X Business Account (2026): How the Free Professional Account Works

A business account on X (Twitter) is called a Professional Account, and as of Nov 2026 X's Help Center says converting your existing account is completely free. You choose Business or Creator during the switch, you get tools such as Professional Home, Profile Spotlights, X Shopping and Quick Promote, and you can switch back to a personal account at any time.

X describes a professional as anyone who uses the platform for commercial purposes: businesses, creators, publishers and developers alike. If X is part of how you earn a living, you count. The useful questions are whether your account qualifies, which tools you'll get on day one and which are still on their way.

Business or Creator: the choice you make once

During the switch X asks you to pick a category, such as the kind of business or work you do, and then choose Business or Creator. X's advice is simply to pick whichever is closest to how you identify as a professional on the platform. Your Professional Category then shows on your profile, so people can see at a glance what you do.

Don't agonise over it. If you pick the wrong one, you can change it later through Switch Account Type, the same menu you'd use to go back to personal.

Who qualifies, and who doesn't

X's Help Center and its Professional account policy set the same eligibility rules:

  • No history of repeatedly breaking the X User Agreement.
  • A complete profile with an account name, a bio and a profile picture.
  • A clear, authentic identity. Your profile can't use another person's, brand's or organisation's identity, or a fake identity meant to deceive.
  • Profiles of animals or fictional characters aren't eligible unless they're directly affiliated with your brand or organisation. A shop's mascot can qualify; a random cat account can't.
  • Parody and fan accounts aren't eligible at all.

What the pages don't list is a follower count, a post count or an account age. So a brand-new business account with a finished profile looks eligible on paper. You can only convert an account you already have, though. There's no way to sign up straight into a Professional Account.

Switching your account over

As of Nov 2026 the switch runs in the app like this:

  1. Go to your profile settings, or swipe open the sidebar from your Home timeline.
  2. In the sidebar, select the X for Professionals tab. In profile settings, select Switch to Professional.
  3. Select Get Started.
  4. Choose a category and select Next. Search for your category if it isn't in the first list.
  5. Choose Business or Creator and select Next.
  6. On the final menu, pick Customize your profile, Pick Topics to follow or Promote a post, or tap Skip for now.

Customize your profile is the one to pick first. It takes you to the settings where you switch on your Professional Category and set up the Professional Profile your account qualifies for. You can come back to the X for Professionals menu from the sidebar whenever you like.

What each Professional tool does, and the catch

ToolWhat it doesThe catch
Professional HomeA dashboard with account analytics over the past 28 days, guidance on spotlights, making connections, Quick Promote and monetisationThe first version is on desktop, and X says not all users have it yet while it's still testing
Professional CategoryShows the kind of professional you are on your profileYou pick it from a list during the switch
Location SpotlightYour business location on a small map, optional opening hours and a contact button for a call, text, Direct Message or emailThe FAQ says it's available globally, but the same page labels that FAQ US Only
Shop SpotlightA carousel of products at the top of your profile; people tap through and buy in an in-app browserOnly available to some qualifying accounts
Quick PromoteThe fastest way to promote a post through X AdsAds Policies apply, and access can be paused for breaches

One oddity is worth flagging. The Help Center says Professional Accounts currently offer four spotlights, then names three: Location, Shop and Link Spotlight. When I checked, the fourth wasn't named anywhere on the page. X also offers a Spotlight Configuration Page to help you test the spotlights and switch one on.

Professional Home is where you'll see your numbers. If you'd like more detail than its 28 days, my guide to free X analytics covers what else you can see. For paid campaigns beyond Quick Promote, go to X Ads Manager.

Editing or removing the Location Spotlight

If you have premises, this is the spotlight that earns its place. To change it, open your profile in the X app, tap Edit profile, then Edit professional profile or Switch to Professional, then Professional Spotlight and Edit. Tap any field to update it, then Save and check your profile. To take it down, go back to the same menu and toggle the spotlight off. You can turn it back on any time.

How you can lose the features

A Professional Account comes with a policy, and X spells out what happens if you break it. If you stop meeting the eligibility rules, X may pause your Professional Account, Professional Profile or Quick Promote. For conduct problems, depending on context, severity and history, X can limit how far your account is recommended to people who don't follow you, pause or permanently revoke your Professional Account, Professional Profile, Quick Promote or advertising, or pause your access to X altogether.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If X detects that your account may be compromised, it may turn off your Professional interfaces and pause any running ad campaigns until the account is restored. So keep the login for a business account locked down.

X also says it has no immediate plans to build Professional Account targeting, so advertisers can't aim campaigns at professionals as a group.

Going back to a personal account

You can switch back whenever you want. Go to your profile, select Edit Profile, then Edit Professional Profile, then Switch Account Type, and choose the account type you'd like. A Professional Account isn't a subscription, and if what you're after is a check mark or the paid tiers, those are separate decisions covered in my look at Premium for business accounts and getting verified on X for free.

Should your business switch?

I'd switch any account that sells something or represents a business, because it's free, it's reversible and the Location Spotlight alone is worth it for anyone with an address people visit. Skip it for a parody or fan account, which X won't allow, and don't expect Professional Home or Shop Spotlight to appear on day one. I'd finish the bio and profile picture first, then convert.

If you're setting up your company's social profiles and want them working together rather than as separate islands, that's the sort of set-up I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Is an X business account free?

Yes. X's Help Center says converting to a Professional Account is completely free.

What's the difference between Business and Creator on X?

It's how you identify as a professional. X asks you to pick whichever is closest during the switch, and you can change it later through Switch Account Type.

Who can't get an X Professional Account?

Parody and fan accounts aren't eligible, nor are accounts with a history of repeatedly breaking the User Agreement. Animal or fictional character profiles only qualify if they're directly affiliated with your brand.

Why can't I see Professional Home on X?

You need a Professional Account and to be logged into it. The first version is on desktop, and X says it hasn't rolled out to every user yet.

Can I switch my X Professional Account back to personal?

Yes, at any time. Go to Edit Profile, then Edit Professional Profile, then Switch Account Type, and choose the type you want.
