A Wix subdomain is a prefix added in front of your root domain, like blog.example.com, that sends visitors to a separate Wix site or to something hosted elsewhere. How you set it up depends on how your main domain is connected to Wix, and a subdomain pointing at a Wix site needs that site upgraded to a Premium plan.
Two limits catch most people, and both are stated plainly in Wix's help centre as of October 2026. A subdomain can only open your site's home page, not a specific page such as your shop or contact page. And you can't connect a business email to a subdomain, because Wix doesn't let you add MX records to one. If either of those is the reason you wanted a subdomain, stop here and plan around it.
What a subdomain is good for
A subdomain still belongs to your main website, but search engines may treat it as a separate site. Wix lists three reasons people use them:
- Organisation: keep sections apart, such as one subdomain for a store and another for a blog.
- Branding: give a section its own identity while it stays linked to your main site, like separating a physical shop from an online one.
- Search results: each subdomain can appear separately from the main site in search results.
That last point cuts both ways. Wix notes, in its multilingual guidance, that search engines treat each subdomain as unique, so ranking built on your main site may not carry over to the subdomain. If you're thinking about subdomains mainly for SEO, my guide to Wix SEO is the better starting point.
The three ways to set up a Wix subdomain
| How your main domain connects to Wix | Where the subdomain goes | What you do, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Bought from Wix, or connected by name servers | An external site, resource or blog | Add the DNS records from that host in your Wix account |
| Bought from Wix, or connected by name servers | A Wix site | Upgrade the site and add the subdomain in your Wix account; DNS records are added for you |
| Connected by pointing, or not connected to Wix | A Wix site | Upgrade the site, add the subdomain in Wix, then add the CNAME records at your domain host |
If your main domain is connected by pointing and you want the subdomain to go to an external site, Wix's directions don't apply. Your domain host holds the DNS records, so you create the subdomain with them. If you haven't connected your root domain yet, here's how to connect a domain to Wix first.
Connecting a subdomain to a Wix site
You can turn any Wix site in your account into a subdomain of another site you own, whether that main site's on Wix or another platform. A separate Wix site for your blog at blog.example.com is the usual example.
- Upgrade the site you'll use as the subdomain to a Premium plan.
- Go to Domains in your Wix account and click Add an Existing Domain.
- Select Connect a domain you already own.
- Pick the site to use as the subdomain and click Continue.
- Enter the full subdomain address, such as blog.example.com, and click the arrow icon.
- Click I own this primary domain.
- If the main domain is a Wix domain or uses Wix name servers, there's nothing else to do. If it's connected by pointing or not connected to Wix, add both sets of CNAME records shown on screen at your domain host.
It can take up to 48 hours for the subdomain to be visible worldwide, and Wix emails you once the connection is live.
Pointing a subdomain at an external site
This is the route for a WordPress blog, a booking tool or any other platform you want under your own domain. One restriction first: the subdomain has to be created in the same Wix account as the main domain. If the main domain sits in a different Wix account, it won't work.
- Ask the external host which DNS records you need, usually A or CNAME records.
- Go to the Domains page in your Wix account and click the Domain Actions icon next to the main domain.
- Click Manage DNS Records.
- Click + Add Record in the A (Host) or CNAME (Aliases) section, then Got it.
- Type the subdomain name, such as blog, in Host Name, and paste the value from your host. If the host tells you to enter @, leave Host Name blank.
- Click Save, then Save Changes, and repeat for each record.
Again, allow up to 48 hours for it to propagate.
Language subdomains with Wix Multilingual
If you want something like fr.example.com, you don't build it by hand. Wix Multilingual creates language subdomains automatically when you set the URL structure to subdomains. Here's what Wix says about them:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- You need a domain connected to the multilingual site, either bought from Wix or connected through Wix's name servers. Wix can't create them for a domain connected by pointing.
- With more than one domain on the site, the subdomains attach to your primary domain.
- Each language subdomain gets its own sitemap and its own robots.txt.
- Old page addresses using a language parameter, like ?lang=fr, redirect to the subdomain.
- Don't edit the CNAME records Wix adds for them. To shut one off, delete the language in the multilingual dashboard.
When a language subdomain won't load
Wix's troubleshooting checklist is short. Your site must be published, because subdomains are only created on a published site. Secondary languages must be set to visible. The site must be upgraded, which you can check at the top of your dashboard. Your domain must be connected without errors, which the Domain Assistant checks. Then wait up to 48 hours after connecting the domain.
Is a Wix subdomain worth it?
I'd use one if you run a second site, such as a blog on WordPress or a separate Wix site for a different service, and want it under your main brand. I'd skip it if you were hoping to send a subdomain to one page of your site or set up email on it, because Wix can't do either yet.
Domains are the one-time setup part. What I help with is the repeat work that comes after a site's live. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
