The Twitter algorithm, now the X algorithm, decides what appears in your For you timeline. X says For you mixes posts from accounts and Topics you follow with recommended posts it selects using signals such as how popular a post is and how people in your network interact with it. The Following tab skips recommendations and shows only accounts you follow.
There's a lot of guesswork online about how X ranks posts. This guide sticks to what X itself says in its help centre, and then turns that into practical steps for a business account.
For you versus Following
| Timeline | What it shows |
|---|---|
| For you | Posts from accounts and Topics you follow, plus recommended posts and accounts from outside your network |
| Following | Posts only from the accounts you follow |
Switch between them by clicking or swiping between the two tabs at the top of your Home timeline. X remembers your choice: when you close the app on one tab, you'll return to whichever you had open last. Both timelines can also include promoted posts and reposts.
How X picks posts from outside your network
X says that when it spots a post, an account to follow or other content that's popular or relevant, it may add it to your For you timeline. It selects each one using a variety of signals, including:
- How popular the post is.
- How people in your network are interacting with it.
- Whether it contributes to the conversation in a way that's relevant, credible and safe.
That second signal is the one to remember. A post reaches beyond its author's followers when people in other networks engage with it, because their followers then see it as relevant.
How replies are ranked
Replies under a post aren't always shown in time order. X says it ranks replies higher based on factors such as:
- Whether the original post's author has replied in that thread.
- Whether the reply is from someone you follow.
- Whether the person replying is an X Premium subscriber or on a paid plan of The X Subscription.
X's Premium page backs up the third point: the Premium tier includes larger reply prioritisation and Premium+ the largest. So if you reply to big accounts to get seen, a paid plan changes where your reply lands, and the author replying back lifts the whole thread.
Is X shadow banning you?
X's own myths page says plainly that it doesn't shadow ban, while confirming that it does rank posts to make timelines more relevant, and that you can always see posts from people you follow. What people experience as a shadow ban is usually ranking: a post shown lower in For you or in search rather than removed. X also says hidden replies aren't removed; they're moved out of the main conversation and can be viewed by tapping an icon on the post.
The other algorithms on X
| Feature | What X says decides it |
|---|---|
| Top search results | An algorithm, personalised to your X activity and the people you follow; X says it doesn't curate search results by hand |
| Trends | An algorithm that favours topics popular right now, tailored to who you follow, your interests and your location |
| Latest search results | The newest matching posts, an alternative to Top |
If you search a topic and only see a few posts, switch from Top to Latest at the top of the results.
What paying for X changes in your own feed
Your plan also changes what you see, not just how your replies rank. X's Premium page says Premium subscribers see roughly half as many ads in the For you and Following timelines, with about twice as many ordinary posts between promoted ones. Premium+ is described as ad-free across most of X, including For you, Following, replies and profiles, though X says occasional promoted content may still appear.
What this means for your posts
Turning X's own explanation into a plan for a business account:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Write for replies, then reply back. X says author replies are a ranking factor for the thread, so stay in the conversation once people start replying.
- Earn engagement from people outside your followers. Network interaction is a named signal for recommendations.
- Keep it relevant, credible and safe. Those are the words X uses for what it wants to recommend.
- Follow Topics that match your niche. X uses the Topics you follow to shape your own For you timeline too.
Then check what's working. My guide to finding your top-performing X posts shows where to look in your analytics.
How to make For you more useful
Follow the Topics you want to see more of, and mute words or accounts you're tired of seeing. X also lets you report posts from the menu at the top of a post. If you'd rather avoid recommendations altogether, stay on the Following tab; X will open it again next time.
The same principles run through other feeds. If you post short video, compare this with how the Instagram Reels algorithm decides what to show.
My verdict
X's algorithm isn't a secret formula so much as a set of signals it states openly: popularity, engagement from people's networks, replies from the author and, increasingly, whether you pay. For most businesses the winning habit is simple: post things people want to answer, answer them back, and judge results by engagement from outside your follower base. Paying for Premium helps your replies get seen, but it won't fix posts nobody wants to talk about.
Frequently asked questions
What is the X For you algorithm?
It's the system that fills your For you timeline with posts from accounts and Topics you follow plus recommended posts, selected using signals such as popularity and how people in your network interact with them.
How do I turn off the algorithm on X?
Switch to the Following tab, which shows only posts from accounts you follow. X returns you to whichever timeline you had open last.
Does X Premium boost your replies?
X says reply ranking considers whether the person replying is a Premium subscriber or on a paid X plan, and its Premium page lists larger reply prioritisation for Premium and the largest for Premium+.
Does X shadow ban accounts?
X's help centre says it doesn't shadow ban, but it does rank posts to make timelines more relevant, and you can always see posts from people you follow.
