Wix Portfolio is a Wix app that organises your work into projects, groups them into collections and shows them in customisable gallery layouts. You add it to your site through the Add Apps icon in your editor, then create projects and collections from Portfolio in your site's dashboard.
Before you start, know that the AI setup feature, which uploads all your images at once and sorts them into titled projects, can only be used once. Wix says that's true even if you delete the app and reinstall it, so every project after that first batch is made by hand. It's worth having your best images ready before you click.
The three pages Wix Portfolio adds
| Page | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Portfolio page | All your collections, like a homepage for your work. With only one visible collection, it shows all your projects instead. |
| Collection pages | Every project inside one collection |
| Project pages | Each project's information and media |
In the editor you pick a designer-made preset for each of the three pages, then adjust backgrounds, fonts, navigation buttons and the gallery's layout, behaviour and design. A project is a single piece of work, and a collection is a group of similar projects. Wix's own example is a freelance photographer with one collection for wedding shoots and another for corporate events.
Building your first projects
- Go to Portfolio in your site's dashboard and click + Add Project.
- Enter a title and click Next.
- Add a description and click Next. You can also click Generate AI Text for a first draft.
- Add the project type, date or location under Basic info, then click Next.
- Upload images from your computer or import them from the Media Manager.
- Click Done, then Manage Project to edit more details.
To group projects, click Manage Collections, then + New Collection. Give it a name and description, pick its projects, add a cover image and set the focal point, and edit the collection slug if you want a cleaner URL. Project slugs live under Edit SEO Settings, then Basics. As of October 2026, you can't add tags to projects or collections.
Adding images, video and links
Each project can take media from your computer, your other Wix sites, social networks, a pasted URL or an embedded YouTube or Vimeo video. Embedded videos must be set to Public or Unlisted, because private videos won't show. For every item you can set it as the cover, choose a focal point, and add a title, description, alt text and a link.
A few details Wix flags that are easy to miss:
- Projects created from an integration such as Instagram, DeviantArt or Dribbble can't take media from the Media Manager. You update them in the original app instead.
- High-resolution images load a low-resolution version first, and it isn't possible to switch that off.
- Videos can autoplay. Set Play Videos to Autoplay under Behaviors on the project page element.
- In the Wix Harmony Editor you can only add images, not videos, and video covers aren't available there yet.
If you were hoping to connect a new integration, check the date first. As of April 2024 you can no longer connect a portfolio to app integrations. Sites that set them up before then keep working, but if you never connected Google Photos before April 2024, that option has gone.
Writing alt text that earns its place
Wix gives three reasons to fill in alt text on portfolio images: it helps them appear in image search, search engines see sites with well-described images as more optimised, and visitors using screen readers can understand your work. A short, specific description of what's in each image does all three. Add a description to the project as well, since that helps with both SEO and accessibility.
Translating your portfolio
With Wix Multilingual you can translate project titles, collection titles, descriptions, optional text on project pages such as Work, Client Name and Location, and the Next and Previous button text.
- Go to the Translation Manager in your site's dashboard and pick the language.
- Open the Portfolio drop-down and choose Portfolio collections, Portfolio project items or Portfolio projects.
- Type your translations or click Auto-translate, then Done.
- Save and publish your site.
Your translations won't show in the editor, so check them in Preview or on the live site. Auto-translation doesn't run for languages you add later, or for new pages and elements, so you'll need to repeat it. Translate again each time you update the portfolio.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The portfolio app or a portfolio template?
Wix offers two routes. You can start from one of its portfolio templates and build pages by hand in the editor, adding an about page and a contact form, or you can add the Wix Portfolio app for projects and collections. The app's big practical win is that project and collection changes go live as soon as you save them from the dashboard, without republishing your site. You can also show chosen collections on any page with the featured collections gallery widget, though it isn't in the Harmony Editor yet.
My verdict on Wix Portfolio
I'd use the app if your work naturally splits into projects and you'll be adding new ones regularly, because dashboard edits that go live without republishing save a lot of fiddling. I'd plan the AI setup carefully, since you only get one go. Skip the app if you need tags to filter work, or if you build in Harmony and rely on video. For the editor side of things, here's my guide to the Wix Editor, and to help your projects get found, read up on Wix SEO.
Writing descriptions and alt text for every new project is the kind of repeat task a simple AI workflow can draft for you. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
