YouTube TV Playback Errors: The Fixes YouTube Help Lists, in Order

When YouTube TV throws a playback error, YouTube TV Help says to check your location settings first: your home area and your current playback area both have to be right. Only if that doesn't fix it should you move on to restarting your device and router, updating or reinstalling the app, and checking your internet speed.

That order is the useful bit. It's tempting to restart the router first, but as of October 2026 YouTube TV Help puts location at the very top of its streaming checklist, ahead of every restart.

There are two settings that rarely get a mention elsewhere. One is Broadcast Delay, which trades spoilers against interruptions. The other is the pair of display settings on Roku that Help ties to HDCP errors and choppy playback. Both are below.

Step 1: fix your home area and playback area

YouTube TV uses two locations. Your home area is the zip code where you live, and it doesn't change when you travel. Your current playback area is where you physically are right now, so it does change. Help says to open the YouTube TV app and check what's listed under Home Area and Current playback location. If either is wrong, correct it.

To refresh the playback area on a smart TV or streaming device, YouTube TV Help gives these steps:

  1. Open the YouTube TV app on your TV.
  2. Select your profile photo, then Location, then Current Playback Area.
  3. On your phone, go to tv.youtube.com/verify.
  4. Allow the website to access your phone's location so it can update your current playback area.

On a computer or phone, you can select your profile photo, then Location, then Update next to Home area. Help says you can't change your home area if you've already changed it twice in the last 12 months, or if you aren't in the new area at the time. There's more on this in my guide on how to change your location on YouTube TV.

Two location problems cause errors that look like something else. Help says that while you're on a VPN or proxy you won't be able to stream from YouTube TV, and the fix is to turn the VPN or proxy off. It also says to use YouTube TV in your home area at least once every 3 months so you keep the right local networks. And YouTube TV is only available in the United States, so nothing plays while you're travelling abroad.

Step 2: restart, update, reinstall

If location checks out, YouTube TV Help moves on to the basics, in this order:

  1. Hold down the power button to turn off your device, wait 30 seconds (YouTube TV Help's figure), then restart it.
  2. Unplug your router, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Install the latest system updates for your device.
  4. Update the YouTube TV app to the newest version.
  5. Uninstall the YouTube TV app, reinstall it and sign in again.
  6. Open another app on the same device. If it has the same problem, Help says it may be a manufacturer issue, so contact the maker of your TV, player or console.

That last check saves a lot of time. If every app on the TV is struggling, YouTube TV isn't the problem. For a screen that goes dark with sound still playing, see the YouTube TV black screen fixes.

Broadcast Delay: the setting that causes interruptions

Broadcast Delay is the gap between a camera capturing a live event and you seeing it on your TV. YouTube TV Help explains that the lower the delay, the less buffer the video player has, so you're more likely to get playback interruptions. It also says congestion and Wi-Fi interference can delay live streams even on a great network.

Broadcast Delay optionBest forTrade-off
DefaultKeeping playback interruptions to a minimumYou're a little further behind live
DecreaseAvoiding live spoilersLess buffer, so more chance of interruptions

To change it in the YouTube TV app on your TV, select the three dot more menu, then choose Decrease or Default. If your live sport keeps stalling and you picked Decrease, switch back to Default first.

Roku: HDCP errors and choppy video

YouTube TV Help names two Roku-specific fixes:

  • HDCP error: turn on the HDMI Ultra HD Color setting on your TV.
  • Choppy playback: turn off HDR in your Roku Display type settings by going to Settings, then Display type, and choosing 4K 30 Hz TV, 4K 60 Hz TV or 4K HDR 60 Hz.

For everything else on Roku, my YouTube TV not working on Roku guide goes device by device.

Internet speed YouTube TV needs

Help says YouTube TV needs at least 3 Mbps for a good viewing experience. Here's its full speed guide:

Download speed (YouTube TV Help)What you can expect
Under 3 MbpsMay load slowly or rebuffer
3 Mbps or moreStandard definition video
7 Mbps or moreOne HD stream; buffering possible if many devices are using the network
13 Mbps or moreReliable HD, even with other devices on the same network
25 Mbps or more4K quality on available programs, for 4K Plus subscribers

If you're close to a threshold, Help's quick fixes are to lower the video quality in the player (the overflow menu on mobile, Settings on a computer, then Quality), switch your mobile data or Wi-Fi off and on, and close and reopen the player.

Watching in a browser

On a computer, Help's checklist is: close and reopen your browser, update it to the latest version, check that YouTube TV has access to your location, and consider using Chrome. YouTube TV is supported on the latest version of Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Clearing your cache and cookies may also help with location issues.

A few quirks Help lists that look like errors but aren't:

  • On an external monitor plugged straight into a Mac or Linux computer, you may get lower quality (480p, per YouTube TV Help) because of how those platforms handle copyright protection.
  • If you see a message asking to verify your device's identity for enhanced playback of protected media, select Allow, or quality may drop.
  • Audio on some on-demand programs may be quieter than on live ones.
  • A black screen with sound in Safari or Chrome can come from external display devices; try disconnecting them.

When it's a restriction, not an error

Some programs won't play because of viewing restrictions, not a fault. YouTube TV Help says these are set by content partners such as sports leagues and networks, and they vary with your location, the programme and the device you're watching on. Affected programs are simply unavailable. If you think a restriction is wrong, Help suggests contacting support.

My advice

Work through it in Help's order and you'll usually find the cause quickly. My advice: check Home Area and Current playback location before you touch anything else, and refresh the playback area from your phone at tv.youtube.com/verify. Then turn off any VPN. If it's still failing, restart the device and router, set Broadcast Delay back to Default, and compare your speed against the table above. If other apps on the TV are struggling too, it isn't YouTube TV, so call the manufacturer. Samsung owners can also check the Samsung TV fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does YouTube TV say playback error?

YouTube TV Help doesn't explain individual error messages, but its streaming checklist starts with your location: make sure your home area and current playback area are correct. After that, restart your device and router, update or reinstall the app, and check your connection.

How do I fix my home area and playback area?

Open the YouTube TV app, select your profile photo and then Location. On a TV, choose Current Playback Area and go to tv.youtube.com/verify on your phone, allowing it to access your location.

What internet speed does YouTube TV need?

YouTube TV Help says at least 3 Mbps. It lists 7 Mbps for one HD stream, 13 Mbps for reliable HD with other devices on the network, and 25 Mbps for 4K on available programs with 4K Plus.

What is broadcast delay on YouTube TV?

It's the gap between a live event being filmed and it appearing on your TV. Default is best for fewer interruptions, while Decrease cuts spoilers but leaves less buffer, so playback is more likely to stall.

How do I fix an HDCP error on Roku?

YouTube TV Help says to turn on the HDMI Ultra HD Color setting on your TV. For choppy video, turn off HDR in Roku's Display type settings.

Why is YouTube TV low quality on my Mac monitor?

Help says externally connected monitors plugged directly into a Mac or Linux computer may show lower quality playback because of how those platforms handle copyright protection.

Can a VPN cause YouTube TV playback errors?

Yes. YouTube TV Help says you won't be able to stream while connected to a VPN or proxy, and to turn it off to clear related playback errors.
