit in 30 days and compare grids. Movement, not perfection, is the goal.

Why this AEO audit beats waiting

Most brands are doing nothing about AI search because it feels vague and toolless. It is neither. It is a measurable channel with a fifteen-minute diagnostic, and the businesses that run the diagnostic and act on it are quietly getting named while their competitors wait for certainty that is not coming.

Run the grid. Read the pattern. Fix the first thing. Then do it again next month. That is the entire discipline, and it is more than enough to pull ahead.

The short version: A 15-minute AEO audit checks whether AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews can find, understand, and quote your content. If you’re not showing up, it usually comes down to unclear structure, missing direct answers, or a lack of citable facts and quotes. Fix those three things first and you’ll see results faster than chasing every new AEO tactic.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AEO audit?

An AEO audit, or Answer Engine Optimization audit, is a review of your content to see how well AI search tools can understand and cite it. Unlike a traditional SEO audit, it focuses on clarity, direct answers, and structured formatting rather than keywords and backlinks alone.

How do I know if AI search is ignoring my content?

Search for your brand name and core topics in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews. If your site never appears as a source or your competitors show up instead, that’s a clear signal your content needs better structure and clearer answers.

Can I really audit my site in 15 minutes?

Yes, a basic audit is quick if you follow a checklist: check for direct-answer paragraphs, scannable headers, and quotable facts on your top pages. It won’t catch everything, but it will show you the most obvious gaps holding you back.

What’s the fastest fix after an audit?

Add a short, direct answer near the top of each key page, formatted in plain language a machine can lift and quote. This single change often has more impact than any other AEO adjustment you can make.
