YouTube Bedtime Reminder: How to Set It (and Take a Break)

To set a YouTube bedtime reminder, tap your profile picture, then Settings, General, and switch on Remind me when it's bedtime. Pick a start and end time and tap OK. You can let the reminder wait until your current video ends, and snooze it for 15 minutes when it appears.

One more video at midnight is how most of us lose an hour of sleep. YouTube has two built-in nudges to break the loop: a bedtime reminder that kicks in at a time you choose, and a take a break reminder that appears after you've been watching for a set stretch. Neither forces the app shut, but they're surprisingly effective at making you notice the time, especially when autoplay has quietly lined up video after video.

How to set a bedtime reminder on YouTube

  1. Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings, then General.
  3. Turn on Remind me when it's bedtime.
  4. Choose a start time and an end time for the reminder window.
  5. Tick Wait until I finish video to show reminder if you don't want to be cut off mid-video.
  6. Tap OK.

You can also get there by tapping your profile picture and then Time Watched, which shows how long you've spent on YouTube alongside the reminder settings.

What happens when the reminder goes off

A reminder appears over your video at the time you set, unless you chose to wait for the video to finish. You can dismiss it with the cross in the top-right corner, or tap Remind Me Again to get another nudge in 15 minutes. It doesn't lock the app, so it relies on you listening to it. That's the honest catch: it's a nudge, not a parental lock.

Bedtime reminder vs take a break reminder vs sleep timer

FeatureWhat it doesBest for
Bedtime reminderReminds you to stop at a set time of nightProtecting your bedtime
Take a break reminderPauses your video after a chosen length of watchingBreaking long sessions during the day
Sleep timerPauses the video automatically after a set timeFalling asleep to a video or podcast

If you fall asleep listening to YouTube, the sleep timer is the one you want, because it pauses the video for you. You'll find it in the player settings while a video is playing. And because autoplay is what keeps the next video rolling, it's worth learning how to stop YouTube autoplay too.

How to set a take a break reminder

  1. Tap your profile picture, then Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Turn on Remind me to take a break.
  4. Choose how often you want the reminder and tap OK.

When it appears, your video pauses until you dismiss the reminder or press play. You can tap Change break reminder right there to edit it.

Why the take a break reminder sometimes never shows

The timer resets more often than you'd think. YouTube says it starts again if you close the app, sign out, switch devices or pause a video for more than 30 minutes. It also doesn't run while you're watching downloaded videos offline or casting from your phone to a TV. So if you mostly cast to the TV in the evening, the take a break reminder won't help, and the bedtime reminder is the better choice.

Teen accounts get these on by default

For users aged 13 to 17, YouTube switches on both the bedtime reminder and the take a break reminder by default. Adults have both off until they turn them on. Teens can change the settings, so if you're a parent wanting firmer limits, you'll need supervision tools rather than relying on reminders alone. My guide to YouTube account restrictions explains how supervised and restricted accounts differ.

Can't find the bedtime reminder?

  • It's a mobile feature. You won't find it in the browser version of YouTube on a computer.
  • Update the app. Older versions may not show the option.
  • Look under Settings, then General, not under Notifications.
  • Check you're in the main YouTube app, not YouTube Music or YouTube Kids.

Use Time Watched to see the real picture

Before you pick a bedtime, it's worth looking at how much you watch. Tap your profile picture and then Time Watched. You'll see your viewing time alongside the reminder settings, which makes the numbers hard to ignore. I find people set far more realistic reminders once they've seen their own late-night totals. If the total surprises you, start with a bedtime window that's only a little earlier than your usual stopping point and move it back gradually. A reminder you keep dismissing is worse than none at all, because it trains you to tap it away without thinking.

Tips that make the reminder work

  • Set the start time 30 minutes before you want to be asleep, not at lights-out.
  • Use the wait-until-the-video-ends option. You're more likely to stop if you're not cut off mid-sentence.
  • Don't hit Remind Me Again more than once. Two snoozes is half an hour.
  • Pair it with your phone's own bedtime or focus mode for a stronger stop. Your phone can silence notifications and dim the screen, which makes stopping easier.

My verdict

Turn on the bedtime reminder under Settings and General, let it wait until your video finishes and treat the first reminder as final. It won't stop you watching, but it breaks the autopilot that keeps the next video rolling.
